Another thread made me think of this. It is kind of laughable now, but we were the Fighting Jackrabbits. My mom also graduated from there and the school had her draw the mascot. Bet it instills fear in the opponents. Hahaha!!!
I always thought Taylor Tx had a pretty lame mascot. The fighting Ducks!!!
Colville, wa is currently the Indians. There is a push being made to ease up on the use of " Indian " names. They may well become, " Pre colonial native inhabitants of this land ".....wrap that around a football helmet.
I was a Yellow Jacket but up the road we had the Steers. Never could figure that one out.
I seen a minivan going down the interstate one day. It was for a soccer team called the Vipers. It was 6 year old girls league.
hahahahha, ohhhhhhhh...fierce!

Here are a few schools from da UP,
Watersmeet Nimrods
Kingsford Flivvers
Bessemer Speedboys
Ishpeming Hemmitites
and my alma Mater The Gwinn Modeltowners
I always thought these were so funny.
I always wanted to be a "Fightin' Trilobite"!
Are you from West? I bet it was a tough one. Lol!!!
My hometown Louise, tx was the hornets. Now A city between Austin and San Antonio, TX, called New braunfels has a official mascot the unicorn. They even have a unicorn painted on the water tower.

We were the Bullock Creek Lancers. Not too bad-

there's some beautiful country surrounding those towns.
My high school was the Trojans. At some point before I started there, they changed it to the Gladiators. I don't know who made that decision, but I always appreciated it.
Mine was the "Old Abes" (Eagle).
My college mascot was a very angry corn cob... lol.

Forney IIRC?
Close! Forney is the only other town in Texas that has that mascot that I am aware other than my home town of Bowie. We were the Bowie Jackrabbits.
Mine was the Imps, was the White Imps before intagation. My bowling team was the Nads.
i got you beat...
Fighting Cocks
i got you beat...
Fighting Cocks
They make a pretty decent bourbon.
I think the Orofino Maniacs win the best name contest.

http://www.gounicorns.com/ I am from New Braunfels and before anybody laughs at our mascots being a "Unicorn" just know that we were and still are some bad mother truckers

The Local High School mascot is is "The Redskins," a couple of years ago there was an effort by the local Sprouter Crowd to do the Politically Correct thing to change the name from "Red Skins." I suggested they change their name to "The Port Townsend Pussies!" There was quite a debate on what the new name or mascot should be, but cooler heads prevailed their still "The Redskins."
Freeport Pretzels (no chit)
Freeport, IL
Pretzel power!!!
The Washington, PA "Little Prexies" always have baffled me. Very odd school mascot...
Can't over look the Hutto (TX) Hippos.
If you saw the cheerleaders you might understand it better.
Christinsburg Blue Demons.
And we've held off all attempts to have it changed!
Freeport Pretzels (no chit)
Freeport, IL
Pretzel power!!!
20 miles up the road from Freeport, across the WI border, Monroe CheeseMakers.
Perhaps the most unique mascot I've ever seen is the one of Flower Mound, Texas' high school. They are the "Fighting Farmers". The visual is a caricature of a mean-looking, demented farmer with a pitchfork, chasing something. The Fighting Farmers of Flower Mound. Wow.
Grew up in one of the many small town in Southern Illinois. My favorite is still the Cobden Appleknockers!
Alice Coyotes
Me too! American Fork Cavemen.
I always thought Taylor Tx had a pretty lame mascot. The fighting Ducks!!!
Back in the days when Iowa not only had pheasants, but each town had its own high school, the town of Mallard had "Ducks" as their mascot.
Laurens, showing the quality of its English department, was the "Elks".
I was always disappointed that Newell didn't go for "Posts".
Me too! American Fork Cavemen.
Grants Pass, OR Caveman.
No crap, Monroe? We'd always go up there for the drive-in movies and cheese.
Well, its not a mascot... but a cute story Dad always told. Supposedly for the time, it was innocent enough for sure, circa 50s probably IIRC. And evidently a true one...
Local small town had a good pitcher. Val Jean Peters (SP?). They were going into play offs and he was injured.
So the tiny community paper had the headline. Cubs play with Peters out.
Thought it was worth a grin.
Jeff
I went to Robert E. Lee high school, so we were the
Generals. Band wore CSA uniforms, waved the battle flag, and the school song was, of course, Dixie.
Now it would be the Roberto Eduardo Lee fighting Mexicans, and their favorite general is probably Santa Ana.
The guys in Colorado will now these 2..
The Brush Beat Diggers-Brush Colo
The Rocky Ford Meloneers- No [bleep].. a water melon with arms and legs!
Mine was the Imps, was the White Imps before intagation. My bowling team was the Nads.
I can hear the cheers... Go-Nads! Go-Nads!
No doubt the WORST team name ever chosen for a girl's sports team..............

Generals. Band wore CSA uniforms, waved the battle flag, and the school song was, of course, Dixie.

That's a seriously cool deal.

Same goes for the Robert E Lee HS Rebels from Midland, TX. They went from 4 consecutive (big school) 5A Football State Championships to suffering with the IBM (itty bitty mescins) disease.
Sky View Bobcat here---Smithfield, Utah.
Too funny Longbob.
I was also a Jackrabbit,
THE Mighty Fighting Jacks. Green & Gold, just like a John Deere tractor.
QHS Jackrabbits
We were the Highlanders. The coolness and historical significance of which, were over the heads of both our opponents and most of our own student body.
Unionville MO, Putnam County Midgets.
In Boiling Springs PA it's the "Bubblers" (I happen to know someone up there)
We were the Shelby HS "Golden Lions"
No doubt the WORST team name ever chosen for a girl's sports team..............
Hillary Clinton's Alma Mater..
Frisco, TX used to be home to the Fightin' Coons. Sadly, Dallas encroached on it, the place grew and they had to change the name a few years ago.
DuBois (Pa.) Beavers. Where's those Fighting Cocks?
Different part of the state, but on Tuesday, there was an all girl team at a county wide competition, their team name was 'Angry Beavers'. I have no idea how they got that past their advisor but they did.
Dale
We were the "Lutheran Lights". Lame, Lame, Lame. The school is closed now.
No crap, Monroe? We'd always go up there for the drive-in movies and cheese.
The drive-in theater is still open, and they have "Cheese Days" every other year. It's definitely dairy country around there.
One of our rivals was named the Black knights. I can remember coming home from college and my buddy who worked for the local radio station invited me to co commentate a football game between us( the Trojans) and the black knights. Well throughout the night I was able to slide some one liners in such as
Those black knights are just usin the Trojans up and tossin em away
Those knights are really wearin the Trojans out tonight
Look there the Trojans have look to be as organized as apron dress on a motel floor
The Trojans really need to get some better penetration
Cape Hatteras Hurricanes.
The best Trojan is a used Trojan.
Me too! American Fork Cavemen.
Carlsbad Cavemen here
The year before I started HS - 3 different schools combined into one:
Premontre Cadets, St. Joseph's and Abbot Pennings Squires.
Formed Notre Dame de la Baie Academy. Tritons.
Hey - me too!!!! McDowell H.S., Erie, Pa. Well, Millcreek, actually...

I can see the headline in the paper after a game between those two teams:
"Cocks smothered by Trojans"
Hey - me too!!!! McDowell H.S., Erie, Pa. Well, Millcreek, actually...
Was just in Erie yesterday. Stayed at the Hilton garden inn.
My hometown had the Montana State Prison right on Main Street. We were the Fighting Wardens!
Me too! American Fork Cavemen.
Carlsbad Cavemen here
This where we got the name from. Pretty cool place and is maybe 15 minutes from home:

South Kitsap Wolves
Port Orchard, WA
Class of 1958
i was a smithie. a muscular blacksmith hammering on an anvil. one of the local businesses, a butcher, supported girl's softball one summer. beaver meats was not the name i would have picked for 14 year old girls team lol
The Liberators, always loved our mascot, guy with a sword on a horse.
The Liberators, always loved our mascot, guy with a sword on a horse.
Better than a guy with a marching baton on a unicorn
the unicorn don't turn me off, but the marching baton?
seems like that'd be for the Fairplay fairies
I can hear the alma mater. Hansens mmmmmboppppp
Remarkably similar picture.
But we were the Crusaders.
We were the Bullock Creek Lancers. Not too bad-
No doubt the WORST team name ever chosen for a girl's sports team..............
I believe that is a family name. We had a town whose boys' team was the Rams and the girls' team was the Ramettes. (It used to be a law in Iowa that whatever the boys' team was named, the girls' team had to be that name with "ettes" added to it.)
I was and will always be a Beaver!!!!!
I remember a football game where the opposing team had a sign
" Lets bust those beavers!" Now I know, and that is some funny stuff.
MM
I think the Orofino Maniacs win the best name contest.
That one goes way back and was chosen because Orofino was home to a state insane asylum. They wouldn't get away with it these days.
The best (or worst) one is a college - Scottsdale AZ community college with the Fighting Artichokes. Their mascot is Artie the Artichoke.
The mascot is a protest. When they built the college they had all the students in temporary classrooms. The admin envisioned being a sports power but the students wanted emphasis on academics. When they got a wad of money for classrooms, the admin instead built an elaborate gym. The students were less than thrilled. To placate them, the admin gave the them the power to choose their own mascot. The students chose the Fighting Artichokes as a protest.
So many schools with such offensive mascots...
With the ongoing march into the abyss of political correctness some suggestions might be in order.
Gay Gladiators
Terrible Twinkle Toes
Combating Queers
Terrific Transsexuals
Powerful Poofters
Dastardly Dykes
Genderless Giants
Ann Arbor could have the Explosive Achmeds
And somewhere in Colorado, 4:20 Puffers.
Freeport Pretzels (no chit)
Freeport, IL
Pretzel power!!!
Ya beat me to it! I live about 25 minutes from that school and always wondered how a pretzel could strike fear in an opponent on the football field....
Howard (South Dakota) Tigers.....we were some mean MF'ers...lol
Fisher Illinois home of the "Bunnies"
We were the Bullock Creek Lancers. Not too bad
You know what they say about those Creekers....
Midland High School Chemic here.
Still not sure exactly what a "Chemic" is, but being the hometown of Dow Chemical, one can guess.
One of our rivals was named the Black knights. I think the Orofino Maniacs win the best name contest.

The question arises as to why his testicals are in his throat, below his epiglottis. (Speaking of epiglottis, didn't the Giants have a running back named Epiglottis Anderson?)
Youngstown State University, home of the Fighting Penguins. Boy, if that doesn't instill the fear of God in an opponent, what does?

One of my favorites was the Belfry Bats in Belfry, Montana.
In Worland, WY the high school is the Warriors and the junior high was the Papooses until they changed it to Braves a few years ago.
