Regulation: As Americans sit down for their Thanksgiving feast, they likely don't realize that
another big, nonholiday-related expense is about to hit, courtesy of the Obama
administration: a new wave of regulations.

With little fanfare, the White House announced more than 2,000 new regulations — including
144 deemed "economically significant" — just before Thanksgiving.

The law requires doing this twice a year, and Obama has followed it faithfully — repeatedly
releasing rafts of costly new rules just days before holidays, when people are most distracted
and not paying attention.

Luckily, Heritage Foundation fellow James Gattuso is paying attention. He notes that the 144
new economically significant rules is a record, breaking the previous high of 136 set just last
spring.

The regulations, he adds, "span the full scope of American life, ranging from labeling
requirements for pet food, new test procedures for battery chargers, mandated paid sick
leave for contractors and automatic speed limiters for trucks to a dozen new rules limiting
energy use (and increasing the price) of everything from furnaces and dishwashers to
dehumidifiers."

Those rules might not sound so bad, but that phrase "economically significant" means that
each of them will cost the economy at least $100 million.

So, at minimum, those 144 new rules will cost us north of $14 billion a year. That doesn't
include the other 1,856 or so new rules, which will cost billions more.

And remember: Regulation has a cumulative impact on the economy. It builds with time, going
from molehill to mountain fairly quickly, a dead weight on the economy that lowers our
standard of living.

By any gauge, the regulatory state today is immense.

In its recently released 2015 report on regulation, the Competitive Enterprise Institute
estimated that government rules impose a cost of roughly $1.88 trillion a year on the U.S. —
or about $5,875 a year per person.

It not only hurts our economy by adding costs without offsetting benefits but also robs us of
our basic liberties.

Charles Murray recently nailed it when he wrote, "Congress passes laws with grandiose goals,
loosely defined, and delegates responsibility for interpreting those goals exclusively to
regulatory agencies that have no accountability to the citizenry and only limited accountability
to the president of the United States."

So, by all means, in the spirit of the season, let's give thanks for all the things that make this
the greatest country on Earth. But runaway regulation isn't one them.

Yep, and you can tell by all those that defend him, it is hard to believe that after the fiasco that is his legacy, that they still have not awoken to reality.

Just as up here we had the liberals voted in again, so we too could have our cross to bear.

This.

BHO is not incompetent, he is intentioanlly governing -actually ruling- in keeping with his collectivist/socialist beliefs in order to create a communist society.

The people who elected and support him share his beliefs and will continue to support him. These people will only vote for other candidates -Clinton and/or other socialists and communists- who will continue their work of dismantling a formerly constitutional republic and replacing it with a statist tyranny.

The problem we are facing is no longer the past dynamic of a representative democratic electoral process mediated by 2 parties, both of which had been dedicated to American constitutional principles, in the past. We now have factions representing 2 fundamentally irreconcilable visions for our Nation, one of which is unrepresented by either current political party.

IMO, it is unlikely we can find a way to compromise and return to foundational principles as a single republic, given a gargantuan extra-constitutional Federal government as currently organized and in the context of its current relationship with the several States.

When constitutionally conservative Americans accept this view, we can start enacting realistic solutions to re-institute the US Constitution, at least in those sates whose citizens decide to remain Americans.

You all do realize that the President has very little to do with any rule making or its reporting... which all Federal agency's are required to do, and not necessarily at the same time.

Just more right-wing propaganda BS!

And the photo, that was from; President Obama's remarks delivered on the economy in La Crosse, Wis., on July 2, 2015.

GG

You believe everything you read in the LA Times, right?
No, I don't get or read the L.A. Times, and don't believe anything I read in any of them on the few occasions I'm pointed to a story in one of them.

You must be kidding, right? Who do you think appoints the dictators of these agencies? Who do you think they answer to? Sheesh!
Appointing an agency head has very little to do with rule making or reporting which is governed be law. Rules and rule making is up to the agency, congress, and the judicial system. each agency reports once a year date and time aren't governed as far as I know.

The process is done according to law once a year by all Federal agency's... every year, no matter what president or party is sitting.

The rules them selves that are reported are not limited to new rules but also those that are changed and or done away with and of course any new ones.

If you think that this is all done by the President or even under close watch by the President, well you don't understand the government.

Yes and this website keeps em off the streets, thank god.
Appointing supreme court justices has just as little to do with the outcomes.

I don't really believe in the tooth fairy, either

Only a socialist who truly believes that the ends justify any means to further his twisted utopian view of the world would stretch the truth about executive branch rule making under the current regime, as you've done.

Clearly it is not the POTUS who "under close watch" develops the rules. It is the handpicked ideologically committed socialists he has entrenched throughout the agencies who do that. A cute little rhetorical trick on your part, but it's a distinction without a difference.

Most of the time the bureaucratic rule making significantly changes the intent of the laws Congress passes. It is executive overreach through so called 'rule making' that has led to the current state of Federal tyranny that regulates every aspect of each citizen's life.

No better example exists than the EPA, HHS, Dept. of Education.

As to the Federal judiciary's involvement in checking the power of Executive branch agencies, the Circuit Court for DC is a rubber stamp for regulatory despotism - it never met a Federal regulation it didn't like. And with respect to the current SCOTUS' role in checking this imperial POTUS, witness ARA (Obamacare) and John Roberts' role in abetting the unconstitutional power of the POTUS by creating new legislation from the bench.

You obviously either live in a fantasy world or you are just another propagandist enabling the progress of statist rule. Either way I would ignore you but you're not worth the effort.
