Hey guys, i tried shooting a few cast bullets this week from Scott F here on the 'Fire. I am not sure why, but i am getting some leading. The bullets are a 235 grain truncated cone lubed with alox. I am not sure what he is sizing them to.

I tried them out of my .45 ACP with 5 grains of bullseye and a winchester LP primer. The book says it is supposed to put out a velocity of 815 FPS. Is my load too hot?

Scott says he has no issues with leading using the same pistol and bullet, only a different powder.

Whats going on?

I wiped off the base and the cone of the bullet to keep things clean, but i did the base before i loaded them and i wiped the cone clean after they were seated.

Where was the leading, near the muzzle or just ahead of chamber?

Measure the bullets, slug the bore.

Did you remove all the copper fouling before shooting the cast bullets?

Just in front of the chamber, the bullets measured .4515", and no i did not.

That velocity should not be too hot. I suspect the bullets may be undersized for your gun.

Make sure theres no copper from jacketed bullets.

Fit is king when shooting cast.

Missouri bullet company has a formula that will tell you the optimum bhn for pressure your load.

Maybe you are to hot or maybe you are to cold for the bullet you are loading.
