My son will be turning 21 years of age this spring, and his birthday coincides with his spring break from school. He has been dabbling with playing guitar for years, enjoys attending concerts, and is even interested in getting involved in the production side of music after graduation.

I've been thinking it would be a good idea to plan a quick getaway and take him somewhere "cool" to celebrate his birthday that incorporates good, live music. One obvious choice is Nashville, but we're not really country music fans, especially much of what passes as country music today. Memphis might be a better option, but I've heard that the city itself is turning into a dump. Chicago supposedly has a good blues scene, but it's Chicago. We often watch Austin City Limits on PBS, but I hear that tickets for ACL are given out only through a lottery system.

Anyone have any ideas along these lines?

My wife and teenage daughter will probably be coming along too, and they might have to entertain themselves for a few nights, so any thoughts about what they might want to see and do in a particular city are welcome.

Thank you.
Go to Austin.
Nashville is great, but rock/blues it aint.

Memphis is a kinda, sorta, not really for me.

I'd tell him what you had in mind and let him tell you what/where.

I bet he has better ideas about where he'd like to take you guys than us old farts.

I disagree. Not a lot to see. Maybe the Continental Club. And SRV’s Statue in the Park. And a bunch of freaks on 6th street.
Buddy Guy's bar in Chicago, safe area of town, great shows. Daughter gave me tickets/trip there for x-mas a couple years ago. Saw Buddy in concert there, awesome experience.
I'm not all that big of a music fan, but if you want blues and bluesie rock, ya gotta go to Mississippi. Tbere are two close to each other. I've been to the Grammy museum in Cleveland, ms. Even for me, it was realy cool.

The other is about a half hour away in Clarksdale, MS.

Not having been there, I have no report.

Good luck and enjoy the trip.
