Wife and I went to play darts at a place along the river. About a 1/2 hour later the bartender said a women needed help. I ran down to the river, and as I was headed out I told the wife to call 911.

Sure enough, there was a woman swimming in the river near a red buoy, but she was having a hard time going against the current. I told her to go with the current at an angle and I got her to the shore. She was with another person, a guy of the age of 42, he was no where to be seen.

The rescue showed a few minutes later but as of 2 hours in the guy hadn't been found. He is gone.

The woman was obviously 'self medicated' and apparently the two decided to take a swim.

Spent the next 1/2 hour talking with the Sheriff's dept and Fire Rescue.

Godspeed.
Messes your day up, for sure, to see that.

But, nature weeding out the unfit can be harsh to witness.
Perhaps I'm cynical, but so long as it ain't me or a friend/family member, I'm numb to it.

Still, I heard that he was 'slow' so I'm a little ambivalent towards the broad.

You only did good ... She may have been lost also.

Damn.

My day wasn't so bad now.

Lucky for the woman, the bartender sent someone down there who was smarter than she was.

Good for you Scott, some people still care and will get involved. Like you!
Lucky for her a retired Coastie happened by. Hats off to you Mr. Steelhead. Too bad about her friend though.

Darn Steel, they could have both been in Heaven. wink

Just kidding. She was blessed that you were there for sure.

So much for avoiding bars.

Here's hoping she takes advantage of the second chance you gave her.

Oh really?

Scott;
It's been too long since I've sent greetings your way, so here they are along with kudos for doing the right thing.

I had to run to Vancouver and back today for work which is a five hour hop each way and I saw the aftermath of three separate MVA's.

While I don't know if there were fatalities, two of them looked bad.

Those MVA's like your incident show how slender a thread we hold onto life with some days, or at least that's what I take away from it Scott.

There but for the grace of God go I is about all I can say, you know?

Thanks again for helping out though Scott and again all the best to you folks.

Well done, SH.

Semper Paratus
Could have saved me a lot of trouble in the fire service if I had just listened to rockingbar.. "Fugg that Cap, it's just nature weeding out the weak.. And tell that to the mom for me, would ya?"

Can you post up a link from the local news about how you saved her, you getting her to shore and all?
All this time I figured you for a guy that wouldn't even get his shoes wet in a situation like that, and you got her in.
Good job Scott......you never really leave your old life behind do ya....... wink
Good job Scott. First for getting involved in a serious situation not directly related to your and second for knowing what to do and how to do it well.
Well they found his body this morning. He drowned a little after 3pm on Wednesday. Godspeed

That's a shame. Prayers for his family.

Kudos to you on saving the lady.
It's not like a swam to her, but thanks. I did give my wife my wallet in case it came to that.
You were willing to go in and save her, that says a lot about you. Kudos to you and the bartender for saving that womans life.

Damn smart!!

I did lifeguard training and a bit of life guarding when I was a kid. You learn real fast to never swim to rescue somebody unless there's no alternative. A lot of strong-swimmer lifeguards have been drowned by lousy swimmers.

Reach, throw, row, tow& go... In that order.
Yep, she was making it, especially after I told her to stop fighting the current. I know she wasn't coming in as fast as she would have liked but she was coming in nonetheless.

In the training I took to become certified I don't remember them telling us there was real danger in drowners climbing us if we knew what to do. It's scary to learn that may not be true.
Missed the part about no alternative did ya?
Posted By: eyeball Re: Well That Was Interesting - 07/25/14
Yea, let them drown, but it was in '67 and any updates or pointers would be appreciated.

If she was fighting the current then I wouldn't have had high expectations of the outcome without you there to tell her to go with the flow. Never know, but don't short yourself.

Looks like this issue came up in Wisconsin yesterday. Three boys, at least one of which was this woman's nephew, swam too far out into a lake and were struggling to keep their heads above water.

She swam out to help the boy and did manage to save the boy, but she drowned. One news snippet which I did not see repeated had a witness saying he kept pushing her under until finally she didn't come up.

I vividly remember being taught of that danger in Boy Scout lifesaving class. We were taught to approach from behind the victim and grab them in a way that they could not grab us - such as around the neck from behind. We were taught that if push came to shove we might have to knock the victim out to stop their struggling from drowning both of us.

For some reason, my life guard instructor thought it was the funniest thing he'd ever heard when we asked him, and he told us not to even think about trying it.

So while we got to practice on each other how to break choke holds and such, we never did practice punching each other in the head repeatedly while treading water.

WTF? Does it matter? Take Scott at his word. Scott does not strike me as an attention whore.
Can't say I've ever seen anyone prove him a liar either.

Dick is unable to understand the difference in helping people and not pizzing on him if he were on fire.
Maybe a plaque on the beach honoring your bravery, with an audio playing dont swim upstream. Im sure you could have saved the guy too if he could only have heard you yell.

Got her to shore. Without even getting your shoes wet.
Knew it.
You're being a douche again.
You mean always.
Toltec are you kidding? I was so inspired by scottie's act of bravery I went to Walmart and yelled at exiting patrons to "look both ways" as they walked across the parking lot. No telling how many I got to shore, err car, safely.

Rancho, anybody with 2 razor scooters (i.e. you) is not qualified to comment.
You are proving my point. All Scott said was that it was "interesting." You are projecting, pal. smile

I knew I should already have gone to bed.
Dude you have no appreciation. scottie almost got his shoes wet watching that near drowning girl. Why.. if scottie hadn't yelled for her to swim for the shore, no telling what would have happened, but scottie "got her to shore".
At least no one quoted Dick again so I can't read what he typed.

He's a typical little man that has never done a damn thing in his life. Funny really

We're capable of understanding soccer, it's just impossible for the average American to make it through a match without falling asleep smile

I concur on the cricket though. I was in a hotel bar in New Delhi India a few years ago and the bartender spent two hours trying to explain cricket to me. I didn't understand it any more after than I did before, but that might have been because of all the beer. Kingfisher isn't particularly good beer, but it was free during happy hour and that counts for a lot.

Yeah, my training included a lot of hold-breaking practice. One azzhole in my class was very big and strong and used to take delight in half-drowning his classmates in those practice sessions. When he tried it on me I grabbed his nut sack and halfway yanked it off. He went to the bottom like a stone.

Not that you would do that with a real victim, the key is to approach from behind and get a good grip, and if they try to climb you before you have a secure hold, dive under them and re-engage from behind again. IIRC. I haven't life guarded in 35 years.

CRICKET: As explained to a foreigner:

You have two sides, one out in the field and one in. Each man that's in the side that's in goes out, and when he's out he comes in and the next man goes in until he's out. When they are all out, the side that's out comes in and the side that's been in goes out and tries to get those coming in, out. Sometimes you get men still in and not out.
When a man goes out to go in, the men who are out try to get him out, and when he is out he goes in and the next man in goes out and goes in. There are two men called umpires who stay out all the time and they decide when the men who are in are out. When both sides have been in and all the men have been out, and both sides have been out twice after all the men have been in, including those who are not out, that is the end of the game.

The above is absolutely genuine and 100% correct! grin

I don't know why the bartender couldn't have just said that. It's all so perfectly clear now!
