Cool Hand Luke Lots of movies where the protagonist dies but I don't know if you could call him the "hero". Scarface with Al Pacino is one of those.
This doesn't quite qualify since the character who dies isn't really a hero, but in No Country for Old Men , the bad guy wins and kills the protagonist the audience would typically root for. It was a good movie IMO.
The ward supervisor nurse in "One Flew Over the Coco's Nest" same as killed the 'hero'.
don't forget Sherlock Holmes and Moriarty at The Falls. the choreographer for that scene trained me.

Sacrilege around here but holy cow M7 does not hold up well. Sorry. Great, stirring music going for it but I swear putting on Saturday Night Fever in its soundtracks place would make that movie a heck of a lot more enjoyable. I start rooting for the Mexicans long before Robert Vaughan bites the dust.
