We are rapidly approaching THE weekend for kicking off camping season. We have already head to the mountains twice this spring but have been hit with some pretty terrible weather both times.
Taking the whole family this weekend and meeting up at a different cabin with mtcurman and downstream Saturday night.
These are from last weekend. If you've never stayed in a Forest Service Cabin, you owe it to yourself to check them out. Some are better than others but this one is probably our favorite thus far. Only downside is it cost $20 a night.
More entertainment. This turned out to be a rabbit. Wish my son explained that before I cut up my bear tag.
Looks like a fun Mountain West springtime weekend. I've done many such spring weekends in similar weather, although usually not in such plush accommodations as a Forest Service cabin. Pussy.
Travis; Thanks for the photos - I was hoping these would show up and wasn't disappointed.
Congratulations on the bear - I've seen two about that size so far this year, one black and one that looked like a red setter.... I actually thought it was a red setter at first....
The horses are wild donkeys maybe Travis - I don't know much about horses either but have bought a tag...
Looking forward to more photos sir, thanks again and all the best to you and your fine family.
Good deal. Around here those cabins get booked so quickly it's damn near impossible to get one.
I would imagine having one season keeps them booked pretty solid.
Just one week prior to my being at this one you could not even access it. Plus it's about 50 miles one-way to the nearest gas pump. Keeps things more available more often. .

Dwayne Man!
This weekend will be more casual than the last two. Which for me, is pretty GD casual...
I'm letting my wife and baby come along this weekend as well. Memorial Day weekend is always fun for us.
Still got tags. Hopefully a bear walks through camp.

Youse guys that live in the mountains have way too much fun...
Travis; Thanks for the reply sir and I hope a bear walks through your camp too - wait, maybe I don't - not sure.....
We keep a wrist rocket c/w ball bearings by the doors of our place for walk through ursine visitors. The escalation of force is ball bearings and yelling, then bear spray if deemed safe or a Mossberg spewing Canuck loaded Gualandi slugs if the situation calls for it.
Thus far all the yard wanderers have responded to ball bearings and foul language in an acceptable fashion.
Anyway I didn't mention how uber cool the cabin looks and such a deal too. Much better way to dry out than in a tent - of that I'm sure and certain.
I found a perfect Tacoma and was going to do some wheeling and dealing earlier in the month. But a ton of BS happened and I couldn't go down and do the dealing I wanted to do.
I think these are some of those wild mustangs I'm always reading about. I don't know much about horses to be honest.
The wild mustangs look different around here because they descended from the camels originally brought over by the Vikings. We had some drop by to say howdy a couple of weeks ago.
Great pics and cabins. The growler and I spent last weekend in W. Yellowstone. Montana doesn't suck though there are a lot of trees. It is neat to expect to see critters at any time. Thanks for the pics.
Looks like he has the fundamentals wired, he will now be able to learn to shoot anything well. Making the hard stuff fun is the essence of good teaching.
If you guys have not already done so. You really need to buy a suppressor for your 22LR's.
I couldn't bring myself to shoot from indoors thru the open doorway with a supressed rifle. Makes my spine tingle thinking about someone walking around the corner and taking a slug in the guts.

There was a very high risk of that but I don't care.

Shooting off the front porch may be Nirvana.

When he has double action down, and can steal without getting caught, he will have graduated the Academy O' 'Flave.
I saw a segment about it on CBS This Morning, I think. They're nuts about it and have all these fancy recipes. It's a holdover from WWII, when there was a lot of it around. They regard Spam like Southerners do country ham.
For my part, when I was about 12, I went to an amusement park and rode the Tilt-a-Whirl right after eating a big Spam salad sandwich. Bad move; never got over it. Similar to what happened to me with my first dose of Scotch.

I don't expect you to take it seriously, but it is a risk worth considering. The shooter has a narrow focus and limited visibility, ingredients for an accident to occur.

I like it because Annie Wilkes put it in her meatloaf.

I'm not sure how you know that the shooter had a narrow focus and limited visibility since you are only able to see what the camera (with a VERY narrow focus) recorded from behind the shooter. I agree that safety is a primary concern that I'm confident Travis considered.

Yes. It is possible that somebody could have gone full ninja and trekked on foot for miles and approached our cabin without making a sound or announcing their presence. It is also feasible they would LEAP in front of the open doorway at the exact moment we were firing a shot and end their life.
They also could have driven down the road leading to the cabin. Of course, they would have to smash their vehicle through a locked gate (without us hearing them) to do so. They would also require the Batmobile and it would have to be engaged in stealth-mode as they made the approach leading up to the cabin. And of course punch the gas at the exact moment we blindly fired the next shot.
Another risk worth considering is a tree could have fell over and killed us both while sitting inside the cabin.
I think I'll rethink going to the woods this weekend.

Tell me again, which suppressors are you high on these days?
I looked into them before and got sidetracked. I have some time now and would like to get one for rimfires and one that will work on 204 and 223s to make hunting with the kids a little more fun.

Travis, you have a special gift. I just offered you some simple objective advice, that's all. I wouldn't teach a boy to shoot out a door like that. You are free to disagree. I think it's a bad idea. So sue me.
And please, don't don't feel sorry for me and hold back, knock yourself out funny boy.
You do whatever you want. I wouldn't feel comfortable doing it. I also don't rock climb or have sex with hookers. YMMV.
Hi - I wasn't there, have no idea of the environment or your safety rules, but I'm going to keyboard cowboy from a video that I saw on the interweb......

If you wouldn't teach it to my son I'd say I'm on the right track.

I bought a Tundra last December and since doing so I have discovered this is THE way to go.
It's like pulling nothing. Provides more space to drag more schit. And is a helluva lot warmer than an ATV.
I purchased a 2012 crewmax a few months ago the thing is a beast for sure . Pulls may boat much better than my 08 chitty . First week I had it I thought I was gonna get whip lash ever time I started to take off in the thing. Smoothest shifting truck I have ever road in .
It was funny to watch people approach this crossing on their $25K Razor. Get out. Look. Watch. Talk. Wait. Look some more. Than rev them up to about 8K and cross. Then hoot and hollar and be happy.
We took the Boyota across just to let them know all they really need is $1,500.00 and some Budweiser.

It is a ridiculously powerful motor.
I wish they'd put a 35 gallon tank on them though.
Had to return to the sanctuary that is the Hi-Line to find some decent weather.
Oldest female turns 8 this week so she has an upgrade coming. It's all zeroed and ready to slay schit. Red dots and semi-autos are far more effective in the gopher fields. She should be happy and she has certainly earned the graduation:
Hole. Lee. Fuggin'. Awesome:
Gotta stick with the service issue stuff on Memorial Day:

Nice pics. It looks like there might actually be someone out there with legs even whiter than mine. UBER white, one might even say...
Like the hazing Travis.. they've got to be able to operate under pressure and self doubt...I'm always talking smack to my kid, especially when it's a friendly competition or when money is involved....lol
Least you could do is teach the kids a useful skill, like riding on the hood of a pickup with a shotty in the lap and beer in hand...I had to learn that on my own. Be all you can be...chillrens' lives are at stake, dammitt!
Pretty sure my dad drove over a gopher yesterday and didn't even notice.
Hauled some 2 year old pairs out to pasture this morning. Let 'em mother up for a minute before they go out. Fix fence.
Got home and rerouted my down spout into a 'rain tank'(aka possible minnow tank, wife doesn't know it yet....). Uber rain lately and a minor swamp was forming. Good problem to have!
Wanted to drive up the road and check on a field but the boss says no driving.
Sam, if you do make that a minnow tank, be sure and get an aerator otherwise they'll go belly up in short order...
Glad you fellers had UBER weekends. Nash got his bear yesterday, and we were going to go again today, but it was rainy so we messed around here instead.

Sweet Ben!
Post pics of Nashs bear someplace we can find them...start your own thread. I wanna see them!
Cherish those moments bud because in less time than you can imagine they are gone. My two eldest circa 1998. They have been out of the house for four years...
Youngest still with us finishing 11th grade. This some years ago 250 Ackley'ing.

Davarino, did Flave' ette put the headstamp on the bastid badger?
Negative. We came over a hill and he was hauling ass through a pasture. I got my glass on him and saw it was a badger. Land owner said we'd see "at least one" and asked they all get shot regardless of season.
Anyway, he made it to his hole and disappeared. I ranged the mound @ 99yds and grabbed the CTR. I would have used the 22LR but the wind was an easy 20mph and I didn't want to miss the chance if he popped back out. Sure as schit stinks, he put his head up and mad-dogged us from a distance he incorrectly perceived as safe.

had to snicker a little bit at that post, I didn't realize i was not the only one to do stuff like that. I remember one night about six of us were chasing rabbits with big long sticks on a hard top scout. Worked pretty good until he hit a drainage ditch, and a couple of guys got some serious dirt road rash.
actually, considering the way they build front ends these days, sitting on the hood would be difficult. Now the hoods are domed and there's no bumper to rest your boots on...just sayin

Love when phugg er's start sproutin' rooster. Simplifies schit.
Yaknow.. that was I was thinking also. Looks an awful lot like the Infamous Flave on that bulk box. Cept I know none of the boolit manufactures could afford the royalties.

I'd accept payment in the form of Newports and Bent Nail.
