Saw a Remington 514 Youth model at Dick's Sporting Goods the other day. Been looking for a nice single-shot .22 for my son and step-son to eventually learn to shoot with.

The 514 appears to be a Marlin action, but the fit and finish was a lot nicer than the Marlin stainless youth guns I've seen.

Anyone have any experience with the new 514s? I had an old one as a kid, but it sucked -- it was a hand-me-down from my drunken real grandfather on my mom's side who had at one point gotten mad about something and smashed it into a tree, cracking the stock. It wasn't a bad gun I guess, but it was never quite right when I inherited it.

Burner: I have not seen that Model as yet in person and I would be interested in one as I have two grandkids coming of that age soon.
I still have my original 514.
I could not find reference to the Remington 514 in either the 2,011 Remington catalog nor on the current Remington on line site.
Any additional information on the Remington 514 would be greatly appreciated - how much was it, is it a sigle shot or repeater etc.
Maybe I could look up Dicks Sporting Goods and see if they have an online catalog or pictures of their arms that are for sale.

Twas me i would look at a CZ 452/453 and also pick up a (CZ) 'Scout' stock (for CZ's M513 or similar .22 rifle) and a couple 'Scout' mags (which actually serve as magazine "plugs" and turn a Scout or other M452-actioned rifle ..... into a singleshot! (Five and 10-shot magazines can used later when your youngsters can responsibly use a repeater). CZ offers replacement 'Scout' stocks as listed accessories in their catalog.

My point is that a youngster could learn to shoot a M452 (or similar adult-sized CC .22 rifle), but on a [youth] Scout stock! Does this sound complicated? It really isn't.

But imagine as an adult your boys having man-sized 22LR's they shot as boys learning to shoot, but now can take pride and joy in as walnut stocked CZ adult guns? Wish my dad had done the same for me!

Got my grandchildren the CZ youth 22. Fits them perfectly and is scary accurate.

My plan is that their children will use it when the time comes.

I have no doubt that it will last.

I'll take a look at those. I've always heard raves about the CZ, but I'm a bit partial to US-made stuff, having grown up on a JC Higgins, a Plainsman, and a lot of Marlin and Remington stuff.

Although, I wonder about the legality of what they pictured -- it says 15.25" barrel -- I thought rifles had to be 16" to be considered legal?? Misprint?

CZ has a backward acting safety compared to other American bolt actions. Not a great way to train, IMO.

Great rifles otherwise.
