So, the employees are telling customers who ask, what day the ammo truck is coming in. It happened to be today. There was a line out the door at 9 am. By 9:05, they were completely sold out. ???? On the counter is a sign saying that there is a limit of 3 boxes of ammo per customer. How the heck did it all go in 5 minutes. The manager told me that the small gun shops are sending carloads of people. Brothers, sisters, cousins... They buy, walk out the door and get back in line. To them, they are now "new customers" entitled to 3 more boxes. How many times can you get in a line in 5 minutes! The whole weeks supply of ammo gone in 5 minutes. He said it's been like that week after week for months. It's just unreal, and it's the gun dealers buying it so they can resell it. I don't like that so much since the everyday guy trying to buy .22 ammo for his kids to shoot has to pay double markup if he can find ammo anywhere. For what. Just because some idiot in Washington wants to posture and lobby for pointless legislation. Just stupid.
Why would you go to Dicks after they banned sales of ARs and canceled orders from customers?
I don't buy the small gun shop sending in hoardes of people story. I have no doubt people are buying all the ammo they can, I doubt it is Mom and Pop's gun store looking to resell it. That sounds like some bullschit one of the dopes who work at Dick's would come up with. Their employees are clueless about anything gun related.
I figure the truck brought about 3 boxes.
Yeh you really need to hoard ammo right??? It will probably be banned.... NOT WTF is wrong with people????
I just hope that the idiots hording the ammo/guns ect are the ones who are willing to fight and die if and when and illegitimate government comes to confiscate them?

Actually, it's the truth. I know of several small gun stores in New Mexico that would go to Walmart during the last ammo shortage. It was the only way they could get any ammo. The small dealers use disturbtors who will usually take care of their bigger customers first. The bigger customers are usually buying consortiums that can place very large orders. This leaves the small stores that can't afford to join, high and dry in times like these. Dicks, Cabelas, Walmart and other large chains, can buy directly from the manufacturer.
They (the hoaders)fiqure that ammo is the new Gold. They buy it

at the now price and run off to the gun shows ect and make bucks.

Just wait till they have to buy some again ,and pay three times

more than they sold it for.

I stocked up for years. and, put away reloading supplies too. It isn't manly of those of you who didn't think ahead to be seen crying in public.

Your gun nuts, so adapt - my local Coast to Coast store had 10 boxes of 7X57 - thats enough ammo to make it worth buying a 7 mauser.

If you are trying to find .223 at this stage of the crisis, your way behind the ooda curve.

Now is the time to stock up on Clorox for your water supply, toilet paper for your basic needs, and booze to trade to those hoarders for the ammo you need.
Dicks sucks Dicks.
Dicks management a bunch of bend over's. Wont set foot in the store ever again.
I would assume that significant portions of the supply were being "bought" by store insiders, who then plan to be the ones selling it later at an inflated price.

They probably have buyers already lined up....

FWIW, four years ago was the only time I got caught semi flat footed & that was only because I had three new rifles in different chamberings that I was trying to develop loads for. When I got down to about a thousand large rifle primers we were about ten months into the buying frenzy...since then, I've been buying either 22's or primers every payday up till the latest frenzy...I'm probably set for life even if I double my shooting habits.

From who? There's nothing available on line either.
+1 on the emplyees buying it up and selling it on the side. Can't really blame them, the work cheap during the good times.

They are here. In fact, in many cases I've seen where they don't even bother pulling off the price sticker from the other store, they just put their sticker over the top of it. Heck, I've been in the Academy and recognized the employees from one of the main local shops in there when the Academy truck rolls in and buying the ammo.
I wrote Dick's an email stating that I would NEVER step a foot in their store again based on their actions. I wish more would do the same. Dick's went one way when things go sticky, and Cabelas and Bass Pro went another. We should reward those who stood their ground, with us. I heard through the grapevine that Midway, though I havent seen proof yet, dropped a big sum of $ to the NRA shortly after Newtown.

Just like real life, you know who your friends really are when things get tough, not when things are easy.

It is the case, without a doubt. And it's nationwide.

We have a local store that has boxes and boxes of all different kinds of ammo but he is quit high on price. He has typically been 10% higher than all other locals prior to fenzy now he is selling PPU and S&B 9mm for $25-27 a box. When wal-mart gets it in it is $15 a box.

I know that some folks are hoarding ammo, but seriously, how much does one really need?

I believe the the current shortages are a result of panic hoarding. There is very little sentiment for ammo bans and I can not envision a scenario in which a person would need more than 300 rounds of centerfire rifle ammo and a similar amount of pistol ammo (I exclude rimfire ammo from this number as it is very useful for small game and foraging). Even under extreme conditions of attack, by the time one has expended 250+ rounds, the problem is either solved or the individual is over-run.

I occasionally watch "Doomsday Preppers" and beleive that the guys with 10,000 rounds of .223 ammo are an excellent example of unnecessary hoarding. These folks are preparing for a very-long term hold-out situation that I can not envision as being realistic.

Let's assume that the US is invaded by a foreign army (as some apparently believe). One or two people holed up in a home or remote shelter with 10,000 rounds of ammo will be over-run or blasted out of existence before expending 300 rounds (unless they have a full-auto firearm). And, defending yourself from the marauding masses will be difficult as well.

Looking at today's situation for CCW carry, we regularly go out with a loaded pistol and 2 loaded magazines. If three magazines of 45 ACP is not enough, you've got other problems.

Just my thoughts.

Once the hoarding purchases are over, the price will return to normal (supply and demand) and they will (unless they sell it soon) be left with some very expensive ammo.

You don't shoot much, eh? 300 rounds of .223 is the start of a decent range day. I think I went through about 500 rounds several weeks ago at Sig and that was only a short "cold weather" gear day.

I can't blame the dealers... They have a market demand issue to supply. That's their business.

I am not a dealer or anything like that but I did something similar yesterday. I saw some Glock 19 mags that I've not seen in a while come into a local shop and they were $5 less than I've seen elsewhere. They limited 2 per customer. I went in and out 3 times....

Exactly! Don't even start bringing up how much ammo one goes through when they begin doing IDPA or IPSC competitions! WHEW!!!shocked

djs, I don't think you will find many at the fire that agree with the above sentiments. My kids can shoot 300 rounds off in a hour on the weekend. We have prepared accordingly. That is why we have free will so people can do as they please and if it hurts no one, so be it. I am not a panic hoarder, just a well prepared sport shooter and hunter.
ammo is the new gold.
yep the 300 rd count seems awful low to me as well

I always figured if you didn't have twice that amount of ammo why even have the firearm?

to each his own. amount of ammo or supplies one needs to have stocked for peace of mind is a purely personal choice.

I've never felt like I wanted less though, (well unless I'm moving it)

and now I'm loathe to shoot much because I don't want to diminish the small amount of ammo I have for each.

only shoot up what I can find and buy at the store, and that ain't much and it's expensive.

in a perfect world for me I'd have a connex filled with ammo and another filled with personal supplies and one filled with trade goods, I'd get a spot on that Doomsday prepper show and my hair would look real pretty and chicks would dig me! yeah that's the ticket

If you belonged to the NRA, you'd know that and how much. Was in the Rifleman magazine , last month's edition. Ruger coffed up more coins also.
If people would spend some time writing their rep's ...we would not have this horading problem.
There is no such thing as too much ammo.

You can write all you want but it ain't gonna matter much by my reckonin. The polls already show who favors what. I'm not against writing.

Another huge part thats stupid, is not having stocked up for this. If you really needed some ammo etc... and didn't stock up 10 years or so ago when we had a similar crunch, I'd say that classifies you as stupid.

Having shot upwards of 20,000 rounds of 223 a year in shooting, I disagree with amounts of ammo.....

I'd hate to think what we'd have gone through if we were ever to get into IDPA or IPSC seriously.....

This week I was in 2 different Cabelas, 2 Gander Mountain stores and 3 large independant gunshops.
It looked like handguns have started showing up and powder and primers. Bullets were not plentiful. I did not look at ammo closely.
It seems to me maybe ammo is starting to hit shelves again
On a whim as I was nearby, I stopped at a "store" that sells guns & ammo, but it is really more of a clothing, excercise type place. They had lots of 9mm, 38, 357, 45, 223, plus other rifle ammo on the shelves.I bought a couple 9mm,38 & 357, but I am already pretty much "over max" on most other ammo. Told a couple buddies, but don't know if they checked it out or not.

Well I when to a gun store today, and well since I have just 6 rounds of Federal 150 gr Fusions 7mm RM, I wanted to buy a box or two, they didn't have any, could get 338 225 gr Fusions, Or I could buy the Federal Premium 140gr Barnes. But they had Blue Box Federal so I bought two boxes. They had plenty of it, 223 22LR 9mm 308 ball they were light on that stuff but what can I say. The rifles chambered for what I shoot, no problem. Prices are up a bit thou. What was a 19 dollar box of fusions is now 32 bucks if he had them.
