Owen is now 11 and hunted doves for the first time with his new shotgun we got from John Barsness, a Weatherby 20ga SA-08 Upland. I like it so well I ordered one for me.

Owen got his NV limit of 10 birds by 10:00 a.m.

He went 10 for a box and a half, about the local average. He went 6 for 9 on the last birds and got the hang of the new shotgun and leading enough.

I scratched out my 10th bird as his 10th was falling to the ground. I was shooting a nice vintage Winchester Mdl 59 Winlite I purchased from John about 5 years ago. It's been an excellent chuckar and grouse gun with its light weight and neutral balance.

Snap! Me too grin 'Cept I got three.....

A phenomenal opening day NW of Austin, sounded like distant popcorn poppers from all points of the compass at first light.

My lightweight "youth model" (24" barrels, 13 1/2" LOP) Yildiz O/U shoots great. Me, not so much.

No worries, besides lots of doves, over the next four hours passed a steady stream of upland sandpipers, hummers, orioles, warblers, swallows and gnatcatchers all going south.

Fall migration is officially on cool

It's get'm while we can. They are bunched up into large flights right now. That means they'll feed up and head south in a day or so.

That's bad azz! What a cool picture!

Congrats to ya Owen!

BTW- I was knocking doves stiff today with that Fortunate SxS. It's become my favorite for any and all wing shooting.

I hope you gave Owen a hand cleaning the mud off his boots, otherwise you both might end up in the doghouse.
