Can I safely fire over the counter 44/40 in an older model 92 Winchester
Is the over the counter stuff or the cowboy loads adequate for deer out to 50 to 60 yards? I realize it is down loaded, but it sure is accurate in my old rifle. Don't mean to side track a thread, just thought I might carry it a step further.
Shoot schit. It will die.

this with the added , placement , placement, placement.
I know a fella who has killed a bunch of elk & mule deer with a 44/40 'cause that's all he had when he was growing up.
As was posted above, placement, placement, placement.

Well, it worked. I have a Remington 14 1/2 in 44/40 and the only ammo I can find is Cowboy action stuff. It seems kind of anemic after shooting 44 magnums but it sure is easy to hit with. I gave it a try this morning and had a nice 6 point step out at about 75 yards or a little further. The bullet went through ribs on each side and the deer went about 30 yards. The bullet was not recovered. I sure would have liked to have seen what it looked like after going through the deer. Thanks for the comments encouraging me to take one of my favorite rifles on a hunt.
Love to hear stories like that/
outstanding! i am reconstructing a 1894 marlin in 44/40 and hoped to hunt with it but can't find the hammer spring.
44's rule!

That's pretty cool. I wonder how long its been since somebody killed one with a Remington 14 1/2. Congrats.
In one of Teddy Roosevelt's writings, he declared the 44/40 good enough to kill grizz with but any smaller caliber wasn't adequate.
Those factory rounds that you can buy over the counter are loaded with what appears to be 7gr of Unique. If so, it's a pretty mild load. OK for the 92's but I think I'd keep it out of the toggle link actions, aka, '73 Win and such. I think I paid 70 bucks for a box a couple years ago down at Readys in Oklahoma. The 44-40 is just about as much fun to shoot as the 25-20.
Great job! As good as the Remington 14 1/2 points, you probably could have made that shot with just a bead for a front sight. Like a shotgun. It is probably the most natural pointing iron sight rifle I've ever shot and perfectly suited to the 44/40.
