Ted Cruz: A GOP Congress' top priorities

The Texas Republican took it upon himself to lay out the vision of what he thinks a Republican-led Congress should do in 2015 if they retake the Senate after the midterms, outlining a 10-point agenda in a USA Today op-ed published Sunday.

With plans to abolish the IRS and repeal Obamacare, Cruz acknowledged that Republicans would likely face vetoes from President Barack Obama and filibusters from Senate Democrats. But the potential 2016 presidential candidate appeared to look further than next month's election, saying obstruction from Democrats would drive Republican success in 2016.

"We should lead boldly. No Washington games," Cruz said. "We will either pass a serious agenda to address the real priorities of the American people ... or the Democrats will filibuster or veto these bills. And, if they do so, we will have transparency and accountability for the very next election."

Cruz's Op-ed marks a shift in the 2014 elections, which Republicans have sought to define as a referendum on Obama. Now, Republicans are being pressed to say what taking back the Senate would be -- rather than focusing on what it wouldn't be -- and Cruz is offering that vision.

The junior senator said the top priority of a Republican Congress in 2015 would be to stimulate the economy and create jobs with a focus on American energy. Republicans would authorize the controversial Keystone pipeline and cut down on environmental regulations that hamper fracking, have cracked down on coal and stymied the growth of natural gas, Cruz said.

And Republican talk about repealing Obamacare is anything but hot air. Cruz, who is a tea party favorite, said his party would "pursue all means possible to repeal Obamacare" -- repealing the act "and then pass bill after bill to mitigate the harms of Obamacare."

Cruz conceded that Obama could veto "every one" of those bills, but said "each has powerful appeal with the electorate who are hurting under this law."

Cruz also pointed to other facets of the right's agenda: from repealing the Common Core education standards "so that local curriculum is not mandated by Washington bureaucrats" to securing the border and stopping "illegal amnesty."

"We should welcome and celebrate legal immigrants who follow the rules, and at the same time honor the will of the people and prevent any more illegal amnesty," Cruz said.

On the financial side, Cruz said Congress should pass a balanced budget amendment to eliminate the current and prevent future deficits. He also called for Republicans to abolish the IRS and establish a flat tax, instead of the progressive tax rate that fluctuates based on wealth.

In addition to auditing the Federal Reserve and stopping a "culture of corruption," -- in part by preventing members of Congress from becoming lobbyists and establishing term limits -- Cruz tied the last of his ten priorities to foreign policy.

A Republican Congress, he said, would "deal seriously with the twin threats of ISIL and a nuclear Iran."

"We must rebuild our military, protect our nation, and restore America's leadership in the world," he said.

early voting today, fixing to head down there and vote,
warm....warmer...DISCO!!

I would vote for cruz. Just not convinced everyone else will.
All hot air... NONE of it will be done..
Problem is, Cruz is speaking FOR CRUZ, not for the Republican Party. Can't get anything done by himself.
I was the first voter this morning
I can't think about politics after going to Buc ee's for my first time.

KRAUTHAMMER
Memo to the GOP: Win the Senate, then enact an agenda and dare the president to veto it. Show the country what you stand for. Then take it to the nation in 2016.

I would.
Man I would love to see a flat rate tax. It would shut all these libs the hell up about everyone "paying their fair share" crap they keep pushing.

You would rather they do nothing?
I have a hard time believing any of it will get done any time soon if ever but I will keep voting in that direction.
If Cruz is on the ticket in 2016, he will get my vote. He's the only one with enough balls to come out and say what needs to be done.

I wish he lived in Alaska though. lol

Good job,,, if you leave work a little early you should be able to get to the poll's in time to vote again this afternoon.
I certainly hope the Republicans win the Senate, but its far from a slam dunk. I expect the Dems to pull out all stops & retain majority by a slim margin. On the comments about IRS tax revisions. I'm taking a course in Federal Tax Law at a local university & there was a discussion in one of the first classes about meaningful revision in the Tax Code. Consensus was that too many special interest are at risk for major changes. Real estate developers, loan companies, & banks want the house interest credit to remain. Farmers want to continue to receive subsidies, CPA's & tax preparers want to continue to make profits from interpreting the convoluted tax code. All these special interest groups contribute to politician's & want the tax code to remain unchanged for their own interest.

Lets see if I have it right.

Everybody bitch and moan because Congress/Candidates/Politicians don't have the balls to step up.

When they do step up...
Redneck's post mirrors my views exactly they all talk a good game but when it actually comes down to doing anything meaningful, they're missing in action. My feeling is, if they actually did what we need them to do we'd all be complaining to one degree or the other. It's going to have to hurt to turn this mess around.

Yep...not to mention that if THAT is the top priorities for the Republican party, it just reinforces why I'm an independent.

We need to stabilize our economy
We need to reform the tax code
We need to regulate investment banks so we don't have another collapse
We need to reign in US intelligence and get our right to privacy back (Start by repealing the Patriot Act)
We need to address the declining middle class (because our entire economy is based on middle class spend)

I don't think so. There's so much ridiculous spending, simple cuts could save billions on top of billions.

Tell me where Ted Cruz has been missing in action? In the Harry Reid Senate or in the 2014 election campaign to take the Senate away from Reid?

I agree we need more, but I will support every fighter we have.

Yes there's plenty of pork in the budget, but that pork does support jobs, and jobs allow spending down the road. There'll be a ripple effect no matter where the cuts are made. Just because it's going to hurt, doesn't mean they shouldn't do it. And just because it's a good hurt, doesn't mean we can't or won't complain about it.
Start with all the DOD items that they say they don't need and don't want and listen to all the pigs squeal. Try to close a base or kill a sub building project.
According to Carson, they might not even be elections

Obama wants to cut everything BUT the PORK.
Carson lays out a scenario that, while it seems unlikely, it is possible. My father and his hunting partner were talking about the imminent collapse of the government way back in 1969. They just couldn't see how we could keep going as we were. Yet, here we are 40+ years later still bumping along. Ther've been ups and downs, and some adaptations have happened to keep things going. It seems likely, to me, that that is the course we'll continue to take. However, the Chinese have a say in what becomes of our country from now on. We owe them too much money. If they call the debt, and we can't pay it, economic collapse appears to be the result. Should that happen, I see chaos on an unprecedented scale in this country and huge numbers of people BEGGING for the government to step in and make it all good again. The remnants of the constitution will go fluttering on the wind.

All those guys standing around on a street corner proclaiming the end is coming aren't wrong, so long as they don't give a specific date.

a huge chunk of the pork goes straight into obama supporters pockets. Solyndra for example. $500 million dollars that just disappear.

It's easy to dismiss individual programs that benefit non-citizens until they're put together and this picture emerges. Someone did a lot of research to put together all of this data. Often these programs are buried within other programs making them difficult to find.

Sheila Jackson Lee (D-TX) is pretty much on top of this Cruz thing with you guys.

Criticized Cruz for his call for greater leadership from the President, saying her good friend from Texas just needs to read a little more.

Now, the president, let me say to my good friend, the senator from Texas, just needs to read a little more, she said. The president was front and center issuing immediate help and support to the infected areas in Liberia and Senegal, Sierra Leone and Guinea and at one time Nigeria, or course Senegal and Nigeria are Ebola-free. But he was on top of it from the perspective of stopping it at its source, because he desires to have our citizens protected, he was not happy, and none of were happy.
Ltppowell: Tragically Senator Cruz has been "demonized" by the demonrats and the demonrat sycophant (flatterer and parasite) liberal press!
I would vote for him.
My top two priorities for the 2,015 Congress would be to impeach hussein obama and impeach earache holder!
Hold into the wind
Varmintguy
Senator Cruz is being "demonized" by the same Conservatives that bitch about nobody standing up to the Obama Agenda.

His long DO list is a blueprint for the new Republican Senate. Screw the Obama veto.
Every veto of what the people voted for in 2014 will backfire on the Democrats in 2016.

You and Bow are correct. Cruz is only popular with real conservatives, and there aren't many of them in Office, R or D. Hell, it's pretty obvious that there aren't many here at the 'Fire either, though they like to claim it.

So sad and so very true.

Hope Cruz can gain more traction, but the rovites will fight him with the heat of a thousand suns. It will be a bloodbath.
