Years ago there was a widely held theory that antisocial or criminal behavior was a result of low self-esteem. Later research indicated that it was actually a result of excessive self-esteem.

Your first-hand observations of a prison population or at least a prison subculture seem to support the latter explanation.

Since I've not lived the life of a poor black urban youth - I can't begin to understand why they feel the way they do - about anything.

What they did, however is part of a terrible pattern - and it's one that jails, so far, haven't solved.

Some would say the solution is to build more prisons.

I don't believe that will solve anything in the long run.

I'd say I'd rather build better public schools and staff them with better teachers so that kids in the poorest parts of each city have an equal shot at a good education as the wealthy kids who live in affluent areas. Such an approach might just be worth trying. It works in other places.

I've always believed that the taxes I pay - are the price I pay for a civil society.

You can spend your money on youth - before they are in prison - or, you can spend a lot more of it later in their lives - by building more prisons to incarcerate ever larger numbers of them.

I prefer the former choice.

The problem is the welfare state, i.e., leftism in general. Leftists forced on America policies designed to create massive government dependance and the break up of the homes of the recipients of those programs (intensively pushed onto American blacks particularly). Then there's the minimum wage, which cuts off the bottom rung jobs for unqualified young people to get their first experience and opportunity to develop good work habits and character. Then there's the regulation of the work place whereby potential employers are deterred from hiring anyone, but most especially they're deterred from hiring minorities, because once they do they expose themselves to massive and potentially crippling (economically) legal risk in the form of the government suing them for discrimination should they ever have to fire a minority for poor performance.
