Saw this on FB and thought of some of the welders on the fire.

I'm a material man not a welding inspector or Level III X-Ray tech, but it sure looks pretty to me.

There is nothing I enjoyed more in my career than watching some of the crazy welding we had to do. The best were just incredible.

I have worked with several guys who could do work like that with stick or TIG. Me: I can usually keep the water inside the pipe.

As a welding inspector for the past 27 years I have seen every type

I have seen several Artists in my carrier and when I do it blows my mind on what they can do.

The spacing of the puddles almost looks mechanical as perfect as it is.

I'm not even calling myself capable of mud daubering compared to that...

Nope, that is TIG welding by hand.

I watched a guy that taught welding in the Pipe fitters union here in So. Cal.

I was his inspector.
he TIG welded two Stainless Steel 4 fittings in less that ten minutes.
His elbow was just a goin. I had my hood on trying to learn how he Walked the cup as they call it.
he was moving so fast that I had a hard time trying to keep up with him and stay out of his way.

When he finished it looked like a Diamond Back snake skin and was just a little hazy brown tarnish look to it very little blue

That was just 4 months ago.

Artists are a joy to watch he made it look like a robot welded it but it was all him.

And his helper could care less about what the guy did. I wanted to slap the helper to knock some sense into him.

I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say that that is probably not his first effort.

I'm not good enough to TIG that pretty, but I got so that I could do nice work with a TIG. I was never any good with a stick or MIG welder but a shop that I worked at had a little scratch start TIG that I started playing with. Eventually they upgraded to a Miller unit that had a pedal. I bought the same model when I opened my shop. The thing I like about a TIG is that you can see the puddle as you weld.

With a stick or MIG welder you can't see what you're doing,...you can only see what you've done.

I'll bet that pipe is 304 stainless. It makes those rainbow colors when you TIG it.

I can weld pretty good, but nothing like that

a 'while' ago in high school, a few of us got to take an elective class called 'bus shop'. The bus mechanic was a good guy and if you were a good football or bball player you got to take the class and basically BS for an hour and learn to weld/solder/etc and occasionally have to wash a school bus. There would be two guys every hour/period of school. On welding days, it would be a competition. Each of us would weld a bead, whoever's bead looked the worse would have to clean the shytter. I learned several skills that are still in use to this day. I made several projects that are still in use also.

I'm sure a stop would be put to that class real quick these days. Mucho hijinx, like taking the HOT vise-grips that were used to hold a welding project and innocently tossing them to the freshman student who just walked in, and howling while they squealed.

I'd say that he was too. Looks like he's got it down pretty good. Or her, some of the most precise tig welders I have ever seen were woman.

My guess would be oilfield service so 2205 duplex stainless alloy

There are some good ones..I made a living as a welder for awhile, but I'm a damn hack compared to my old man.He was Navy trained and finished up as a contractor for NASA.

he tells me the best he ever seen was a woman that worked on a service vessel for the Navy.

I learned to gas weld in gunsmithing school 40 yrs. ago, picked up TIG when I worked in Browning's gunsmithing shop. Toward the end on my career I did MIG welding when I got involved in special machine building, welded machine bases and various other details. It is a skill that came in handy over the years, most of my welding was on carbon steel with just a little stainless and aluminum.

My ex is capable of work like that. Spent most of her life on her back welding stainless overhead for a defense contractor then went to TIGing rocket engines.

I know just enough about welding to be very impressed with that job.

There are quite a few us. And I have worked with many Korean and Vietnamese that were as good as they get!

Used to be a fellow here that had a machine shop, fix-it type place. Wife worked for him a couple of days a week bookkeeping when we first married. I was working on the brakes on my pickup and twisted off the bleeder valve. I took the piece off and took it down to his shop, figuring he had a tool to get it out. Instead he welded down in that tiny hole and built it out the top, took a small pair of pliers out of His pocket and unscrewed the valve. No way I could have stuck a rod down in that hole with a hood on. He had lots of tricks to do things. miles

Another fellow that I knew made some fantastic belt buckles out of small stainless pipe of differing sizes. I think while working in Alaska but not sure. miles

It's unbelievable what a good welder can do.

Personally, I flunked metallurgy in college. I can only stick weld enough to get myself in trouble.

I am a stick hack at best, but picked up a TIG capable machine a while back (Miller Econo-Twin II) and while researching TIG guns ran across this video.

I finally broke down and picked up a tig finger. I didn't like the price to much but it sure works for what it's intended to do.
Somebody's made a boat load of money off of them.

I used a build up of 680 TiG to remove a broken 8-32 bolt
