Does anyone what kind of stock to look for using a MRC 1999 action. Should I look for a manufacturer that says Mauser 98 stock, Winchester Pre-64, Winchester classic, or Ruger? Thanks for any help.

I use a Model 70 HS Precision and Modified the floor plate to work on the 99

So will the MRC 1999 fit the same stocks as a Winchester M70 or do modifications have to be made?

The main change is in letting a notch for the bolt release--very simple.

Is it primarily to be a hunting stock and do you want lightweight, synthetic, wood, laminate? Plain or fancy? Are you going to set it up or have someone else do the work? If you're having it done, discuss it with the 'smith. He'll tell you what he likes or doesn't. You're usually better off using what the 'smith likes or finding another 'smith. If you're gonna do it yourself, I'd get a stock inletted specifically for the 1999. What about glass/pillar/steel bedding or incorporated bedding blocks? Do you want any of that and can you do a bedding job or willing to try it?

I have a 6.5x284 MRC 1999 in a Serengeti stock. Nice set up. I can recommend them.

It is going to be a hunting rifle and does not have to be especially lightweight. Probably a synthetic stock but a wood would work as well. I would like a bedding block with free floated barrel.

My ideal would be to make this a DIY, but I need to educated myself more first before I make a call. If it is too risky, I will have a smith do it.

Is assembling a rifle something the do-it-yourselfer can even think about doing?

If it's something you have never done before, a bedding block stock would probably be the best bet for a good fit. Not sure who makes one for a 1999. It's not hard to bolt a barreled action into in a new stock if the stock is inletted properly for the action. Floating the barrel and bedding adds a bit of complexity to the process, but if using a bedding block in the stock, most won't bed and the barrel should float by design. If you take material out, take a little at a time.

I took a Model 70 Bell and Carlson Win. Extreme Weather stock (w. Aluminum bedding block) and tweaked the inletting for a MRC 1999. Like Utah alluded to, the main thing is notching out space for the side bolt release and maybe a teeny bit around the tang area. But it is nothing a little patience, steady hand and a dremmel tool can't do.

McMillan will also ship you a drop in stock for your action. If you did want to save a bit of $ and are not too concerned about weight, the Bell and Carlson M70 Medalists w/ bedding block come in around 29oz and would be your huckleberry.
