...better known as the yellow bellied marmot.
I don't know how official this record is or if there is even an official record at all. The Bliss, ID annual Rock Chuck Derby has been a popular charity event for many years. 11 year old Axl Roe popped the biggest chuck ever taken at the event at 17.46 lb. The previous record was 17.11 lb. In the past, the biggest chuck won the derby. To make it more interesting, this year they used the combined weight of 5 chucks to determine the winner. Axl hauled in a bit over 79 lbs of furry meat to win the youth division.
Damn...wish I had known...

I killed one in yakima WA that went 22.5 pounds...and yes, we did haul his zzz in and weigh him. Looked like a grizzly cub....
Never weighed one, but 17 pounds sounds like a big RC.
79#'s for 5? This girl was shooting some big ones.
Boone and Crockett 'chuck? I like it.
After reading the title of this thread...It woulda been WAY better for you to post a picture of your granddaughter sitting on your lap..! grin
Seems like someone looking to sandbag would use the smallest and least destructive round they could find. Using something like a .25-06 with a 90 grain Sierra HPBT would leave 8 pounds of a 10 pound chuck scattered all over the rocks.

I was probably in college before I learned about their second name. Idahoans will scratch their head if you call them yellow bellied marmot.

Congrats to the young lady.

My rock chuck season has been poor, only got out once, much later than I like and they were wild and few by then. Still got a few, but not like some years where you kind of look for longer shots just to challenge yourself.

Not my granddaughter. I don't know her and I wasn't there. I just like to see kids out shooting, especially when one's successful like this girl.

Besides, of my 6 grandkids, the oldest just turned 4 and the only girl in the flock is only 6 months. grin
Awesome. I love watching kids get out and have fun shooting varmints. We are headed to Idaho to do just that this weekend.

My boys and I have taken a few world class 'chucks in Montana the last couple of years. I've had two that may go 18 lbs. The body (no tail) was 23 inches long, and 11 inches across at the widest point. Fatter than a rugby football. I have a few pics - it is obscene how big he was. Shoulda taken him to the taxidermist!
Guys who hunt the eastern woodchucks will find rock chucks to be on the puny side.

They are pretty strict on their trophy groundhog management in those parts.
I can't be the first, much less the only person who wondered about the parents who chose the young lady's name Axl Ro(s)e...
