How much is steel going for these days ? Honestly, looking at an article of ladies leather apparel and steel boned it is $169, while the one that uses nylon boning is $89. I mean there is barely any steel there at all.

Depending on the purpose the more exotic the steel the more costly. The exotic alloy is determined by what the steel is supposed to hold up or hold in.
Check with an insurance agent, the liability insurance could be expensive. Imagine what sort of injury could be wrought by what ever is to be held up coming down suddenly. Or catastrophic release or failure to hold back what it designed to contain.

Peaches, I'm not to well versed in "Corsets" but would say that whalebone is going to be even harder to find, if that's the play.

If it's a corset, I'll volunteer alla' the fitting free, and chase down the appropriate "Raw Stock".

Maybe Titanium, or even Unobtanium would be preffered substitutes.

If it's stainless, I know for fact that stainless wire is way, way up. That's the reason that airbags cost ridiculous money to replace. Lots of high grade stainless wire.

The raw price of the steel in that product had little to do with the price. The steps taking it from there to the finished product is a different matter.

Price of steel is up but not that up, there's something else or just a "quality" or supply and demand deal going on with that.

It's up enough if you don't lock in your price when you buy a couple million pounds you'll go bankrupt. But not enough to nearly double something that probably has less than a few ounces in it even if it was an expensive allow like monel/incanel or stainless.

12 gauge Type 304 stainless costs the company I work for about $2.50 a pound now.
