...or at least I felt like it. I frequent a couple of local shops for fishing tackle. A $350 rod and reel normal sells in these shops for $50-$70, so it would be silly for me not to. I don't buy a lot of guns anymore, but you still gotta glance at the rack. Hey...that looks like a Win 9422 with that $450 tag. Good shape...9422M. What's the best you can do? That's it. Same here. The beauty of Easy Pawn I guess. Being a nation wide chain they don't always get their pricing right.
Nice.

That one was junk; probably not worth more than scrap metal prices.

Easy Pawn is one of those national chains where everything is priced wrong...just most of the time, it's way too high. I've had real good luck there with guitars. It's obvious that some kid just looks up "Stratocaster" and tags it. It doesn't matter if it was made in Korea yesterday or SRV's #1. Hell, the #1 would probably be cheaper...it's got stickers on it.
I robbed a pawn shop like that a couple times but didn't get away with as much cash.

Pulled a FLAIG'S Custom Mauser (FN Belgium action) with a vintage Leupold M8 scope for $500 OTD if memory serves. Had a bull barrel and one hell of a maple figured thumbhole stock.

And a Ruger MkII Ultralight in .257 Bob (forget what scope but was halfway decent) for $475 OTD.

I'm not as good as you at this stealing, Pat.

I meant in terms of the actual value to price tag disparity. And no, they don't last long. Pawn shops that mess up prices like that tend to have regulars who come in several times a week looking for deals like you got. Never pass a run down pawn shop. Any of the nice ones usually seem to know what they got, at least around here.
Yeah once in awhile you can find a good deal around here. Not a 9422 for $450 but about a month and a half ago I picked up a Winchester 88 in .308 for $270 out the door. It'll be a good brush gun for the cabins up north.
That wasn't at a certain pawn shop in Bellevue, was it?
No it was in Everett.

Guys that run my local pawns know their guns/scopes. Jerks! smile

But they have a flat policy never to pay more than $100 for a gun. Don't know about scopes, but I recon they'd thry to get the scope- any scope- included.

Only one I know of that broke their rule was a pre '64 70 ultralight - cherry almost- that Norm bought for $200 for himself....

I flat out bought a Python for $175 one time. Still have it.

Dayom. I bought one like new 30 yrs ago for about $225. Its had a lot of use including turkey and coyote. Have a 4x leupold on it.

I just checked and saw what they are now going for. Never would have guessed it.

Funny isn't it? When the store buys something for less than its value, they get called thieves and robbers. When somebody buys that very same thing at a bargain from the store, he's a lucky guy.

You should atone for your sins by offering the stolen item (Winchester 9422M) to those on the fire. smile
Posted By: RockyRaab Re: Robbed a Pawn Shop Today - 03/30/17
I hear ya, Fireball.

I used to work in a pawn shop, and the spectrum of what people want for items was astounding. On the one hand, lots of folks wanted to sell or pawn used (sometimes well used) items for full retail - or even full MSRP value.

But then there were people who brought in very nice things and only wanted a small amount. Sometimes to make it easier to redeem the item if pawning it, and sometimes quite possibly out of ignorance.

I distinctly recall one man who wanted to sell three guns for $200. In his words, "Two nice ones and one old one." The two nice ones were a Mossberg pump shotgun and a Marlin 60 .22 rifle. The old one turned out to be a Winchester 94, octagon barrel rifle (not carbine) in .32-40. With a serial number from the first MONTH of M94 production.

The boss nodded and handed him the $200.

Did we steal that rifle? Nope. That was the price the man asked for it. If he had asked what it was worth first, he'd have gotten several thousand dollars. But he didn't.

(The rifle went into the Boss's Winchester collection. It'll never be sold.)
I'm glad I didn't ever work in a pawn shop. I don't think I could look at myself in a mirror again after a screwing like that guy got.
Don't feel too bad, the pawn shop doubled their money also.........

Ya my steel was a 3006 Weatherby Souryeropa (or how ever you spell it) action. The stock had a 14K gold inlay with the original owners initials engraved in it with a detachable Supra scope that was going for $1000 on the net at the time and an extra Lasermark stock with the rifle and a Weatherby case all for $1000

It was listed in an online used gun listing from my favorite gun store Corporation and I had it shipped to my favorite store.

When the manager opened the case he [bleep] a brick and told me if I did not want it he would take it. All the other salesman jumped in and I almost started an argument in the shop when I told them write it up it's mine. You guy's need to check your own listings from other stores some times.

So I purchased a scope and got the rifle and extra stock for free.
I nailed a bargain yesterday at a local pawn shop also.

Those were some of the worst years for me, Bayou. But for the opposite reason you give. Seeing the lowest end of the gene pool try to screw the store over day after day sickened me. Trust me, in a pawn shop the scum comes in the front door, not the employee entrance.

Sorting that stuff out - the scum who try to screw someone - is part of the job in any customer related business. Knowingly taking advantage of an unwary store owner or an unwary customer is scummy behavior no matter which door is opened.
Posted By: RockyRaab Re: Robbed a Pawn Shop Today - 03/30/17
So you're condemning the OP and all the others who got bargains at pawn shops?

LOL..!! Now you're trying to extrapolate to something I never said.

I'm talking about the exchange between the store and the customer walking in the door with either of them trying to get something for nothing. Either way its scummy. I'm not talking about who buys what at a bargain price after its on the shelf in the pawn shop.

Without your comment about the unknowing guy wanting $200 for something knowingly worth far more by the store owner, we wouldn't even be talking right now. In my earlier years I had to pawn items a few times to eat, but I only pawned something when I knew we were both in sync on value. What the owner did with it afterwards was not my business in terms of what he sold it for. It was no longer mine at that point.

What your boss did is the same as what the scum customers you disliked so much were trying to do to you. Neither is above board.
Posted By: RockyRaab Re: Robbed a Pawn Shop Today - 03/30/17
No, it's exactly about it. The exchange is the same both ways. There's an asked-for price, and the agreed upon purchase.

You cannot argue that the store is scummy when it pays what the customer asks, and yet praise the customer who pays what the store asks. BOTH sides get exactly what they sought, at a price both were happy with.

It would be entirely different if either side OFFERS a price far below value, knowing the seller is ignorant about the true value. But that's not what happened to either LtPowell, or our customer.

ltpowell and his snag aren't even on my radar.

As to what is ethical and above board on both sides of the fence when conducting business over the counter, we'll just have to agree to disagree, I guess.

I know it's been said many times but YOU SUCK!
Posted By: RockyRaab Re: Robbed a Pawn Shop Today - 03/30/17
We can disagree in friendship.

I see a clear distinction between when the buyer or the seller offer a price. Perhaps you don't. Maybe you think LtPowell should have said "This rifle is worth more. I won't give you less than $1000 for it." I don't think that.

I'll leave it there.
I have no problem at all with the deal ltpowell got. Between us only you want to make it an issue. It's not for me.

I'm simply saying that a pawn owner like you described wouldn't get any of my business if I knew he dealt with others like you described.

I never found a bargain in a pawn shop. I quit going after a while. miles
Posted By: RockyRaab Re: Robbed a Pawn Shop Today - 03/30/17
I'm not sure how I got misunderstood, but I have no trouble with the deal LtPowell got.

What I'm saying is that it's exactly the same with the deal my boss got. The seller set the price and the buyer agreed.

You seem to draw a distinction between when a store gets a bargain and when a customer gets one. I think there is none.

Has this gotten a bit out of control?
Great snag, Pat!

My best pawn shop robbery was a 1969 vintage Mountie in excellent condition with a Williams peep sight and an original Marlin leather sling plus two El Paso Weaver fixed power scopes (one 4x, one 6x) in excellent condition for $350.00 OTD.

I wasn't saying you maybe had a problem with ltpowell's deal. You simply kept dragging his deal out and asking me if I had a problem with it. I stated several times that I did not, and that the topic of ltpowell's good deal had nothing to do with my comment concerning your pawn shop experience with your boss.

As I stated maybe 4 hours ago, let's just agree to disagree.

His deal was only the most logical example to use. We could have used any other of the good deals mentioned, but LtP started the thread.

If we continue, I'll just use "seller" and "buyer" for my points. If we don't, may you have a great evening.
Congratulations on your deal. Sounds like you did alright.
