Why not just move the homeless family in with the Citizens? Would save the middleman. laughing

Quote
With more than $300,000 and volunteer homeowners, Multnomah County has a new idea to fight homelessness: Build tiny houses in people's backyards and rent them out to families with children now living on the street.

The homeowners would pay nothing for the construction. They would become landlords and maintain the units for homeless families for five years.

Then the tiny houses would become theirs to do with what they want. If the homeowners break the contract before then, they pay the cost of construction.

The project would put the 8-month-old joint homeless office - a shared effort between the county and Portland -- in the housing business while offering an innovative, if so far small-scale, way to chip away at Portland's affordable housing shortage.

Four tiny houses are tentatively scheduled to launch this June at $75,000 apiece, with the hope for up to 300 accessory dwelling units as they're known in the next year if the first ones work out.

The Multnomah County Idea Lab, a 2-year-old office focused on using out-of-the-box thinking to create public policy, combined tactics of the Federal Emergency Management Agency with a county weatherization program to come up with the plan.

The tiny houses would help fill the need for low-income housing before the recently passed Portland housing bond and private developers can build the 24,000 units that studies say the city needs to stem its housing crisis.
Lol, What about the single or married without children homeless, this is clearly a racist hate filled bigoted endeavor.

What kind of an idiot would want that in the backyard? None of the tiny homes will be livable after 2 years, let alone 5. They'll be nothing but drug dens and meth factories.
In addition, OR has renter protection laws. If they're there at the end of the 5 years, the homeowner has no way to collect rent or evict them. He could be stuck with them for years.
Yes, I am sure they'll put the homeless right back out on the street after 5 years when the landloard wants to reclaim the mini-house.

Sure.

Ever try to get rid fo a single mom tenant? Now call it homeless and it'll be a pure joy to do, I am sure.

Riiiiight.

A perfectly Portland solution.

I thought the big sales pitch for tiny houses was low cost of a few hundred bucks at the most. How the fahq do you justify $75K a piece?

Who are the scum-sucking democrap sons of whores that are getting rich off this?

Aww, c'mon,....little houses, fulla' little homeless dwarves, happy now washing their little windows, and sweeping their little floors with their little brooms, while littlew pots of tea simmer on the little stoves....what could be cuter and more fetching ?
....particularly after a toke or three.

laugh ROFL, good mind picture there.
For half that price, they could buy perfectly livable RVs if that's what they want to do. Park them at a city-owned "KOA" lot with hookups.

That is, if you agree that the goobermint ought to take care of everybody's every need. Which is the definition of socialism.

I swear...you gotta be high as a kite to come up with a stupid idea like that.

Yea I think about $25,000 of each $75,000 goes directly to graft/corruption/la mordida as the case may be.
We were just talking about this at work. Decided we want that $75K shed contract. We'd even discount it down to $65K if they bought 10 or more at a time.

Outside of Multnomah county it's a joke (Hell probably inside it too), but it's just another example of the idiot children they've repeated elected there. Needles and piles of shidt all over the back yard. Sure. Sign me up.
If they're anchored to the ground, all the permit and inspection rules kick in. They actually do cost that much if you follow the laws. Most of them are built on trailer frames just for that reason.
Just a thought, to ice fishing huts run 75K?

Ha! Are you kidding. They have permanent homeless camps (squatter camps) all over Portland and there isn't one building code enforced.

You fail to grasp the alternate reality that is Portlandia.
Here's some examples of the squatter shack's the county is proposing.

Think you could get occupancy permits in any other part of the country?

What the hell is their definition of a tiny home? 1000 sq foot?
I'm guessing property taxes will increase too. After all, you just added a $75K Keebler elf hut on your property.

Instead of being called a think tank it's called a toke tank.
What a lovely 75,000.00 home...cripes, they must have some potent drugs up there...my experience with the homeless, is they will take you for all they can, then say eff you, when the handouts stop. Kinda doubt the homeowner would actually be able to get rid of them.
Liberals have got to be the biggest dumbasses on this earth.
Hey, I say no problem! And I'm certain the wealthy Liberals living in the exclusive part of town will be the first to step right up providing leadership through example.

If they are paying 75K for tbose pieces of scitt, I want in on tne bidding.

There are tens of thousands of 8'x20' containers scattered across this country which could be turned info damned functional cabins for a song, and stacked/moved like cordwood until need arises.

Yeah, like the commissioners and Portland city counsel. Sure they're lining up to get these things in their Laurelhurst and Mt. Tabor yards.

Not so fast. Scroll up. Me and my buddies at work have first dibs and we're willing to do it at a loss for the low low price of $65K.

Actually it was rumored to be inspired when one of the executives was high and reading Snow White and the 7 Dwarfs over the weekend to his other Gay Partner...

and the idea just "came to him" on Monday morning meeting...

Most are 500 or smaller, sometimes a lot smaller.
These are supposed to be around 200sqft. Looks like some are a lot smaller.

Wonder if the tenants would complain about the smell off the lawnmower stored in there with them. Probably not over the smell of human waste just out the door.
Just doing a quick tax calculator game. If you own a 200K house in Portland, add a $75K tiny home, you're property taxes will increase about $1K a year.

So are the homeowners now paying the $1K a year in added property tax?

What a deal

What the county is paying for it. Not what it's worth. Besides the homeowner doesn't own it for five years.

Assuming that the squatters don't abandon it after trashing it in 4 years and the county charges the homeowner for removal of a rat infested nuisance structure, who says it will be worth more than bonfire material when it goes to the homowner.

notice the circle jerk going on in the background?
if there is 7500 in materials in that A frame i will vote Democrap.
The .gov still owns thousands of Katrina trailers scattered all over the country sitting there rotting away. Now, it's 75K "tiny houses" . Is EVERYONE in Portland totally stoned out their minds?.

Do those things have crappers in them or do you just go behind a bush somewhere?

No fense to our Orygun members, but,WTF are they thinking out there??
75K for those, and to put a family in there with kids.
I would find it hard to build that for 10k.
Don't say those fuggers can't get any stupider, they take it as a challenge.

Don't even need a bush, for many cultures of the world.
Most of our OR members live outside Portland. This is a city thing, courtesy of CA imports.

$200k home in Portland? Phucqk, that'd be like two, maybe three of these sheds connected with blue tarps!

Some views around the city. Anywhere there's some ground within easy walk of free chit... It goes way beyond most folk's imagination and pre-dates 'legal' pot by far. It ain't immigrants either, white trash, meth heads, their spawn, and most folks are living it by choice. They'd like something better, but not at the cost of having to labor. Those folks below have the Portland look down pat.

What's it like 10,000 more moving in every year than moving out?

Oregon going to hell.
Ahhh Portland.........
Where young people go to retire.

Fuggit, it's their city. Let them have at it. Hope it works out for somebody.

I not sure the gov't owns those trailers any longer. I bought one in Hope Arkansas , then they started selling by the 10's, then by the hundreds just to get rid of them. I see them all the time, but they are privately owned now.
You don't need a chitter. Just use your host family's can, may as well, it's a village..... What better way to teach your children about the Democrat way then to open your home to freeloaders, share your chitter, share the crabs, the lice, the TB. They'll share the finer points of panhandling, thieving, alternative dress and victim playing. Gawd I miss Portland!
In most areas a small building can be up to 200 square feet and not be taxed , if it were on raw land the land would still be considered unimproved land and taxed accordingly . But the building can't be a permanent structure i.e. built on a foundation -basement etc. .
A concrete pad can be poured and the building anchored to it by local code - like 2x4 or 2x6 floor joist sitting in the concrete pad . So anything with brick exterior walls etc. wouldn't be legal . It would no longer be considered a portable structure , what a portable structure is or isn't can have varying definitions .
Some areas only allow 150 sq. ft. others 250 s.f. .
I think that it's a great idea for those that are willing to put their words into action. It's fine with me if liberals actually start shouldering some of the responsibility for the outcome of their policies. In fact all registered democrats, communist and Green Party members should be required to house and pay for the homeless.

Yep. Im sure there is federal grant money being used somewhere in this endeavor, but by and large it is there issue and it seems neighbors are stepping up, which is the way it should be.

The idea of small "tiny" homes being used for homeless is actually not a bad idea. The issue comes with the crime that permeates these camps. Damned if I'd want one in my back yard.

KC Missurah has a similar program for homeless, but it utilizes empty lots to erect a whole "tiny town" instead of locals backyards.

I'm not sure there are too many bare lots in Portland for $200k, much less one with a shock and a tarp!

Portland real estate has blown the fugg up over the last 6-8 years.
no matter how much money a City throws at the homeless problem, the problem never goes away.
Here in my fair City, we have what is euphemistically called "Dignity Village". The local tax payers ponied up a couple of million bucks to buy a no longer used State minimum security prison at the edge of town.
The homeless won't stay in the buildings, because it's a former prison and they feel stigmatized. Seriously.
So they let the homeless put up a tent city on the grounds. Nothing but crime, rape, theft, and murder there. That is what they call 'Dignity City', no one being able to see the irony of it all.
Now it's too far out for the homeless to like being there, so we spend another quarter of a million bucks each year, for FREE BUS SERVICE to and from there to down town, where they like to hang out. Our multi million dollar state of the art library is the preferred spot. Free internet (porn), AC, bathrooms and what not.
When it gets cold, the City also opens shelters, and provides free motel rooms.
For reasons like this, we can't get rid of the homeless.
Seattle may be worse than Portland when it comes to homeless. Hell, they're opening safe spots to help them shoot herion out here.

Some folks need help, some just need to be forgotten.
Look at the bright side. The loons are concentrating on both coasts. When the meltdown comes, we won't have to weed them out of flyover country ..... just keep them on the coasts. After the first winter 70% will be dead and the rest will kill one another. Then that country can be repopulated with conservative European Christians fleeing Muslim Europe.
