Cops just chased a guy into the parking lot out our back door. I'm upstairs in a two story building seeing everything. Guy stops halfway down lot, exits vehicle, pulls a 1911 from waist and puts it to his head. Continues walking across lot. He eventually stopped, kept his back turned to the now growing number of LEO's. They're yelling to drop weapon, he yelling something inaudible back. After 2-3 minutes of this I heard it. Looked back out window and he's slumped on ground.
Ambulance was in no hurry.

Pray it's not one of our veterans....
I'm glad he didn't come into your store.

Doors were locked pronto.
clearly god was having his will be done. sometimes people die or are gravely injured. it's how the world operates. nothing to be concerned about.
Sad, whoever it was
what brand of 1911?

Never saw him any closer than about 30-40 yards. I will rephrase to say a '1911ish looking pistol'. Definitely not a Glock type as it had silver rails etc.
An update: he was apparently flown to a larger hospital so I guess he wasn't as intent on taking his life as it appeared. Once the ambulance pulled in our view was completely blocked. There was no rushing around going on or lights on upon leaving so assumptions were made[I know]. Thinking back last night I began to wonder if he was actually dead or not and couldn't say he was 100%.
All I know is that I heard the shot, looked back out the window and he was laying slumped on the ground, then the ambulance pulled in blocking view.
The whole ordeal lasted between 5-10 minutes and was really surreal.

If it was a Colt, I hope he didn't scratch it when he dropped it.

The police may have shot him to keep him from killing himself (It happens). Though it would probably have been a volley if so.

Maybe he flinched and missed centering his melon?
Police DID NOT fire.

Wrong.

Police can only use deadly force when the person is a threat to others.

It is not justified when they are a threat only to themselves.

I cannot think of a single instance where cops shot someone only threatening themselves.
Glad he wasn't inclined to take anyone with him.

This was heavy on the police's mind I'm sure. The parking lot is a Municipal/City owned lot. This transpired right around 4:00PM. The lot is always busiest early morning, lunch time and late afternoon. The area where this ended is basically a choke point where most folk that park here walk in/walk out. Someone thought that it might turn real bad as there were no less than 3 ambulances lined up in the street on the other side of our building before it was over. Many pedestrians returning to their vehicles would not have been able to see what was going on until they were almost on top of it.
I do remember a video where a police sniper shot a pistol out of a guy's hand, when he was in public threatening to kill himself

Yeah, they made a police training video of that, to show cops what not to do. wink

Although he wasn't seriously hurt, it could have been a lawsuit nightmare. Imagine had his hand been blown off, and deadly force was not justified.

I was kind of thinkin that, and if they cleaned it, blood being acidic and all.
In the 70's as a young man i had a friend from childhood. He got rather drunk at college upset at the loss of his long time girl friend and put a .38special to his (he thought) head and pulled the trigger.
aiming wasn't too good, so he severed his spine.
been in a wheel chair the last 50years. She married somebody else.

I'll bet most of the folks that work on that end of main street park there.

Yep, really isn't anywhere else to park.[main reason I've sat on this old building so long wink ].
Something else that came to me today: he was followed into the lot by Radford University Police initially. He was apparently up to no good over on campus.
The local news said that it started at RU with their cops chasing him.
