How do you like yours?

Sounds a little gay but a Pumpkin Spice Latte from Starbucks is pretty good. I make it less gay by sharing with the girlfriend. laugh

Yeah you're right; that does sound gay.

I like a good dark roast, black. Starbuck's dark is awesome both flavor- & caffiene-wise.

I grind a mix of regular roast and columbian whole beans and make it over the stove. I used to use a french press. Actually, I still do but the filter broke. Now I just pour it over the grinds and stir it occasionally until ready in about 5 min. Then pour it through a finum filter. That allows me to grind it finer than for regular french press too (get more flavor that way). I like mine with milk, no sugar. If I'm out camping, I typically drink it black if humping it, with milk if truck camping from the ice chest. Oh, and I also like it cold too. So I keep some fresh made and in the fridge. If I want it hot, I just make it fresh then.

I also used to drink too much. But, on those days where I had to go without, I'd get a headache. Think that's caffeine withdrawal. So now I don't have more than three cups, and those aren't full since I typically mix it with milk. My cup of joe is one of my daily indulgences I thoroughly enjoy.

Best coffee I've ever had came from Costa Rica; never been able to find the brand again (a friend brought it from Costa Rica).

Folgers is pretty decent for cheap coffee. I like mine with a little sugar, and sometimes with the vanilla creamer.

I don't measure my manhood by how black and strong my coffee is. A bit childish IMO...it's just a drink for goodness sake.
Posted By: JPro Re: Coffee - 10/23/12
I make it strong, but use Community half-caff, both at home and the office. With only half the caffeine, I can drink twice as much! The first cup gets a dash of half-n-half, the rest of them are black.

Any of the Folgers DARK grinds. Drip coffee maker. Put enough grounds in the basket so when it's done you can pick up the pot and look through it and not see a halogen flashlight beam trying to shine through. Three packets of Splenda and a bit of real heavy whipping cream (12 oz "cup"). Might have 1 1/2 cups a day. Sometimes I'll live dangerously and skip the Splenda, but I gotta have the cream wink.

OK, I'll join in. Black with a little sugar (no artificial sweeteners). But I gladly drink it black, too. Takes two cups to get through the morning papers on the 'net and email.

To expand a bit, we have become lazy in our dotage, and the wife and I mostly use the Keurig and one of several varieties of K-Cups for a fresh cup whenever the mood hits. When we make a pot, it's with beans from Peet's kept frozen until we grind them.

Maxwell House at home and Folgers at work, plus a little from a gas station now and again.

Posted By: Charity Re: Coffee - 10/24/12
Not being a coffee addict or nothing... The best brand coffee I have found over the last 20 years of drinking it is by far.... Tim Hortons, 2 shots of hazelnut, 2 creams. 2nd in line as far as flavor is Millstone Foglifter. The nutty aftertones sets off the smooth flavor.

Honestly, I will drink any swill that has coffee in the name. Hot or cold. French press gives the best flavor, but the Keurig works well for that morning wake up. I don't actually form real words or coherent sentences until after the second cup of the morning. Luckily the coffee ladies are well trained and understand this.

When I worked ER, didn't matter how old, I would finish off the pot. In the field and downrange, I may or may not have chewed down the coffee packets out of the MREs... I prefer cream, but as long as it's coffee, I will usually drink it. The stronger the better.

Black as the night, thick as mud, strong as Samson.

French press; predominantly San Fran Bay from Costco. Quantity has a quality and all that....
Posted By: troutfly Re: Coffee - 10/24/12
Hot, strong and black, usually Folgers in the percolator.
In the summer I'll perc a pot, put it in the fridge then drink it over ice cubes. Nothing like a decent iced coffee on a hot day.

Winnie,

That is a cool picture of your beautiful ladyfriend.

If you want to get her attention, next time you take her to Starbucks, tell the barista that you want a "Hot, Tall Blonde, Extra Sweet".

Yes, it is among their offerings.

I like their Pike's Place brewed coffee.

Those fancy lattes are a lot stronger than you realize. They can burn a hole through a wallet real fast when you are trying to keep a gal happily caffeinated.
Posted By: Maarty Re: Coffee - 10/24/12
In a pinch, anything with caffeine.
I'll drink good coffee black with a bit of sugar or with a splash of milk and no sugar.
Cheap and nasty coffee needs a bit of both.

I rarely drink anything but coffee, definitely not tea of any kind, Coffee, coke, beer or water for me.
Posted By: Folically_Challenged Re: Coffee - 10/24/12
I just gave up the French Press & went back to drip, when I found out about Cafestol. Apparently, it raises LDL (bad) cholesterol. , and since my Dr. has started nagging about that, the French Press went back in the cabinet.

Just in case this is unknown to anyone...
DARK roast has less caffine.
Thats the reason esspresso is a nighttime, after dinner drink.
As the bean roasts the oil comes to the surface, the flavor increases but the caffine is "burned" off.
The lightest roasts are the highest caffine content. Like the starbucks breakfast blend. Its a very light bean.
Thats why the crap beans are all dark roasted. You cant light roast a [bleep] quality coffee bean and get a good cup of coffee any more than a [bleep] grape can be made to produce a good wine or a [bleep] tabacco will ever roll into a good cigar. When your at COSTCO ever notice that all those cheap bulk bags are DARK ROAST? DUH! Dark roasting hides the fact that the beans suck.
Secondly.
the correct amount of grinds is 2 TABLESPOONS per 8 OZ of water.
Thats a lot but heres the trick.
If you want your coffee to be weaker, you add hot water to the prepared coffee.
DO NOT RUN MORE THAN 8 OZ OF WATER THROUGH each 2 TABLESPOONS OF COFFEE.
The reason is that there is only so much flavor in the grind. once the stram or hot water has pulled out that flavor the only thing left is the bitterness from the grinds fiber. So when its bitter its not because it too strong, its because your wringing out all the bean has to give up and pulling the bitter fiber from the grind.
SO make your coffee w/ 2 tablespoons per cup then add hot water after you pour your cup to weaken it. You will have a much better tasting coffee.
MY set up is this
Starbucks Breakfast Blend whole bean.
KRUPPS grinder
cheap glass french press.
4 cups of water brought to 200 degrees and poured over 8 tablespoons of MED grind. Stir and rest 4 min. Pour into warmed cup and add heavy whipping ( NOT WHIPPED CREAM) cream to taste.

BS... It has much more to do with where the beans originated, what 'grade' they score, and what the climate was that year..

Here's some better info from a coffee bean supplier in CA that I've used for years:
_________________________________________________

Step 3: The Roast Process in a Nutshell
Understanding the different stages of the roast will help you control the flavor of your cup and appreciate how different roasts result in different cup flavors.

Yellowing: For the first few minutes the bean remains greenish, then turn lighter yellowish and emit a grassy smell.

Steam: The beans start to steam as their internal water content dissipates.

First Crack: The steam becomes fragrant. Soon you will hear the "first crack," an audible cracking sound as the real roasting starts to occur: sugars begin to caramelize, bound-up water escapes, the structure of the bean breaks down and oils migrate from their little pockets outward.

First Roasted Stage: After the first crack, the roast can be considered complete any time according to your taste. The cracking is an audible cue, and, along with sight and smell, tells you what stage the roast is at. This is what is call a City roast.

Caramelization: Caramelization continues, oils migrate, and the bean expands in size as the roast becomes dark. As the roast progresses, this is a City + roast. Most of our roast recommendations stop at this point. When you are the verge of second crack, that is a Full City roast.

Second Crack: At this point a "second crack" can be heard, often more volatile than the first. The roast character starts to eclipse the origin character of the beans at this point. A few pops into second crack is a Full City + roast; a roast all the way through second crack is a Vienna roast. Small pieces of the bean are sometimes blown away like shrapnel!

Darkening Roast: As the roast becomes very dark, the smoke is more pungent as sugars burn completely, and the bean structure breaks down more and more. This is a French roast.

Ack!! Too Late! Eventually, the sugars burn completely, and the roast will only result in thin-bodied cup of "charcoal water."

___________________________________________________

I stop the roast just after 'first crack'.. But it depends on the beans; some have better flavor AT first crack, some are better just AFTER first crack.. All in all, it all boils (PUN!!) down to the taste buds of the drinker... smile

She is a lovely young lady, and as far as calling you gay, that could mean that you're happy. laugh

Black, no fluff...

Extremely gay. .270 Winchester in a cup.

Drink it black.

Give me good coffee and good rifles, prepared properly by a skilled craftsman.

Bad (hard, chlorinated, etc..) water, makes lousy coffe just as fast as bad grind.

Black, hot warm or cold, and lots of it. I mean "is that all ya got?" quantities.

You have Tim Hortons coffee out there?! Timmy Ho's is a staple of coffee around home! They are a Buffalo/WNY place.
Posted By: HugAJackass Re: Coffee - 10/24/12
Huh! I have lived in WNY, I always thought Timmy Ho's was a Canadian place.

The Canadian's had one at Kandahar in Afghanistan. It was a touch of heaven out there. Donuts and coffee.....yum!
Posted By: mikeymjr23 Re: Coffee - 10/24/12
Hm...ya know, I guess you're right. It did originate in Canada, but I didn't konw that for some time after my first Timmy Ho's experience.

There was one down the hill from my high school in Jamestown and we'd go there all the time.

HAJ...which part of WNY did you live in?
Posted By: HugAJackass Re: Coffee - 10/24/12
Rochester area and south towards Bath/Corning/Elmira.

I lived in almost every region of the state while growing up. I was born in Watertown, but lived outside of there in Adams Center. Moved near Albany in Gloversville/Mayfield, then lived in Cooperstown for a year, moved to Delhi/Oneonta area, hung out in New Paltz, moved to Syracuse (Liverpool & Baldwinsville), went to Bible School in Avon/Lima....

I've been around!laugh

Not many small towns in the State that I'm not at least somewhat familiar with.

I haven't seen a Tim Horton's down here in the south. I sure do miss them! They really put Dunkin Donuts to shame!

My parents still live in Bath, but are moving next month to Red Hook.
Posted By: mikeymjr23 Re: Coffee - 10/24/12
Man...I've been all over that area!

There used to be a gun shop in Bath that I loved to stop at while traveling from Jamestown to the Adirondacks. We'd go across 86.

Let's see...right now I am living in Philly, but I am hoping to get home for Thanksgiving. PM me your addy if you would like, and I might just be able to send you some Timmy Ho's. I do believe they sell it in the stores.
Posted By: HugAJackass Re: Coffee - 10/24/12
My dad spends several hours a week at that shop. grin

I haven't been back to NY in about 5 years. I sure do miss this time of year there. Nothing better than getting up at 0:dark:30 in the morning, bundling up, sipping a hot mug of mud, and heading off into the NY wilderness.

I once got a speeding ticket in Jamestown! laugh I was coming back from Ft Campbell, KY through Ohio and into NY and sure enough as soon as I crossed the border, I was met with NY's finest....mad

If Tim Horton's sells ground coffee, you can certainly expect that PM!!! grin

Is that gunshop off of Morris St(?) in bath, parallel to Rte 17?
I bought a Mossberg stock there once.

My mom's family is north of Watertown near Theresa. Spent a lot of time there.
My wife is from west of Rochester in dairy country. I went to college SW of Rochester and still visit inlaws and the Brockport Tim Hortons up there on occasion.
For anyone from the Adams Center area- Bob's "cakes" and coffee... smile

Wta Keurig coffee maker for Christmas (not my idea) and it has worked out well. I can only drink one cup of regular coffee in the AM. There are coffees that will put a smile on anyone, especially old salts like Jorge. When the vender says "exrta bold" they ain't kidding! whistle

I'm such a nice guy that I just called the local shop in town and they DO sell ground coffee. Send the address my way, sir. It won't be for a few weeks that I get home, but I will be sure to do that.

I know Theresa. We have a family reunion in Govenour every year. My parents were born and raised in Oswegatchie. To this day, I'm trying to get my grandfather's 160 acre farm in Oswegatchie back in the family name.

I must be a glutton for punishment though as I detest the black flies and mosquito's up in St. Lawrence County. eek Real good fishing on Flatbottom Lake and the Black River, though.

I'm going through my rolladex of colleges in that area. Gennesseo?

I moved from Adams Center 30 years ago. I don't remember Bob's. Is that the old Colonial Inn establishment?

I believe that gun shop is one and the same, PS.

Man, you guys are taking me back to my youth! I really want to show my wife and sons that part of my past. To this day, the best sunrise I ever saw was sitting on the edge of one of the Finger Lakes...

I do appreciate that. Only rifle I have currently (need to rectify this) is a 30-06 that I use for whitetail.

Man...all this talk of Tim Horton's makes me realize that I need to get some for myself!

I don't drink caffeine anymore, but when I am home, I am going to HAVE to get me a bag of the decaf coffee! Just don't seem right to only buy one thing of coffee.

My pleasure!

Though it's impossible to have too many rifles, it's equally impossible to find any much more useful than a trusty 30-06. Does old reliable have a preference that it shoots particularly well?

Yep, it would be almost criminal not to get you some of that coffee!

My memories are mostly bawdy ones involving camping, drinking and catching panfish everywhere from Lakeside State Park, around to Selkirk Shores and up to Clayton on the River. I still visit my college friends up in Rochester. I visit Watertown less often since my parents escaped to live down here in VA.

Wow! You're the first person that I've come across that's familiar with Elim. Yep! That's my old school!

Bob's bakery. The donut shop! Oh YEAH! First donuts I ever had! All the rest have been down hill from there! Sad to see it closing down.

There used to be a bee keeper in town that had the bee's all up in his shop crawling over everything. He'd hold them and pet them and went a long ways to limiting my fear of the insects.

It sounds like you've had some good times back in the day.

Wife and I have a coffee maker with a built-in burr grinder, set the timer and listen to that grinder go off when you're just waking up... even the cheapest beans fresh-ground, are better than the best stuff pre-ground. Once coffee's ground you want to get the water to it...right now!
Posted By: cra1948 Re: Coffee - 10/24/12
By the way, we are also both in agreement: good coffee needs nothing but a cup.

My favorite travel coffee mug is from Sheetz (a gas station, MTO, convenience store in Western PA) that says "Sheetz Happens".

My favorite mug for home use is one the fiance picked me up when she lived in Denver. It's a large mug and it has pictures of the Rockies and an Elk on it.

I have a mug in my apartment that my Nana used to ALWAYS use when she was at our house. It doesn't get used any longer as it is old and I worry about breaking it. That lady could drink gallons of coffee, and it HAD to be out of the same mug. She'd even make me wash it if it were dirty when she got there. It was smaller and lighter, and she just loved that old thing.

Not in California. I first experienced Tim Hortons when Greenhornet (dad) and I were driving back from Alaska through Canada. I was pleasantly surprised to find one in Huber Heights, OH when I was stationed out there. Two 24 oz coffee's on the way to work and I'd be set for the day. Last time I flew home, Dad took me to the casino up at Gun Lake, Mi as they had a Tim Horton's inside.

Slowly they are creeping into Southwest Michigan, they just opened a store in Kalamazoo/Portage area. The bag I bought when I was home in June is starting to run low so it's time to take another trip to Michigan. Since I only have the one bag, I savor it for the weekends when I actually have time to enjoy it.
