Here is a link to the ABC/Washington Post Poll. Scroll down and see how they word the background check question. See the detail view link and observe that the number was 76% strongly approve and 10% somewhat. They added the two and rounded it up to 90% - hence the oft quoted figure.
As the question is worded, we all would agree with background checks. However, that is not the present proposal.
