Greetings everyone. I trust we are all doing fine with our new president only 8 days away. I am writing cause a year ago or so there was a thread on tinnitus, a ringing in a persons ear. I have had it for years and seems to be getting worse. Has anyone had good results with any medication on tinnitus? I would appreciate any feedback. Thanks. ihookem.

Have had it for over 50 years. Nothing helps but to just ignore it.
Posted By: WyColoCowboy Re: tinnitus - 01/12/17
I'm 4 years in and just ignoring it.
Posted By: LBP Re: tinnitus - 01/12/17
About 10 years for me. Yep just ignore it.
Posted By: Muffin Re: tinnitus - 01/12/17
If I stop and think about it it's there....probably for 20 years now, gradually increasing, I guess...

If you can, lower your blood pressure. Doesn't make it go away but it reduces the volumn....

Wear plugs and muffs around noise .....

Someone in the earlier thread mentioned aspirin causing tinnitus. I quit taking a low dose aspirin each day and it went away. Sure it doesn't work in all cases, but it did in mine.

Keep your mind busy and it's easy to ignore.

Thanks to the USMC I've lived with it for close to 48 yrs. No cure, I just live with it. I get some $'s from the VA, but it ain't much.

45 years and counting. Don't hear it unless I think about it or get some place real quiet.

Thanks for reminding me!

1 year in and I just try my best to ignore it. Staying hydrated, cutting back on salt helps, but it hasn't stopped for me.

PITA isn't it? Some days seem a lot worse than others. I tried the Lipo-Flavonoid, but it didn't seem to help much. Ear plugs seem to help more than anything, but I'm deaf at that point. Grin & bear it, I guess. Too much shooting without ear protection when I was younger is what I blame it on, but I'm sure there are a lot of contributing factors; chain saws, skil saws, and working in a forge shop for 35+ yrs. What's that? LOL

I have taken Lipo-flavinoid for years. It keeps my tinnitus under control. Below is what I put in a thread about tinnitus back in 2010.

More recent studies show that Lipo-flavinoid is a significant help for 1/3 of those that try it. 1/3 of the people get slight improvement. And 1/3 of the people get no improvement at all.

Here is the thread:

Here is a product that has helped me:
https://lipoflavonoid.com/content/6-about-lipo-flavonoid-plus

http://www.lipoflavonoid.com/Pages/LipoHome,

I was getting desperate and the Dr. was no help. I ran across a magazine article by a Dr. that recommended various products for various problems that he had found usefull. I was skimming the article because I didn't have any of the problems addressed until I came to Tinnitus and he recommended "Lipo-Flavonoid" by DSE Healthcare Solutions. I was skeptical, but the writer didn't sound like a quack that was being paid off. I figured it was worth a try. The writer said it would take about six weeks to see results. The bottle says to take 3 tablets a day, one after each meal, and "for best results, use for at least six months".

Well, it worked for me. After about six weeks I woke up one day and realized about 80% of the Tinnitus was gone. By the six month point about 90% was gone. Then I dropped down to two tablets a day, One morning, one night, and the relief has stayed the same. I have been taking it for over two years now.

The ingredients are several B vitamins, vitamin C, bioflavinoids and inositol, whatever those are. I found the best place to purchase these is WalMart, for $24.89 a bottle of 100 caplets. The chain drugstores that have it all charge about $30. At WalMarts it is always located pretty close to and a couple of shelves below the Centrum Silver vitamins.

I am very glad I stumbled onto someting that helped me. They even taste good. I never tried any other products, but I know this one helped me. Best of luck to all of you.

Listen to loud music and it goes away.

Tried hearing aids with so called masking noise, they were no help. Any OTC meds are snake oil, no remedy other than to live with it.
Posted By: saddlesore Re: tinnitus - 01/12/17
Stay away from cold/flu meds. They make it worse
Posted By: joken2 Re: tinnitus - 01/12/17

Had it for a good bit of my adult life with increasing intensity the older I got. Some days are a little better than others but never has completely stopped. Can't remember what it's like to not hear the ringing.

Ear plugs made no difference whatsoever as the ringing is deep inside my ears. I usually manage to ignore it most of the time but it helps a lot to have some kind of external noise like a radio or TV turned on with the volume turned up enough to distract from the ringing. It can be extremely annoying in total silence.

All I've ever read is there is no cure for it as the damage is permanent and not repairable.

As always, YMMV.

My wisdom teeth have been gone for years with no noticable change for the better.

I still have all of mine.....one is almost like another molar, the others are growing toward the front of my face...
Posted By: joken2 Re: tinnitus - 01/13/17

One of mine was growing almost sideways toward the front of my face too. The old orthodontist about stroked out trying to get all the tooth and roots out. He had to stop cutting and yanking for breathers a few times. Scared me as he acted like he was about ready to give up and leave me with half of a wisdom tooth still in my butchered up mouth. Finally did get it all though. Handed me a little white envelope full of Demerol tablets as I was leaving.

I've had it for at least fifty years.Nothing I've ever tried for it helped.Sometimes I just wished it had more rhythm to it than that dang old constant ring.I find some noises irritating to it,like a ceiling fan.I have to turn up the volume on the tv when the fan is on.Wife gets pizzed because I can't hear what she says or I think she says something different.I keep telling her it's the dang fan! It's not that the fan is noisy,it's just like someone is blowing constantly in my ear and it distorts sound. The fan makes it sound like crickets in a wind storm. She has the fan on in the bedroom too.I have to cover my ears so I can give my crickets some relief from the hurricane.
Posted By: WayneShaw Re: tinnitus - 01/13/17
Mine comes and goes, it gets bad sometimes for no apparent reason. When I have a "flareup" everything I hear has a high pitched reverberating/tinny sound to it. I have noticed if I spend time outside in cold windy weather, it makes it flare up.
Posted By: lightning Re: tinnitus - 01/13/17
I have had it for years. Sounds like cicadas buzzing 24/7, and of course worse at night. I just recently got hearing aids. I originally went to the Silverstein Institute in Sarasota for testing and recommendations. One of their first questions, after testing, was whether I had Tinnitus. They said they had hearing aids with a Tinnitus feature that would help, but not eliminate it. Long story short, they wanted $6500 for them. I did a little research on line, and found COSTCO sold the same brand for $2500, but without the Tinnitus feature. As gunswizard stated here earlier, I think the Tinnitus feature is just a marketing tool. Good luck.

if i eat a really salty meal my right ear is singing within 10min. i have costco hearing aids and they do help mask the ringing.costco has some hearing aids cheaper than the 2600.00 that mine were. i was lucky ,wife works for ups and there insurance covers 85% on hearing aids.
Posted By: JamesJr Re: tinnitus - 01/13/17
Have had it for many years. The older I get, the worse it gets. It was affecting my hearing, so I finally broke down and went to an ENT specialist. He told me there was nothing that would help it. He sent me to a hearing clinic, and my insurance paid for hearing aids. They help the hearing some, but not the ringing. I just put up with it, and thinking about it makes it worse.

Sometimes like giant breakers hitting the beach only constant -- no interludes. At other times like now, reading this thread, I almost have to "listen" for it; very subdued.

Too many gunshots over the years with unprotected ears I'm sure -- who knew in the sixties, seventies, and even eighties?. I can actually point to one occasion where I acutely injured my inner ear. It was in AK and I had a 340 Wby, braked (the original KDF Recoil Arrestor) and took a shot at a big bull caribou. After field dressing, I unscrewed the thing, replaced the cap and later threw it away. Never again.

My guide and I had a headache for most of the day. I can only wonder at the decibels I released some forty inches away from my ears.

Hearing test in the mid-2000's showed some high range frequency loss. Yea, I know. I've worn digital in-the-ear protectors since. But as the saying goes, what was done cannot be undone.
Posted By: Rock Chuck Re: tinnitus - 01/13/17
Tinnitus is caused by damage to nerves in the ear. It manifests itself in many ways so we can't just say it's this or that. Its different for each person.
Ear plugs, muffs, etc can't help it because it's coming from the nerves, not outside the ear. It's not real noise. Plugs might have a placebo effect for a while but they don't stop it. In some people it can be debilitating.

There are treatments to reduce it but it's incurable. The type of treatment that works for any person is highly variable because the problem is so variable.

FWIW, there are 2 ways to pronounce it.
Most of us commoners say tin EYE' tus. Researchers and many doctors call it TINN' itus.

I didn't get a ringing in my ear until 2006-2007 I was in Iraq and them insurgent [bleep] had a steady supply of rockets. First one landed by the dfac at lunch time like 75 meters to long if that thing would landed 75-100 meters short probably wouldn't be typing this right now. Later on they hit the camp with a barrage of rockets. I'm going to stop come to think of it we were constantly getting hit with rockets. Now I have this ringing in my ear to remind me of those great times in Iraq.. almost forgot in Afghanistan at fob Salerno we got lit up pretty good one night the New England patriot cheer leaders were there on a uso trip and I guess they were wiggling the ph uck out crying they were to young to die lol the sr nco's in charge of handling them witnessed the big meltdown.

bsa1917hunter,

There is no downside to trying the Lipoflavinoid, and there are no side effects. It is basically a tailored vitamin pill. B Vitamins and the flavinoid ingredient.

Over the years I have recommended it to several friends. A couple it didn't help at all, but a couple of friends got significant relief, just as I did.

Once when I ran out, I didn't take it for a few days. In about three days my tinnitus started coming back very noticeably. I started taking it again and the tinnitus lowered back down within two days. So I am convinced it helps me.

The instructions on the Lipoflavinoid says that it takes up to, or about, 60 days to get results. In my case, and my friends, we didn't notice anything for about six weeks, then there was a definite improvement. If you try it for 60 days and don't get results, the company will refund your money, if you want to go to the trouble of writing them.

That means that you have to buy two bottles in order to see if it will work for you. One bottle won't last long enough. Wal-Mart carries it in the vitamin section, usually not far from the Centrum Silver.

After I got results I dropped down to two pills a day, one morning and one at night. I have been taking it for about 8 or 9 years.

When I get a head cold my tinnitus gets very bad, reminding me that I still have it, and how bad it was. When I get over the cold it goes away and I seldom notice it.

Very loud noise will bring it back for a few hours, sometime. It is a curse on mankind, for sure.

I have been using Magnesium Citrate for years and it does help mine. Start out with 200 mg and see if it doesn't help you out. The RDA is 400 mg. Take it with food, it can upset your stomach.

High blood pressure is definitely a factor. I have tinnitus, and I notice that it gets worse when my bp is high. Was so bad a couple of months ago that I went to the Doc for a checkup. Sure enough, bp was 160/105. Headed in the right direction now, down to 135/95.

I have a little speaker next to my bed. It makes a sound like a window air conditioner. \\

You can vary the volume and tone. Its pretty good for background noise.

Also drowns out a little light snoring from the missus.

low salt diet/lower blood pressure in most cases. less ringing.eat something really salty and pay attention, within 10min you'll be ringing like crazy.

I have had it since the late 60s, started from driving cleat tractors with no hearing protection and progressed when I was shooting all the time with no hearing protection and working in the farm shop with no hearing protection. I have the constant ringing in my hears. Some days it is louder than others and I have very low blood pressure. I like to have backround music going all the time or just have the TV on just so there is some type of white noise going. Been told by my doctor to live with it. Does not really bother me, just an annoyance that I live with.
Posted By: stantdm Re: tinnitus - 01/14/17
Reading this made mine much worse than normal. Just the thought I guess.

Mine showed up about 40 years ago when I stuck my head in an enclosed cargo box and used a sledge to loosen up a joint that was glued to the top of a Land Cruiser. The concussion was painful and a week or so later the ringing was noticed.

Like most folks it never goes away but if you are doing something and not focused on the ringing it isn't a big deal. If you lay down in a quiet room it can get very frustrating until you forget about it.
