A police officer has been taken to Boston Medical Center after being shot in the face tonight while a suspect has been killed, police said.

"We have one officer fighting for his life. He's in tough shape. He's in an induced coma," said police Commissioner William Evans. "He's in critical condition."

Evans identified the officer tonight as 34-year-old John T. Moynihan -- a former Army Ranger who served in Iraq and was honored at the White House last year for being one of the first responders in Watertown following the April 2013 firefight with the marathon bombers.

Chief William Gross told the Herald the suspect in the shooting was killed. No further information was available about the dead man.

Both were shot on Humboldt Avenue in the area of Ruthven Street shortly before 7 tonight after police pulled over a car. An innocent bystander was also wounded in the arm, police said.

At a press conference outside Boston Medical Center, Evans said the officer was shot under the right eye right after the car was pulled over and the officer "returned fire."

"The doctors are working hard on him," Evans added. "(The suspect) came out firing before our officers had time to react."

The shooting scene in Roxbury has been closed off as teams of officers sweep the area.

Evans said the shooting tonight points to a problem of danger on the streets.

"There's way too many guns out there and way too many kids running with them out there," he added.

Mayor Martin J. Walsh said tonight he's praying for the officer: "My thoughts and prayers are with the Officer injured tonight, his family and friends and the entire Boston Police Department during this difficult time. These acts of violence have no place in our neighborhoods. Our community is stronger than ever, and tonight we are thankful for all of those who put their lives on the on the line every day to protect our City."

The problem is they aren't "kids running with guns", they're criminals and you have a crime problem....

Prayers for Officer John Moynihan complete recovery.

And good riddens to the perp who shot him.
Posted By: antlers Re: Hang in, Officer - 03/28/15
Lot easier for the police commissioner to blame the 'prevalence of guns' than it is for him to blame the prevalence of criminals.
I hope the officer survives and heals up as well as he can.

No snarky and no bs. Police officers do not want you to have the firearms privileges they are supposed to have.

I also pray someone wasn't standing by with a cell phone camera so we can depend entirely on the police side of the story to prove the perp guilty.

Kudos to the state of Texas for trying to get us back to that better time. I am sure Massachusetts will follow since democrats tag along where Republicans have already blazed the trail.

Not a troll at all and don't get off on replies.

I like that the perp is guilty without trial and just hope no one has a cell phone video to cast doubt on what happened as is so often the case.

No trial. The other Boston cops gunned the MFer down like the dog he is (was) after he shot their partner in the face at point blank during a routine traffic stop.

The cop who took a round just under his right eye is still alive and fighting for his life.

Oh I agree! No trial is best for officers. Too bad the real perps in this incident didn't pull a gun on Sgt. Guzman so he and his Boston PD brothers/sisters could have gunned them down like the dogs they are.

Bullet is still lodged in his head behind an ear. No idea what kind of slug he got hit with, but it was a .357 mag round out of a wheelgun. He emptied same at the other cops as he attempted to flee, but no other hits were made by him.

A total of 6 gang unit cops were on scene making the original stop, and of the 5 still capable of doing so, at least three opened up with their sidearms and killed him then and there.

The specific area of the shootings is a very tough neighborhood (Humboltd Ave @ Ruthven in Roxbury), and has been for a long, long time; thus the gang unit presence. I hope that Officer Moynihan pulls through. It's a thankless and difficult job, working the mean streets in these kinds of neighborhoods, and these guys often really do earn their pay. They sure did that day.

Roxbury was a snake pit back in 1972... I'm sure there has been no improvement.....

Where is Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton? They should be apologizing for one of their flock shooting an officer, as they darn sure are real vocal when a white officer shoots one of their flock....

Excellent new development today. Tough bastard, that one.

*************************************************

BOSTON (CBS) – The decorated Boston police officer who was shot in the face during a traffic stop has returned home.

The Boston Police Department announced on Saturday that Officer John Moynihan was released from the hospital. Moynihan’s condition is described as “serious but improving” after he was shot in the face at point blank range on March 27 in Roxbury.

Related: DA Releases Video Of Boston Police Officer Shot In Face

“In the days after the shooting, John and his family have been strengthened, humbled and inspired by the outpouring of love and support they’ve received – not only from his closest friends and fellow officers – but also from concerned citizens and strangers from all over the country wishing him a full and speedy recovery,” Boston Police said. “Above all else, John would especially like to thank and acknowledge the officers on scene for the lightening quick reaction and response that he credits for saving his life.”

Moynihan’s road to recovery is described as “challenging,” and Boston Police said he will continue to rehabilitate his injuries.

On Friday Suffolk County District Attorney Dan Conley released video of the shooting.

The video appears to show suspect Angelo West get out of his car as officers approach without their guns drawn. He then is seen shooting Moynihan at close range and running before officers eventually shoot and kill him.

Conley’s office is continuing to investigate the shooting.

Moynihan is a decorated officer and former Army Ranger who was honored for his role in saving the life of Transit Officer Dic Donohue, who was injured during a shootout with Tamerlan and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev.
