I will be out early tomorrow heading to Leadville to chase second season elk. I'll spend the night in Dalhart and arrive in Leadville just after lunch or so Wednesday. A buddy has been up there helping out a guy that drew first season. He tagged out on a 6x6 early afternoon of the first day (Saturday) and has already left for home. They scouted a couple of days prior and landed a heard of 63 with 3 6x6's, 5 5x5's and another half dozen smaller bulls. That is the heard he shot his bull out of. I will be hunting with my elk pard' of 21 years. For the first time in a number of hunts we both have bull tags. I spent the day handloading, packing the necessities and loading the truck. This year we have a small cabin (with H2O, power and wood stove) so plush compared to prior hunts, our camp for years below. Damn am I excited.
Good luck!
sounds like a great time to be had.
Good luck EdM. Im jealous.
Good luck. Be careful! Think how fast the Mooney could get you there. LOL

I have had that precise thought though Leadville weather can get freaky in a heartbeat as fall grows. The day before when the above photos was taken I was healing the worst face sunburn I have ever had.
I spent a week in Dalhart one day.
Actually had my alternator shiet the bed on me in Dalhart.
Have a great hunt Ed. We will want pictures.
Dalhart, long ass drive from here.
good luck Ed.
Old joke:
Two Texas Roughnecks were in the North Slope boom:
"How cold is it this morning?"
"Thermometer says 25 below zero".
"Damn, ain't you glad we ain't in Dalhart!"
Dalhart and Dumas. Two of my favorite Texas towns. Did you go by Raton?
Pretty terrific!!
It's on my bucket list, which begins next June!! Bye Blue!!
Ed, best of luck, and shoot straight..

I still own a Ruger OM Super Blackhawk that I bought there years ago returning from an elk hunt. Back when they were $350. Still works many years later.

I will. Usually fuel up there and have had killer green chili more than once.
Ed they (the state) has been working on the roads for you in that area. Between Dumas and Raton is where I got in one bad hail storm two years ago. 3 month old Jeep.
Have a good trip, pics. for sure and you will bring home an nice 5x5 OK. Help your bud if he needs it.
My priority is my bud and his elk. At 71 it is his last hunt. He is an old school guy that will be borrowing his wife's cell phone for the trip.
Me, there are a few to go, at least I hope.
Good luck Ed. I hope you have a great hunt!
Dalhart was my stopover for my elk hunt a week and a half ago. Be aware that all the local farmers are pulling corn now and the migrant labor has all the hotel rooms booked up! I stayed at the Roadway Inn and it was nice and clean. The nicer motels were slammed.
EdM, yall be careful, have a great time, and hope the hunt is successful.
(I had to google Dalhart and Raton to see where you were going- Yeah, I'm dumb)
Good Luck Ed, I haven't been to 49 in 6 years. I hope you both tag out on a couple bulls near a road!!!
Good luck EdM, for you and your partner. Sounds like my usual route when I go, we usually stop in Walsenburg.
Bastid!!! Git there before I do!!!
best of luck to you! hope you bag a bigun
Made good time so continued a bit into Clayton NM. All checked in and typing in the lobby of the Eklund Hotel. The bar opens at 4:30. Oops, need to run as a martini is calling.
Damn, they only serve beer and wine so a Sierra Blanca Alien Amber it is.
Best wishes. Enjoy your hunt.
Good luck, wish I were going!
