Gonna get me a pair of these in a couple months when their old enough. Anybody have any experience with them? Their 7/8 Sarplaninac, 1/8 Maremma. No sheep here, their from a line that is more social, want them for yard dogs. And yes, I've plenty of room for them.
Those are two very territorial breeds. Be careful!
The vet my wife works for owns the mom and dad. I went and checked out the pups and the dogs yesterday. The mom is a real sweetheart, dad was a bit standoffish. Of course she was with us, dunno how it would have gone over otherwise. grin From what I've read these and others like them are bred specifically in lines for different tasks. Some for stock protection, some for people/property protection, and some for fighting. The breeding pair mine are coming from are sheepdogs, but the mom is social the the owner believes these'll fit the bill for what I want.

I don't need or want some kind of badass fighting dog, just something that'll deter things from coming in my yard I don't want in my yard. I love german shepherds, I got really lucky on my male, conformationally and temperament he was awesome. But he's closing on 10 years and showing his age. And to get another that fits my bill I'd be paying big $$. And the wife is less of a fan of the GSD than I.
Had never heard of them.

They are some fury beasts.

Flave been stealing your beer?
They sound like a badass dog for a country place.

Wikipedia

The temperament of the breed is described as independent, reliable, protective but not snappy, incorruptible and devoted to its master. The breed is aloof with outsiders, and calm until a threat to the flock presents itself. The breed has an extremely protective nature. In the absence of a flock of sheep, the Šarplaninac will often treat its humans as sheep - herding them away from danger or undesirable areas. They are serene and majestic, gentle with children and smaller dogs. They are also highly intelligent and bred to work without human supervision while guarding the flocks in the high pastures. Young pups can kill small animals until trained not to hunt.

Like many of its cousin Mountain dogs, the Šarplaninac is a very serious and dedicated guard dog. Due to this, they are naturally suspicious of strangers and will need good socializing at a young age to lessen this innate personality trait. They are calm and gentle with their family but when faced with danger they become a formidable foe, not a suitable breed for all. Consistent and firm training is essential to ensure compliance
An ass hole owner + an ass hole dog. What could possibly go wrong?

What's the 10 year old GSD think about the new additions?
Sometimes it can get ugly...who goes and who stays?

I'd been looking at ovcharka's when this possibility raised it's fury head. I like the idea of knowing the owner of the dam and sire.

Hoping the fury is limited in scope. Furry however is undeniable.

Hoping they live up to the hype. grin Being slavic I'm sure they're retarded, but pretty anyways.

I'm naming them Snot and Rocket.

That is generally reserved for melanistic pit bull owners. Since I am a gentle man, if somewhat aloof, I believe these pups will get along fine with me.

Been meaning to ask, is Clarke your married name?

He'll be fine. We added a female GSD and a female aussie about 7 years ago so he's not alone. The current dogs split their time twixt the house and outside. They sleep inside. The new ones will live outside exclusively. And if the old dog don't like it, he'll get his arthritic ass beat.

I had to google melanistic.

Looking forward to the Sarplaninac Chronicles.

Geeez. If I were the breeder I wouldn't let you have one of my pups.

He's only raped ONE dog.

Give it a rest.

These aren't the first pups I've ever had. Nor am I an abusive owner. Truth be told I spoil the schit out of my critters, but that being said I've no tolerance for some behavior. And dogs ain't kids. Regardless how some people wish them to be so.
Fracking things are huge!

Do they eat wolfs or yotes?
Getting any LGD breed as a "yard dog" is asking for problems.

My distance to my closest neighbor is measured in miles. Not feet. Yard dog is a bit of a misnomer. I'll get whatever phoucing dog I see fit, but thanks for the the tip. FWIW my first and most beloved dog was a mutt from the pound. I'm not against mutts by any means, but I'm not bringing home something of unknown stock to my kids.

SH, that's why I went with pups from this particular bitch. The owner knows her stuff, and knows what I want from the dogs. I'm trusting in her. And having seen the parents, I'm not worried about it. I know what you are saying though, making a heeler a housedog, or the like. I might engage in a bit of hyperbole and stoke the fire here, but I'm not retarded.

Have to agree with that..it doesn't hold true in every case, but it would certainly be a red flag..I've seen to many problem Collies which were simply frustrated at not being able to "herd"..

Secondly, I would be careful about keeping "inside" and "outside" dogs as it can evolve into two "packs" with the associated problems that can bring..Again, its not something set in stone, but certainly something to be aware of..

The owner knows her stuff

That's hard to believe considering she's just mating mutts of mixed breeding

If you're not a [bleep] retard, why the [bleep] did you ask about people's experience with them?

Why not a Rottweiler?

If human intruders are your problem, I think that a "sheepdog" does not have the correct reputation even if they are a guard dog.

A GSD or Rotty is what people recognize as an "anti-intruder, stay the heck out" kind of dog, even if half of them aren't even guard dogs.
I confess I had to look one up, never heard of the breed before. They remind me a bit of a Tibetan Mastiff, though not as bulky. That thick coat should be good in the MT winters, so possibly a better choice than a Rott or a GSD.
Like moths to a flame. You can script threads on here before you even type out the first post, I swear to God.

They are an uncommon breed SH, was curious to see if anybody else on here had had one before. That simple.

So from what I gather the answer thus far is a resounding "no" from the 'fire.

DakotaDeer, a rotty doesn't have the hair coat to live outside here.

Yes, herding dogs generally need to have something to herd. Like heelers, collies, and some shepherds. These aren't herding dogs.

Sounds kinda like a cross between an Great Pyrenees and a Werewolf.
FUGGING HUGE
He may need a bigger horse trailer to get them to and from the vet.

Travis
If they slobber like a Pyrenees, count me out.
Cool looking dog. Seems as though you have the temperament researched, how about medical issues with the breed? Seems as a general statement, large dogs don't have long life-spans.

Not the best vid,...

I'm having a hard time figuring out the why of adding Mareema to the Sarplaninac,...Hybrid vigor for a closely bred strain ?
Might well be worth some HIP X-rays, prior to the jump. Hip displastic dogs suffer, and dogs in pain CAN be meaners.

We had some Komondors looking after wooolies up in Alberta once,...bad idea,....once they'd killed off the local Coyotes, they started running search and destroy operations on the neighbor's dogs, in an ever widening circle.

You said a "pair",...Dog and Bitch or a pair of Bitch ?

We've got a local and well respected hybrid,....they're just North of me, the "Pyratolian". They're BIG, and very home place / family centric,.....Good guards, but with a notable gentle streak.

Will be all ears and eyes waiting for pics and updates on your experience with this breed.

Figure 10-12. Both parents are good confirmation. Another plus buying from a vet. Hers have been xrayed etc and she wouldn't have bred them otherwise. Still, with big dogs it's always a bit of a gamble.

Ah yes someone with experience with the type.

No idea on the cross reasoning but sounds plausible. The have a full maremma as well, he's an older dog. Damn friendly. Still wearing scabs from the last interloper he killed not too long back.
I read as much as I could on the various breeds of this type. Komondors were out, as well as Kangals. Lots of health problems with Pyrenees.
These aren't going to be lay on the couch lapdogs, but they WILL be acclimated to my kids and the other dogs. Misplaced aggression gets it a bullet or a new home. I was a bit on the fence till I met the mother. I think these will be uber.
As to sex of the pair I dunno. Getting a pair so they have company outside and hopefully work as a team. Supposedly its best to have one of each rather than pair of the same to cut down competition and ensure happiness. Feng shui. smile. Regardless they'll be fixed before I take possession.

Pics and stories sure to follow. Fwiw the mom is grey with a black muzzle like the pics on Google. Dad is grey with a lot of white. Owner says the white comes from the maremma. All 10 of the pups are fawn colored with varying degrees of white points. I've no idea how they'll color out when grown. I was impressed with the long leggedness and agility of the pair. Not a heavy lumbering oaf type of dog.

pack structure in my abode has never been anything but the natural order of things. Kids and dogs both need correction at times. Time out doesn't work any better than farming them out to a third party for raising. Lots of theories on kid and dog raising. I'll stick with what I know works. wink

Holy CRAP ... what a gorgeous dog

Steve

I'd need a second job to feed them.
Gruff, those guys look like small bears.. Best of luck.. I love dogs but never heard of some of those mentioned in this thread..
Interesting stuff. If we make it north next spring, I WILL BE DARN SURE TO CALL AHEAD BEFORE I DROP BY..

Very best of luck with your project..
Are you sure Clark is your pal????
Here they be. 8 weeks old, 15 lbs and growing. grin The female has the chrome, her brother without. Cute little schits.

True on the kids part. Best we can tell dogs are MUCH better than kids.

I'd call the male Cecil, they look like a lion, beautiful dogs, keep us posted with pics, they have to love the winter time.
Had to google them as I had never heard of them. From what I read, they should be along the lines of the Great Pyrenees, and the ones that I had were great dogs. I really miss having them. The outside rescue dog that I have now is great, but I miss the Pyrenees. miles
but do you miss picking up after them?.....

From what I've gleaned these guys are less prone to wander than Pyrenees. Else they're likely to end up a big waste of time and money.

My Pyrenees did not roam when alone. Two would, but just turn one out of the fenced portion of the yard at a time. Before it starts, I live a long way from neighbors and they can't keep varmints in check when they are penned up. miles

Put me on the "can't wait to see how they turn out" list.
Hey! For a pile of that! You'd need a 50 lb garbage sack to light on someone's porch!!!! Oh the humanity!!!

Nice looking pups for sure!!!
Man those pups are gorgeous! Best of luck to you on the new adventure. Had not heard of them before now. I might recommend a small Bobcat and two yard dumptruck for yard cleanup duty! grin
