Anything goes. Just like to see other people's stuff; what it looks like where they are and whatnot.

These are all crappy random phone pics from the past week or two. I often see something that grabs my eye, and take a pic, for no reason other than I thought it was an interesting image. I know, many or most people will just see nothing. And that's plenty OK. wink

Hang some up, any who'd care to.

kamo_gari,

I haven't taken these, but I hope that it is OK if post a few pictures taken by others.

I don't like big cities, but I have to admit that Stockholm is not bad as cities go - and I thought that perhaps a few on the 'Fire might like to see what it is like.

Stockholm is built on 14 islands, so of course that makes for a lot of shoreline.

Swedes are pretty fanatical about water quality so not only is the water safe to swim in, but it even passes drinking water standards sometimes.

Here, you see people fishing for salmon during their lunch hours, but the catching is slow by North American standards.

A nice shot of some of the waterfront:
[Linked Image]

An aerial view:
[Linked Image]

The preceding scene as seen from water level:

Below is the ship the av Chapman. It is a sailing ship built in 1888 and is now a hostel. When my father and I visited Stockholm a few years ago, he was expecting us to stay in a fancy hotel, but I had booked the Captain's cabin for us - it was much more memorable! The ship still floats, so when large ships passed by, their wake rocked us gently in our beds. smile
[Linked Image]

Oh, I should add that women can swim or sunbathe topless, but I can't post such pictures on this website. wink

Best of the evening (er, afternoon) to you, Leighton.

When I lived in NC I was cleaning pine straw out of a gutter, when a clump buzzed at me....I unassed the AO and came back with a stick and a hose.....

Meanwhile, while I was gone they were apparently drawing straws to see who got the " Big Fella" prize...

As I approached the gutter to whack it with the stick and hose them when they came boiling out.....One...count it...ONE!!!! came screaming out, nailed me right on the nose and went back in before I could say WTF! cry

Last summer, I lifted the lid on the propane tank and there was a family that just moved in.

unassed the AO doesn't do what i did justice.

However, as my trailing leg was set to do its next stride, I was poleaxed with Red Wasp AI (ass improved) and fell into a quivering pile of conflagurated pain.

My wife pried me out of the fetal position and got me inside.

The wasps returned with just the one having scored, knowing full well that I would never venture their way again.

These pic threads here are one of my favorites for a lot of reasons, not the least being that they are usually hater free. I'm no pacifista, nor do I have any need to get along with everyone (vast understatement lol ) but I admit to enjoying being a small part of the kind of thread where folks of similar mind agree to just 'hang out' with other members and shoot the breeze and share stories, in visual format, if you will.

Thanks!

Travis;
Thanks for noticing, she is indeed a beauty and gentle to boot.

Unfortunately seeing as I can double for a lawn gnome - height wise - she's a bit difficult for me to saddle easily.

Well she's a bit tough to get off of on steep hillsides too Travis, but as I mentioned she's gentle and has a real pretty head considering all the Arabian blood in her.

It's good to see you posting again Ben and even better to read you are back in a place you prefer to be.

As far as Wall Drug goes, somewhere I've got something like a pennant - look 'em up you who are younger readers.... blush - that my folks bought for me the first time we were there in 1967.

We were there another time too, but for the life of me I can't recall if it was '71 or '73.

You may go ahead now and consider me semi-fossilized Ben. I know my girls already do.

No offense intended, but the second picture looks like one that got a guy busted a couple of years ago. I guess he asked the game warden that had checked him to take a picture. When the guy hoisted up his trophy, one of the "antlers" unscrewed a bit and twisted around. He had a set of sheds he put lag screws in. Shot a doe and screwed the antlers onto her.

Bobcape,no offense taken.

Back in the late 70's a cousin killed a spike,my Dad and Uncle found some bigger antlers and put them on the little deer. Every vehicle that drove by looked then screeched to a halt and stared at the deer. Then a game warden drove by and did the same thing, but,he drove off just shaking his head. laugh

ingwe;
I don't often say this for a number of good reasons, but regarding your mulie photo, I may - just may - know how you feel.

Against my better judgement I laid down and took a prone shot at this grand old buck. I say against my better judgement as he knew we were there and everything about his body said he was going to run....so my lung shot ended up not being one and I'm sure not proud of myself that I shot when I did.

Anyway ingwe, I hit this fellow and he headed down into the most impossibly steep canyon one can still walk down - two hours down - and then when we finally killed him it started to snow buckets on us.

We took the back legs up on the first trip back, went back down to civilization to get some teenage reinforcements to help pack and down we went again to get the rest of him before the coyotes did.

So the photo is before I'm about to cut him up with a flashlight in my teeth and walk two hours up a snow slick canyon in the dark.
[Linked Image]

Oh, including the 4 leg bones that we left in and boned the rest out, there was 144lb of meat we took off of him, so for an Okanagan buck he was a good size.

Anyway I keep his rack up on the wall to remind me that sometimes I don't always make good decisions in life.

All the best to you and yours this week ingwe.

Dwayne
Posted By: ingwe Re: Feel like a picture thread? - 08/11/13
Dwayne, odd you mention that...my buck was dressed by flashlight between my teeth!

When mini-maglites came out I grabbed one, and later their rubber coated clones.Dude tried to sell me one of those and I immediately put it in my mouth ( I dressed a lot of deer that way...) and it tasted AWFUL...I declined to buy it because of the taste and he looked at me like I was crazy. laugh

How about another good mule deer...this time Ingwewife, and we got to dress this one in the light...an honest 30 inches...

ingwe;
Please congratulate ingwewife on that buck! cool

I've been chasing mulies since '81 and have never killed one that wide.

My goodness do I hear you on the Mini-Maglites! laugh laugh

I've carried a little Pelican for years because it didn't taste as bad as the Mini-Maglites. That aluminum in my teeth was more than I could deal with.

When they invented headlamps I was first in line to buy one.

Here's my widest so far - a bit of a spaghetti rack and nowhere near even 24" inside - but as the girls were with me it made for a grand hunt.

I've got his hide tanned and rolled up to give to one or both the girls if they ever want to make something out of buckskin.

Again all the best to you and yours in the upcoming week ingwe.

These pics aren't random... they tell a narrative of the history of my relationship with my kids, at least in part. Haven't got any skiing pics uploaded to Photobucket yet, so only 3 seasons are represented here. But anyway, since the rancorous split with my ex-wife in April, I've relied heavily on my kids for moral support, and they have been super. The good times we've shared in the outdoors over the years has been a precious link for us.

Kids with their first "trouts", Edson Alberta, ca 1987.

Dwayne and Ingwe and others:

Swing by your local vendor of Chinese goods (Canadian Tire or Wal-Mart) and pick up some bicycle handlebar tape for the metal flashlights.

The tape not only keeps the aluminum taste out of your mouth, but it is better to bite on and you won't chip your teeth.

Best of all, it is insulating! I had the idea for my full-size 6 D-cell Maglite when I was in Manitoba and it was below -40F -40C. The aluminum Maglit was sucking the heat from my hands even with good gloves. A double layer of bicycle handle bar tape means you can hang onto the flashlite (even using gloves) for MUCH longer at these temperatures.

Bicycle handle bar tape is much better than electrical tape which will soon be a sticky mess. Bike tape won't do this.

And now, back to a great thread!

Here is a couple of pictures (not mine, sadly) of the Swedish mountains a few hours drive from me. Norway is on the other side...

I really should use my digital camera more. Most of my pics these days are taken with my phone due to the convenience of the auto upload function. I hate sitting down to upload pics from a card to Photobucket and I have some pretty decent stuff from the last year or 2 on there.

Thanks for launching this thread, Leighton and thanks to all who've shared a snapshot or 3 of their world.

Might have been Feb, it was last winter. Took the wife for a drive out in the forest to try to photograph some wildlife. We watched them for a while, they were hunting rabbits. Couldn't get in close enough for any decent shots.

Dang, that sucker ended up spun 180 degrees and stopped just before falling out on the off side? What are the chances of *that*? Wicked cool.

Y'all have better pictures than me but I'll contribute none the less.

Leighton (if I may),

Great thread and some absolutely wonderful pictures. Thanks to you all for sharing. Very humbling to look at them. Makes one realize how small you actually are when standing in the shadows of greatness. Here's a few to add in no particular order:

All important family - minus 2 DILs and 2 grandsons. Yup, 3 boys and 3 grandsons. Ladies don't have much of a fighting chance (oh, but they still rule).
[Linked Image]

American Samoa - not that I've been a lot of places, but some of the greatest people you will ever be around. Once they accept you, you're family. And they are some BIG family!
[Linked Image]

Some animals are more memorable than others. 600 yard elk. Thought I missed the first shot, but there were two nice 30 cal holes within about 6" of each other. Don't ask me to do that again! Note the weird left antler base.
[Linked Image]

From the seas to....nowhere USA. Scott's Bluff NE.
[Linked Image]

San Jaun, Puerto Rico. What a great place to work (and play)!
[Linked Image]

Denali, AK. A rare shot when there were no clouds!

Amazing architecture. The chapel at the US Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs.

Having a beer with my best friend. I dump his on the ground, and drink mine. Usually once a year.

Didn't know the wife was taking pictures, she obviously had her biggest lens on. She was quite a ways down the lane as she knows it's a pretty private thing for me. She showed me the picture later, it's certainly nothing I would have posed for, but I guess it aint so bad.

Thankful for the time we had, but there should have been so much more.

You know.
That photo says a lot about a man. And his dedication to a friend. GOOD things I mean.

My favourite time of year is not far off, so a few random fall scenic shots from near my home, and a couple to remind me of what's to come:

Awesome stuff. Thank you for sharing, and it's worth not a damned thing, but tell your old man there are those he's a complete stranger to, and always will be, that admire and respect his achievement. That's badass.

On a vaguely related note, I've watched the Boston Marathon a dozen and a half times, anyway, and of all the runners, I've cheered on the father/son Hoyt team from their first effort in '82. I've not only zero interest in the kind of challenge taking on a marathon presents, but freely admit I don't have what it takes. Your dad is a tough, and determined man. Respect.
