The permit has a couple of extra restrictions, but 18 year olds can now get concealed carry permits in Utah. The Governor signed the bill yesterday.
That ought to get a few kids killed...

Phil
Thats good, just hope is doesn't hurt reciprocity.
Turning 18 has gotten a LOT of kids killed -
in WWII, Korea, Viet Nam, Yugoslavia, Iraq, Afghanistan, etc. etc.

They were NOT carrying concealed, either.
Ain't happy to hear it.

There's a reason the drinking age was raised to 21.

JMHO
And the liberals come out of the woodwork
So now.

I, as an 18 yr old, can carry but not (legally) drink a beer, for another three years in this state?
Got mine when I was 19 years old in NY. Changed to 21 now.

Good, if you're old enough to die fighting for this country you're damn well old enough to carry a gun and have cold beer too!

If they're good enough to die for their country they're good enough to do anything else. Either that or don't draft them till they're 21.
Super cool picture, could you share some the history? I have seen it many times but never looked that closely until now. There was a lot of firepower right there.

Or let them vote.
Move it all to 21 or all to 18.

You're either legally an adult or not. I'd vote for 21 personally.
Any citizen of this country regardless of age should be able to own and carry a weapon without and type of permit or permission from the government or state period.

I had a concealed carry permit at 19 in the state of New York, but Federal law wouldn't allow me to purchase a handgun. I could receive one as a gift, though, so a cop bought me one and gave it to me as a gift. At the same time I gave him a gift in the amount of the handgun's price.

It was only suspended. The draft laws are all in place, and can be reactivated at any time.

You might have missed that although the draft may have ended, registration for it is still a requirement and the feral govt will still hold your life and future hostage if you don't.

i started packing around a revover, rifle, shotgun somewhere around the age of 11. course i was raised a long time ago in arizona.
the rat pack i ran with we all had motor scooters. and ran all over the county chasing dove, rabbits, etc.
no body thought anything of it.
I think i was around 11 when i purchased my first shotgun.
nobody got shot either.

Didn't know that....I turned 18 before they ended/suspended it.

Knee jerk reaction was NO. but I was 18 when I volunteered for Vietnam and kids are dieing for me in the sandbox. So YES!

Absolutely.
I concur with this decision. Especially if one is required to register for selective service at 18, old enough to vote, etc, they should have their constitutional rights as well.

There's a reason alright, lots of kids being raised by pussies and school teachers.

One is either legally an adult, or they are not, period. I don't give a flying puck what age 'they' pick, but when one is an adult they should get all the 'perks' that go along with it.

If one isn't responsible enough at 18, they ain't gonna be at 21 either.

If you ever go to the post office, take a look. You'll see registration forms there.
TN is 18 for active military and honorably discharged veterans.
Whatever the age is, it should be nationwide as to not screw up reciprocity.
18 year olds in Wyoming don't need a permit to carry concealed. But as far as ages go, dirty movies, drinking, smoking, drafting, leaving home, getting married, voting, etc, pick one damn age and let 'em loose. Old enough to join the army old enough to have a beer, If you're adult enough to vote, your old enough to carry. But as as far as concealed goes none of you should need a stinking permit.

Yeah, it was because a bunch of prohibitionist ninnies called MADD basically took over our government & there wasn't anyone with enough balls to stand up to them and demand the right thing be done.

We're pretty much the only country in the civilized world that makes an adult wait until 21 to legally drink alcohol. We're also the one with the most problems with alcohol, which the 21 year old drinking age directly contributes to. Prohibit something and you'll make it more desirable.
I remember talking to a girl in college and she said it was easier for her to get cocaine/meth, whatever, than it was to buy beer.

I totally get being old enough to go get shot for your country , you should be able to buy any drink you want and any gun you want. but to be able to buy a first pistol and pack it. and a first drink all same day may not be the best scenario. Dumbass goes and get hurt or dead well they did it to theirself but if the injury or kill an inoccent person than what?

Outlaw ALL guns and all alcohol, that's the only sane answer.

We have to stop legislating to the lowest common denominator

There ain't no age limit on dumbass, the vast majority of them will have it their whole life.
I started shooting my dads colt Python at age 10. He showed us where he kept it, how to load it, and how to shoot it. We lived 10 miles from town so he wanted us to know what to do if someone tried to break into the house.

I bought a ruger mark I from a co-worker at age 15. I often had it in the trunk of my car but didn't carry it concealed on me. My parents were fine with it because they knew I knew how to use it and that I was responsible. I think it should be a parents decision under 18 because they should know their kids and if the government says they're an adult at 18 they should have the rights of an adult.

When my kids are teenagers if they want to go on a hike or camp out I'll probably make sure they take a gun unless I can't trust them. If they are responsible and level headed I'll give them the same opportunity to handle a bad situation that my dad gave me. It probably won't be a colt Python but maybe moms sp101.

I almost wish my daughter could carry a gun when she turns 12 given they way the culture is going. Some kids can be trusted more than many adults. Remember when our high school parking lots were full of trucks with gun racks in the window with a shotgun and 22 in it? We always got in fights too but no one ever pulled a gun. After Christmas everyone would go out to the school parking lot at lunch and show each other the guns we got for Christmas.

'Twas a different era, and, I think, a better one.

Daytime driver licenses at 14, nobody worried about the pickups in the parking lot ready to head out for hunting camp on Friday afternoon before opening day, and three teenagers with rifles over their shoulders, headed for a spot outside town to perforate tin cans were looked on as good kids spending time developing a worthwhile skill.

Oh, you guys must be Liberals coming out of the woodwork.

As pointed out, ya still gotta register at least for selective service at age 18.

IIRC in the distant (to me) past, one of the arguments for keeping the age 18 selective service/potential draft thing at age 18 was that by 21 too many people had too many things going on in their lives like careers and family, that was an argument anyhow.

Which of course implies that people are different at age 21.

At least raising the voting age to 21 would knock a percentage point or two off of the Democrat vote, so I could get behind that too.

IIRC the reason was that drunk driving fatalities were the #1 cause of death for the under-21 demographic. There was a common perception that losing a handful of the senior class that way was part of the collective experience of every high school in America. It was for mine.

Since that time, following the raising of the drinking age, this fatality rate has declined by about one-third whereas it has remained relatively constant (and still is lower than for under 21's) for the over 21 crowd.

While there's always lies, damned lies, and statistics, ain't too hard to construe those figures into an argument, backed by data, for keeping the legal drinking age at 21, especially as there's so little upside to getting drunk.

Now I expect that's gonna send you into a tizzy on account of ya might not have enough to do every day, so go back and google up my posts for the last forty years like ya done fer other folks.

All that aside, your premise is that we are the same at 21 as we are at 18, which if you had been around a bunch of 18 year olds and seen 'em again at age 21 you would know is patently false.

At this point you're gonna point to the Coast Guard, to which I would answer the pool of 18 year-olds who can even get into the Coast Guard, let alone have the inclination to go into the Military, hardly represents the 18yo population as a whole.

If Tennessee allows 18yo Military folks to carry concealed, I have no problem with that.

Sorta on topic, its been my experience that if a girl was hot at 18, that same woman is off-the-scale hot at 21, but that's nine years of college talking wink

OTOH I can think of a bunch of 17 year-olds that I've known where getting them into the Marines woulda been the best thing we coulda done for 'em. Not all gang members are worthless pu$$ies, around here teenage gang membership is as much or more about machismo as it is about profit.

By the time they hit their twenties a more'n a few of these guys are getting their heads straight, except they have teenage felonies following them around through life.

Tell ya what; if this Utah 18yo carry thing has no demonstrable effect on anything, then I'll be all for it.

I suspect the drunk driving fatalites were pretty low during prohibition also.

Your argument for keeping the drinking age at 21 is the same one that is made by every oppressive government in history for infringements upon freedom, to protect the people from themselves. When you use that blanket statement you can justify anything. It's the same one that Kim Jong Un uses to keep his people enslaved, it's the same argument the democrats would use to take away your guns.

The argument for not having a 21 year old drinking age is much more simple, it's that a free adult should to be able to decide if he or she wants to have a drink. It's called liberty and while it's certainly not in vogue nowadays some of us still think it's important.

I think in this case the logic went they was protecting everybody else from the injuries and fatalities inflicted by drunk teenagers behind the wheel. Statistics (them again) bear that out.
Here in Idaho 18 year olds have been able to carry guns concealed without a permit outside city limits for as long as I can remember. Can for years now inside city limits with a CCW permit at 18.
So far the only shootings seem to be over drugs, or gang related, in other words nothing has changed with any new gun law.

Excellent odds things will be exactly the same in Utah.

It;s the people not the guns, some seem to never figure that out.
As soon as my youngest turns 18 he and I will be headed to the gun store to purchase his.

Sorry

I'd say it's a bit of a shame that their "teenage felonies" aren't followed by their immediate DEATH, and would as soon hang them as council them.

Today's "Youth" gangs are NOT Little Rascals, or Our Gang comedy shows.

Depends on the felony, depends on the kid.

A kid in a bad neighborhood can get upside the law with the best of intentions.

One guy who comes to mind was a foster kid who was outraged when someone did a drive-by on his cousin's house when their infant daughter was in it. Now this foster kid was a scrawny little guy, but knowing where the perp lived he took a baseball bat, walked a couple of miles to that residence, and laid the fugger out in broad daylight in his own driveway. The Cops picked him up on his walk home. (The kid resisted arrest, and was being roughly handled as a result, to hear him tell it he kept trying to throw himself in front of the Cop car camera to get it on tape grin). I'm pretty sure that guy must be incarcerated somewhere for something by now. I will say this, if ya ever had did anything decent for that kid he remembered it and woulda watched your back in a tight spot 100%

Another was a former student several years back who, wearing a ski mask, came on campus with a tire iron and laid some punk out right there in the parking lot, immediately thereafter successfully fleeing the scene. The reason was said punk had the previous weekend raped his younger sister at a party, both the tire iron guy and the sister were decent kids. He got away with it, nobody seems to have looked real hard.
