Never thought that I would be saying the "DUKE"-Cincy bowl game was a good one.

But it is!!

Baylor up next!!

an over-rated California team being gutted by unranked Texas boys

Baylor 21-UCLA 0 in the second quarter.

Yup. Lot o' folks took UCLDA's in the pool. Good for me and bubba Bob. :-)

Too bad Duke lost. They had that game in the bag or so it appeared before the TO.

These guys need to lose the Cam TD Superman celebration. Getting old.

28-7 Baylor with four minutes in the half.

Way to go Nick Florence. Heck of a season and bowl game with some big shoes to fill.

Bears got it going on!

Go Skins and RG3!

WTH has happened to the Hokies? They are just plain old BAD.

Is it Beamer?

VT can't get out of their own way.
Posted By: 5sdad Re: NCAA CF Bowl Games!! - 12/29/12
Surely VT has someone on campus, maybe some geek in the computer lab or maybe a co-ed that could play quarterback for them.

Also, when I look at the bird on the helmet, I can't help but think of "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" and the horseman in search of a head and imagine that the turkey is in search of a pair of nuts.
Posted By: byc Re: NCAA CF Bowl Games!! - 12/29/12
No kidding. The entire team falls down on damm near every play. Tripping all over one another. It's comical.

And they wanna' fight and pretend to be shooting guns at the Knights running off the field at the half. Classsy.
Posted By: isaac Re: NCAA CF Bowl Games!! - 12/29/12
They quit after their 3rd game, gents.

As a aside,Syracuse has two offensive starters out tomorrow night in the bowl game against WVU. I guess they thought the coach should have been clearer when he said curfew at 11.
Posted By: byc Re: NCAA CF Bowl Games!! - 12/29/12
The entire team looks like it's all jacked up on some kind of pills. Hopping around like a bunch of messican jumping beans. They're a mess.

I took the 'eers! smile

neither Rutgers nor VT looks worth a crap....Rutgers is just less bad.

I think this is the only game tonight...was hoping for something better. Military channel or movie rerun looks like the choices.

Agreed. Neither offense is worth a hoot. But it finally turned into a game.

Thinking OT, which will get sloppy.

Freaking Hokies.

PS....I watch them all too just in case one turns into a Nevada - Arizona kind of game. Duke game was fun. I think my fav was the MT Grizzz- APP State game on a blinding winter night a couple of years ago. Not a bowl game though. Ice bowl maybe.

Friend, as long as you are entertained, that is all you are responsible for. Enjoy.
Virginia Tech - Rutgers is hands down the worst bowl game I've ever had to sit thru.

Awful, awful, awful....

That's about where I am. I love football in general, and college footbal especially, but when nearly half the teams in the NCAA "big" division get to go to a bowl game because they qualified with a grand total of 6 wins, I lose interest. This year is no different. It was more interesting and meant more when there were only 10, or so, bowl games rewarding teams for a good season. The sport is driven by money nowadays, and nothing more.

The only people making any money on the bowl games are ESPN and the bowl organizers. It "costs" everyone else, especially the participating teams. Here is an excerpt from a 2010 Sports illustrated expose of the bowl system . . .

SI LINK

Quote
Hancock, the congenial executive director of the BCS, takes exception to that characterization. "Every conference has bowl agreements, and the commissioners can only act after taking the temperature of their schools," he says. "And if the schools didn't want to be part of the bowl system, there wouldn't be a bowl system." Critics, Hancock contends, "are fixated on the [potential] money. We prefer to do what's best for the student-athletes. And we hear them saying they prefer the bowl system." He must not be listening to the thousands of student-athletes whose sports have been cut by cash-starved athletic departments, even as the lack of a playoff deprives universities of hundreds of millions of dollars every year and enrages fans.

Today's exercise is not to advocate for a playoff (although we do present a perfectly good one above). Rather, let us shine a light on the people blocking reformthe smiling, backslapping, money-making traditionalists heavily invested in the status quo.

Representing this cartel at Saturday's game in Salt Lake City, and rocking a migraine-inducing array of strident blazers, were 10 bowl representatives, who took up most of row 3 in the press box at Rice-Eccles Stadium. They were chipper, and why not? Working for bowls is a great gig, if you can get it. You're not exactly planning a moon shot. You're putting on one game a year. Yet the money is excellent, even for such inconsequential games as the Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl, whose executive director, Gary Cavalli, is unlikely to go hungry, having pocketed $377,475 in 2009. Cavalli, of course, is a bargain compared with Sugar Bowl CEO Paul Hoolahan, who made $607,500 in fiscal 2007. Coming in just behind Hoolahan is John Junker, who is president and CEO of the Fiesta and Insight.com bowls. Junker's salary is nearly $600,000; in addition, three times he's taken out zero-interest loans from the Fiesta Bowl, which he has since repaid.

Not to worry about the bowls, they can afford to pay those salaries and perks. The Sugar Bowl finished 2007 with $37 million in assets and turned an $11.6 million profit. What's more, the Sugar Bowl accepted $3 million from the Louisiana state governmentthis a year before it was announced that the state was running a $341 million shortfall in its budget.

Yes, the bowls are doing very well, thank you. Though the majority of bowl games enjoy tax-free, not-for-profit status with the IRS, it's a misleading designation. There is plenty of profit involved. Cash-rich bowl execs spend lavishly on travel, parties, political consultants and, of course, their own salaries. . . Of the 120 athletic departments that play I-A football, 106 lost money in 2009, according to an NCAA report. Budget shortfalls forced the University of California in September to cut five sports. Virginia hit up students for $11.9 million in fees for the 2008--09 school year to offset athletic department operating expenses. Cincinnati reached two consecutive BCS bowls and still found itself $24 million in debt. All over the country, schools are turning to student fees, academic funds and taxpayer support to balance the athletic department's books, which helps explain the uptick in so-called pay games . . . In college football the bowl games grab the biggest pork chopand then help themselves to a few more, often more than 50% of a game's revenue. (The 2007 Chick-fil-A Bowl generated $12.3 million in revenue but paid out just $5.9 million total to the participating schools, Auburn and Clemson.) They do it by thinking of every conceivable way to profit from their supposed partners.

Ask Iowa. Halftime entertainment at the Jan. 1, 2009, Outback Bowl was provided by the Hawkeye Marching Band. And how did the Tampa Bay Bowl Association, which runs the game, thank the band for that gratis performance? By charging the university $65 a head for each of the 346 band members. According to university records submitted to the NCAA, the school was forced to purchase face-value tickets totaling $22,490 for the band, even though the game wasn't sold out. . . Very few bowls do, in fact, sell out. Aware of this, their directors require a ticket commitment, which obligates the purchase of thousands of tickets at face value. Schools must then resell those tickets or risk losses that can run into seven figures. Before Internet ticket sites democratized the market, the deal made sense to the participating schools. Now, for all but the biggest games, fans can avoid paying full priceas they must when they go through the school's ticket office. Tickets to the 2009 Music City Bowl were available on StubHub for 19 cents.

The commitment guarantees only one thing: the fattening of the bowls' profit margins. For their appearance in the 2009 Orange Bowl, Virginia Tech and the ACC agreed to purchase 17,500 tickets at $125 per seat, but they could sell only 3,342, according to university documents. The result: a $1.77 million bath for the school, not the bowl.

Ohio State ate $1.01 million in unsold tickets at the 2009 Fiesta Bowl. Smaller bowls do similar damage to schools thrilled by a mere invitation. The euphoria of playing in the postseason quickly wore off for Western Michigan two years ago when the Broncos' athletic department was able to unload only 548 of the 11,000 tickets it was required to purchase by the good folks at the Texas Bowl. Western Michigan's loss of $462,535 (before adding in travel and lodging costs) probably hurt more than its subsequent 38--14 defeat at the hands of Rice.

Paying full price for unused seats in half-filled stadiums is just one of the ways bowls stick it to desperate universities, like unscrupulous undertakers who see that their clients are compromised and turn the screws. Preoccupied with perception, recruiting and job security, athletic department officials are in a poor bargaining position. They tend to agree to anything. Like paying $65 a head for the band. . . . Yes, you may be saying to yourself, but what about the big bowls, the major BCS games like the Fiesta, Rose, Sugar and Orange bowls? Surely the teams who play in those get lucrative bowl payouts? And, in fact, Ohio State earned $18.5 million for making it to the Rose Bowl in January 2010. That's a serious boost to any team's bottom line. . . . So it would have been, if the Buckeyes actually got to keep the money, which they did not. The $18.5 million went to the Big Ten, where it was added to a pool of bowl revenue that was then sliced into 12 sharesone for each team, one for the league office. That still left Ohio State with a tidy $2.2 million to spend, which the Buckeyes did. Ohio State's team travel costs were $352,727. Unsold tickets ran the school a cool $144,710. The bill to transport, feed and lodge the band and cheerleaders came to $366,814. Throw in entertainment, gifts and sundry other expenses, and the Buckeyes lost $79,597.

Syracuse seems to have WVa pretty well whipped....Eers got a quick TD and Syracuse came right back with their own.

33-14 Syracuse now near end of third, field turning to slushy mush and the snow coming down hard.

and now WVa called for a safety...intentional grounding in the end zone. 35-14
Posted By: byc Re: NCAA CF Bowl Games!! - 12/29/12
and 2 safeties to boot (pun intended). Not good.

2013 resolution is to always pick the exact opposite team that I would normally take in the pools.

Posted By: Otter Re: NCAA CF Bowl Games!! - 12/29/12
OO - Can't disagree with you at all. Sorry, I sure didn't mean to imply that it was the colleges or universities driving the money train or getting a big payoff because of post season games. Indeed, it is the bowl organizers and the TV market making the big share of the bucks taken in for the post-season games. The colleges and universities get some national publicity for their teams and "educational" prowess, but as Iowa found out, it ain't free.

When I was in college, back in the stone ages, a student ticket for the entire season of home football games was $16 - and Nebraska won 2 National Championships my first two years there. When our son enrolled there in 1995, freshmen couldn't even get season tickets at all. In the 21 years between my graduation and our son's enrollment they had expanded the stadium by 20-30,000 seats, too. Last I heard my brother talk about going to a game in Lincoln, the total cost (for 2) was in excess of $400 (tickets, parking, travel expenses, snacks at the stadium) and they didn't stay overnight. I have better things to spend my money on, especially since most of the games I want to see are on the tube, regardless of who is playing. No wonder I haven't been to a game since 1983 or thereabouts.

JMHO . . .

They are - given my druthers, I would like to see a real effort made to pair up teams that look to be evenly matched (even then, there is no guarantee that both teams will come to play), but a college football game is a college football game and I enjoy watching; I know I certainly will miss them when the bowl season is over.

OSU's OC, QB and HC suck dog balls. What a choke job.

That was the worst coached game I have seen so far this bowl season. OSU could have run for 400 yards in that game, instead their OC kept trying to put square pegs in round holes, trying to force a passing game that wasn't there. Riley should have pulled Vaz at half time, he clearly didn't have his head in the game.

My Grandson sent a text after the cuse and EERS game saying he left nothing in NYC that he would go back for. He said it would take a month to warm up. He will be here in a couple hours and spend a week before going back to Morgantown for school and off season conditioning. 'EERS will return a bunch of Freshmen and redshirt Freshmen. That was a great finish. Can't believe Gamecocks pulled that off. Clowney is a beast!

Congats on the Dawgs win.
Posted By: CrimsonTide Re: NCAA CF Bowl Games!! - 01/01/13
Clowney absolutely had the play of the game for SC in my opinion. They got raped on that first down, then he lines up the next play and makes it right. Tremendous hit on the Michigan ballcarrier causes a fumble which Clowney promptly scoops up and gives the ball back to his team.
Posted By: byc Re: NCAA CF Bowl Games!! - 01/01/13
Yup. Big time. He knocked his helmet 15 yards downfield.

Posted By: byc Re: NCAA CF Bowl Games!! - 01/02/13
Guy is a beast. We sandlappers erupted when that happened. And then the TD from the forced TO. Dad figured the ole ball coach went over to Clowney and simply said, "get me that ball son." Michigan doods lid went at least 15 yards downfield.

Zebra's really screwed up that first down call. But it fired up the team and favored the Gamecocks in the end. In fact, that whole officiating crew sucked all game long.

Clowney (who played hurt btw), was quoted in today's local paper stating he intended to use the bowl game as a jump start to his quest for the Heisman. He keeps up his play and he may just accomplish his goal.

Thanks for posting the clip. Will send it around the state to fans looking for it.

Congrats South Carolina and Clemson. GO SKINS!

I hope FSU get's up for this game and RUTs NI by 60 points. Absolutely ridiculous having a MAC team in the Orange bowl.

I don't have any problem with non AQ's getting in a BCS game, but they should at least have the nutsack to schedule more than one BCS conference opponent before they act like they should be there.

There is no reason in the world for having NIU in the frigging orange bowl. If you are Florida State, what have you done if you indeed win this game? Basically, you have everything to lose and nothing to gain by beating the sisters of the poor university.

Somebody ought to be ashamed.

Well not being an SEC homer (other than SC), you know my stance. Any team can do the other on any given day. Bridgewater is kicking some gator azzzz.

But if FL would spend less time trying to "strike the pose" and play football they might get something done. Sure hope this FL team shows up next season.

Football does not have to be (and shouldn't be) played like that by people like that. There was a time when I thought that Florida did a pretty good job (unlike Florida State) of playing the game without following the Miami model. It looks like those days are over.

My brother is a Florida fan, but Mrs. Tide is a UofL graduate. Normally but not always, I pull for the conference, but I went with the underdogs last night.

Florida did not come to play. I don't know how you could be playing in the sugar bowl and be half hearted, but they pulled it off.

I'm not taking anything away from Louisville and Coach Strong, they were well prepared, obviously had a solid game plan and they executed well.

It does appear to me that UF has been infected with hurricane behavior. It made it easier to pull for the other team.

Sugar bowl had the lowest attendance since 1939 when TCU played Carnagie Mellon. It was the lowest attendance of a BCS game ever.

One thing if they ever go to an expanded playoff it will kill off the "One team is playing like it's the biggest game of their programs career against a team that had two or more matchups that were better in the regular season" type of deals that kill off team and fan enthusiasm.

Doesn't have anything to do with payback, but wasn't impressed with LSU, Florida, Miss.St, and SC (even though they won at end). All 3 of the SEC schools are favored in the remaining games, but if I were a betting man, I would take all 3 dogs with the points.

I was glad to see them go to the SEC just because I felt it would bring up their level of play over the longer term. I will admit that they surprised me this year at how good they became, but I never did feel they would embarrass themselves like many predicted.

now I'm kind of bummed out that the Tigers, with their perpetually half assed QB situation, are going to get prison raped for at least a couple of years by a team in the western division. in addition to Alabama.

Last night was only the 2nd game I got to see JFF play in. The first in person was against LSU where he had 0TD's, 3INT's and 14 yards rushing.

"If" you can keep him in the pocket like LSU and Florida did a decent job of doing you have a chance. Having downfield coverage helps as well "if" you can keep him in the pocket.

I'm not ready to surrender yet even with LSU's non existent offense. Let's not forget A&M finished effectively 3rd in the SEC West this year that would have left them out of the SECCG even if Bama had lost to Auburn (lol) the last game.

I just hope the SEC gets the permanent opponent in the other division deal straightened out. It's really getting old now that some of the teams in the west managed to downgrade even further when they went to 1 team.

Couldn't agree more.

OM played them and he was killing them with his legs. OM finally made and adjustment not to try and pressure him too much but just sort of set up a corral. The downside was that the secondary can only cover for so long. The key is containment with "some" pressure.

OM led by 10 midway through the 4th only to surrender the lead. Still had the ball in the final minutes with the chance to win only to see the OM QB drill a A&M player between the numbers.

In other news, OM us up 14-0 on Pitt. Go Rebs.

5sdad, I don't know how much of a chance you've had to watch OM this year but I think you will like Hugh Freeze. He's not a traditional "run the ball, play stingy defense" SEC coach, but he know's how to get the most out of what he's got and is a great motivator.

You just don't mess with uniforms. I was looking thru some papers last week and saw an article about how when LSU hired Saban or Dinardo I can't remember - that Bill Snyder interviewed and he had a list of 50+ request or "demands" as a condtion of him taking the job. One of them was a complete uniform redesign. Could be why he didn't get the job lol.

He's young and he happens to be our best option at QB currently. I'd like to see him "grow" and quit doing stuff like that.

Fumbles, interceptions, missed blocks and tackles, missed assignments - while I don't like them, I can live with them. That kind of idiocy, I can't.

Rebs come back and strike quickly.....21-7

Wonder what will become of the pro teams uni's that the Chipster goes too?

If Cleveland, then they could definitely use a Ducks-like uplift.

Exactly, what is a Brown?

I've always been of the opinion that not all turnovers are equal. If a defender makes a play to get the INT or strips the ball, he earned it IMO. But if you throw it up for grabs or try to dribble it like a basketball, that is not cool.

I'm neither a Cleveland Browns fan nor a hater. The seal-brown unis are classic and should be left alone IMHO.

Pretty sure that Hugh will lose this one. I think it was a fumble as well but I don't see them changing the call.

OM leads 24-10 at the half.
Posted By: Nail Re: NCAA CF Bowl Games!! - 01/05/13
31-10 after the 3rd Q.

I used to be sick of Cam Newton but now I'm even more sick of the Cam Superman crap. Seems even linemen are doing it now.

Give it up men!

38-10 now.

Ole Miss is looking pretty darn good for a team that was barely bowl eligible and lost 5 SEC games.

SEC west is going to be a much different neighborhood with A&M playing superman at QB and Ole Miss improving. good thing Auburn fell off the table.

Amazing what a coach can do for (to) a program.

The talent level needs to come up a good bit for OM. If any of the rumors are true, Freeze is taking care of business on the recruiting front.

The Under Armour B/W game yesterday had a number of quality players at least considering Ole Miss.

38-17 final.

The Rebs were very impressive. or Black Bears, or whatever the PC police make them call themselves. an Ole Miss game just doesn't look right without all the waving battle flags....when I was at LSU and we played them it looked like you were playing against the Army of Northern Virginia.

Congrats to Hugh and the Rebels. I would have never imagined having a season like this just a few months ago. OM was dreadful and he was able to come in and change the attitude of the players and program as a whole making this team competitive again despite lacking top talent. Thanks Coach.

Oh, and...SEC grin

So I heard. I been around long enough though that I don't let that get me too excited. Shoot, not even signing day means what it used to. I'll hold out till Aug. and see who's in school and on the team, then I will be happy.

The biggest regret from losing the battle flag, was not being able to stir our drinks with the stick. wink
