Well my camera was lost/stolen last week when were in Ca. on vacation, and now I need a replacement(still pissed about that BTW). I figured I would see if anyone had suggestions for a good one, that isn't going to break the bank.

This the one I am looking at rigth now as it matches pretty well with the features my old one had.

I've had several nikon coolpix over the years and they've worked quite well.

Personally I'm finally going to upgrade to a Canon G12, a tad over double your budget, but it's a pro quaility point and shoot. So if you want to up your game without going to the bulk and expense of a DSLR, you might want to look at the canon.

For size, price, ease of use, and picture quality - I am finding the Panasonic Lumix series to be very hard to beat. We have had two in the family that perform well beyond what you would expect for the price and the size.

I also like the Fuji "bridge" cameras for value, versatility, and ease of use. I'e been using an older model for a couple years now with good-great results. I do prefer having a digital eyepiece for outdoor use.

One of the CoolPiks that looks like a 35mm SLR. They have improved since I got mine.

I was thinking about trying a bridge type camera this go-round, but the bulk makes them less handy for my needs.
While I don't necessarily need the power of an ultra-zoom, I like the ability.
I think something like the Fuji or the Lumix with 15-16x is a good compromise.

Strong camera. The only thing I don't like is it has a rechargeable battery but you can pick up a spare battery and charger for $12

I just bought a compact camera for travel. It does even more than my larger camera! Extremely happy with it so far. M criteria were "pocketable" with at least 10 megapixels, uses AA batteries, and under $175. This one meets or exceeds all those. MSRP is $249, most places list it for $175 and I found one on Amazon for $118.

Try amazon or ebay they have many cheap cameras.

Whatever you decide on, fist go check out the pawn shops on the poor side of town, or maybe even the richer sides of town.

Seems like one of the first things to get pawned and not reclaimed are digital cameras, you can get some really good deals.

I ain't bought a NEW one in years, seems like even with new ones always the buttons break/stop working eventually long before the camera should be "broken", even with good care.

No photo I have posted on this site was taken with a digital costing me more than $30 .

I just bought an Olympus XZ-1. It's very cool and takes SHARP photos using an F1.8-2.5 lens. So even in low light your ISO will be lower (less noise) than many comparable cameras. I'll post a few after I get back from my work trip. It is larger than the smaller P&S cameras but is still pocketable.

I'm still considering the Canon S100, though. That sucker is small, and has the same sensor as the G12.

I got a Nikon L24 for 79.99 at Wal-Mart, it's a 14MP. The main advantage to it is the exposure is quick and easy to use.

Don't buy a Sony. Don't buy a Sony. And if I were you, I wouldn't buy a Sony.

If you're looking for the best point and shoots, don't bother with anything but Canon. I have a tendency to buy whatever is on sale because I treat objects like women. They don't last long.
