I need another kids gun for my granddaughters. I’ve raised five hunters, three boys and twin girls on a Rossi 243, H&R 243 single shot rifles. The H&R has been the better of the two but I’m done with both of them. The Rossi is horrible and it’s a wonder they killed anything at all with it.
I’m interested in the Henry 243 and was wondering if anyone owns one an knows how they shoot. I did notice they have a 1:10 twist which concerns me a little because I prefer a 1:8 twist when shooting 100g bullets.

i got a buddy that has one in 308 and seems to like it just fine.

Looking at the prices , was wondering for the money why not go with an economical bolt gun , Rugers and Savages can be had fo the same price , even cheaper when rebates are offered .
They produce great hunting accuracy , my nephew has two Ruger Americans , one in 243 the other in 6.5 creedmore , they both are shooters , matter of fact he took a doe yesterday at almost 200 yds with the 6.5 .

My brother just bought a new one of these. He has had probably 100 rifles and says this has the worst trigger he’s ever seen. There was a thread on this forum on this rifle and everyone said the same thing. Hope this gives you a heads up. Ed k

1-10 should spin just about any 100gr bullet just fine, like it's been doing for 60+ years, mono-metals excepted. They make a youth model with a 13" lop stock. They certainly look better than either of the others you have. Accuracy is a crapshoot, as always.

I'd look at the RARs too.

I definitely want a single shot due to the weight and simplicity. Our kids started shooting deer around age 8, 9 and I now have four granddaughters ready to hunt.

I’m guessing the trigger can be honed a bit. I had to hone a single shot Savage years ago and it worked out well.

Apparently the heavy trigger is due to the way the springs are set up to prevent the rifle from drop firing. It's not hard to replace the spring although you do have to remove the buttstock.

If you google around I've found some other threads but they basically say the same thing, and one guy even had some of those replacement springs for sale since you can only get them from the manufacturer in packs of 10 or so.

And - this is just hearsay so far based on some random posts in various forums but apparently Henry has tried to fix the problem and the newer single shots are coming out with triggers more in the 4.5 - 5 pound range. Not spectacular but better than the 9+ pound triggers folks have complained about.

Thanks Jim. I’ll check out the thread you referenced. I just emailed Henry about the accuracy and the poor trigger. I do believe Henry wants to build quality rifles so let’s see what they come up with.

Thank you for your interest and consideration. We like to think that ours is better than most entry level single shots in terms of accuracy, fit and finish. It is true that they have heavy triggers mainly due to their rebounding hammer safety.
