Thought some of you might like to see these pix from our shoot here in Yuma last Friday. We shoot a modified silhouette match every Friday morning, we get about 35 people or so out to shoot. We don't go by the NRA rules regarding equipment, just shoot what you bring, shooting on the 1/2 scale lever action silhouette targets. Here's a few shots showing the range and some of the varied types of equipment that show up, note that we shoveled off all the snow first. wink

Is that full sized targets at 1/2 distance or 1/2 sized targets at 1/2 distance ?

That's 1/2 scale targets at 40, 50, 77 and 100 meters.

So your not shooting these with 7-08 / .260 class rifles . black powder type / pistol. 1/2 size chicken at 40 M would really fly laugh sounds like what we do for pistol cartrige lever gun. of coase the 1/5 scale at thoses distances is the "offical" for rimfire

The course of fire IS lever action silhouette for both pistol caliber and .22. It IS the official size targets for both Pistol Caliber and .22 Lever Action Silhouette, you are thinking about Smallbore Silhouette. Instead of limiting the shooters to just lever actions, we let them shoot what they bring, gets more people involved that way.

Follow you now . Many matches I go to have matches pretty much the same way on sperate range for those that don't shoot the registered smallbore matches.
Posted By: jnyork Re: A day on the range - 02/26/15
Yeah, we are lucky to be able to spread out all of our targets on the same range, we do have the 1/5 scale and will put them up also if someone wants to shoot them. For these shoots that are more like organized plinking, we get 30-40 shooters out once a week. We have the regular NRA Approved matches once a month, only about 7 or 8 come out for those.

Looks like a good time. I do miss shooting NRA High Power Rifle silhouette, the club I shot at decided they needed to have a gun free zone in the clubhouse, the rest is history.

Good idea scraping the rules and just having a fun shoot, I can see why it draws more.

BTW, Damn fine job shoveling the snow off! wink

I'm confused. Are you using small bore lever silhouette targets on the small bore rifle distances of 40, 60, 77, and 100 meters, or the smallbore lever distances of 40, 50, 75 and 100 meters?

Looks to me like you are using the standard smallbore distances, but with the larger 1/2 size targets for pistol and lever silhouette, sort of a local hybrid of the two disciplines.

Having been involved in the various forms of rifle silhouette since the mid 1970s, I have to say what you are doing seems like a good approach to getting shooters involved.

The problem with traditional NRA smallbore silhouette with the 1/5 scale targets is that it is simply too darned hard, meaning that if an average shot can't hit about half the targets, he will likely get discouraged pretty quickly. 50 percent is just my SWAG estimate, but it just seems to me that being able to hit half the targets is a pretty good point to grab the shooter's interest.

No, it's not at all a local hybrid, 40-50-77-100 meters are the official NRA Lever Action distances. the official 1/2 scale NRA targets are the targets for .22 Lever Action and Pistol Caliber Silhouette. Some of our shooters are dedicated NRA shooters, others are "just for fun" shooters.

The standard distances for Smallbore Silhouette (1/5 scale)are the same, except the pigs are at 60 meters instead of 50. Why the NRA moved the pigs to 50 for Lever Action is anyone's guess.

From at I've seen in about 15 years shooting smallbore and Hp silhoutte I'd say few new to the sport with all rules applied hit 1/4 of the targets . I'm still waiting on my first 40 crazy
Posted By: Paul39 Re: A day on the range - 02/27/15
OK, they're close but not identical. Per the NRA rule book, the turkeys for standard smallbore are at 77 (1/5 of 385 meters), and 75 for smallbore lever, a very minor difference.

Don't know why they changed the pigs from 60 to 50 for lever rifle. Does it have something to do with standard pistol distances? Since lever rifle silhouette was a relative newcomer, it seems there was a goal of using as many existing silhouette ranges as possible, rather than building new lines, which would make sense.

OK, I just checked the pistol silhouette rules, and the smallbore version distances are the same as for lever. So it appears that the targets and distances for lever rifle silhouette were adapted straight across from pistol silhouette, which makes sense. Maybe one of those rare occasions when powers that be actually applied common sense?

Similarity to smallbore rifle silhouette is coincidental.
