I just checked out the corona virus tracker put out by Domo. https://www.domo.com/coronavirus-tracking Blaine County is now in the top 4 most infected counties That's total number of cases, not per-capita. On a per capita basis Blaine County would have to be off the charts. Any idea why so many sick people there?
Posted By: AH64guy Re: Blaine County ID - 03/29/20
Looks like a data error in the database, 502 cases per 100 would be tough to do.

Just re-read it - per 100K - got it.

But that's also the Sun Valley area - a lot of out of state tourists and real estate holders - that would potentially travel in spite of restrictions, and could afford to do so -JMHO.

Same as Summit county in Utah it’s a ski area. People with money flying in and out to second and third homes. There spreading this crap everywhere they go and don’t seem to care.

People traveling and going out unnecessarily.

Here is the calculation per 10K residents. Very ugly for Blaine County

County Population Infections Per 10k
NYC 8,398,748 1,889 2.2
Westchester County 967,612 814 8.4
Rockland County 325,695 582 17.9
Blaine County 21,376 504 235.8

Some Florida Campfire Members were talking about upper East Coast folks driving into Florida to ride it out, and not willing to quarantine.

I suspect they are getting the same type of travel.

A small community and destination of the very wealthy. Travelers from across the country/world.

Destination resort across all seasons. Were I rich enough, I'd likely be a regular visitor as well.

I’m sure there is a joke in there somewhere but the coincidences between the two counties are very similar. Summit County, Utah has 130 cases of Covid. Salt lake county has 292 cases of Covid. Summit County is 1/15th the size of SLC. Ski town. Same as Blaine county in Idaho with Sun Valley.

Summit County has finally told people to stay out and do not come to there second/ third homes. We shall see what happens.

look at ALL the top counties. ski areas = low population, high visitation. gives you a big number for cases/population

interesting website

It might be construed as a good thing so the virus 'washes over' us sooner.
Posted By: Sycamore Re: Blaine County ID - 03/29/20
it has to do with the travel around Christmas /New years. MLK holiday, Presidents day, lots of flying in and flying out, and community spread since then. those cases aren't from peope coming in this week. remember this stuff takes weeks to present, and some people don't get very sick from it, and expect to have a cough or fever for part of the winter.
Posted By: Rock Chuck Re: Blaine County ID - 03/29/20
Blaine county only has 22k people. It's CA light. There are a lot of rich people who travel regularly to CA and other liberal places. Since it's home to Sun Valley, they get a lot of wealthy tourists and party goers. The disease was brought in from out of state. As of Friday, they had 82 cases and 2 deaths. A big issue is that someone went to the ER in the local hospital and spread it to the doctors. 2 doctors were out with it and other workers have it too. On a per capita basis, that's more than NYC.
Posted By: Tarkio Re: Blaine County ID - 03/29/20
We are seeing that here.

Reports of people driving in from hot areas to "quarantine" while fishing on the Big Horn. Tribe got pissed off and full of it. They instituted a rule that if you have come in from over 100 miles, you MUST self-isolate wherever you are staying for 4 days and they specifically stated this doens't mean you can do this while fishing on the river.

People were not getting with the program so the tribe has started to stop people driving up the valley and stopping those that aren't locals and turning them around. Also shut down the shuttle services.

Does piss me off a bit that people are coming here from the east coast or southern California if they are carriers.

The virus is not wealth sensitive.

The wealthy do have an ability to leave infected areas and spread the virus far and wide across the nation and the world as they travel.

There is nothing political about that. That is just simple fact.

In a sense it is wealth sensitive. Those with lots of disposable income tend to travel more, particuarily to ski areas and if you notice three of the counties mentioned are home to ski areas. These same people are out among lots of other folks socalizing, then they eat out in crowded restaurants and spread the virus into the general population. IMO the counties are being smart in shutting down travel although it is a bit like closing the barn door after the horse is out.
We have one confirmed case in our county, I know the person and thank God I have not had any interaction with him, but a week or so before he came down with it he had been in Sun Valley sking. Now we are seeing folks from Sun Valley starting to come in our area to get away from Blaine county and the epidemic out there it will only be a matter of time before it starts hitting here.

If it wasn't for wealthy skiers and those with expensive 2d homes in the Sun Valley area, the virus likely wouldn't have reached Blaine county yet. The nearest town of any size is Twin Falls, about 80 miles away. I say 'wealthy' skiers because us average skiers can't afford Sun Valley. We go to much cheaper hills.

Got a call from a buddy who is in rental management business and all the vacation rentals are booked and instead of usual vacation goers that book a week at a time they are booking for months at a time.
Our vacation rental season doesn't start for at least two months.
Local paper also had an article, rich people fleeing the cities.
They will be at Cosco stocking up, 14 day quarantine is for the deplorables

Posted By: Rock Chuck Re: Blaine County ID - 03/30/20
One problem with Blaine county is that it's so expensive to live there that most of the working people live 50 to 80 miles away in Shoshone or the Twin Falls area. They have to commute every day. That can spread the bug. However, so far it hasn't happened. Shoshone is a very small town and has had only 1 case. Twin Falls county is about 85k and has only 2 known cases so far.

Well Sheit!

Maybe a daily cross burning at either end of Glacier's runway will keep'm on the plane.
Add a few zombies slumming around the waiting area for second tier effect and if that fails light up the parking area with tracers.

I've only flown once in my life and that was back in the early 90's. Haven't been to an airport since. I'm poor and poor people can't afford to fly dipshyt. We also can't afford second homes or hunting camps or vacations in far away places.

The case could be made that wealthy people are more healthy. They have the income for medical treatment and all the vaccines. The same argument could be made for their maid from Guatemala. She might have a stronger immune system because of conditions she was raised in. If we followed your logic we would ban the residents from their own homes.

I am not following your line of thinking, particuarily the part about "we would ban the residents from their own homes".

My position is they should follow the recommendations made by the CDC - self isolate at home. Self isolating at home means that you will have less of a chance to contact someone who has, but importantly it also means that if you have been in contact with someone who is a carrier you will not be out spreading it around. Doing this is not rocket science - leaving a county that has a high rate of infection and going to a county that has a low, or no rate, is irresponsible at best.

Poor people don't take cross country trips in anything. The trouble with you is, you're so far removed from poor and poor people you don't even know WTF it is or what they do or don't do. Here's a fuggin clue. Being from a rural area I know a lot of poor people. Most don't leave the County they live in on a regular basis unless they live in one County and work in the next. Interstate travel for most is a rarity.

Ok, what wealth level do you need to be at to afford a plane ticket? Do I have pull my poor credentials? I have no income. I'm retired, but I do have ten million frequent flier miles. Every person at an airport will have a different story. Claiming poor people don't travel is not realistic. Most of the poor people I see on planes have better cell phones than I have. Phones don't measure a person’s wealth either.

The latest from Blaine county...

The infection rate in NYC is 471 per 100k. As of this morning, Blaine county is 1594 per 100k. It's nearly highest rate in the world right now. They have 351 cases with a population of 23k. By contrast, Here in Twin Falls county, 80 miles away, we've had 31 cases for 85k people. The hospital up there has been closed and serious patients have been shipped to Twin Falls. The hospital has reopened on a very limited basis. It's a small place with only 2 ICU beds.
The bug has been slowly spreading through Idaho, about 650 cases so far for 1.7 million people, but with 50% of them in Blaine county.

This probably isn't related at all but my wife was saying that all the places in the US that have serious problems are strongly Democrat. Blaine County is by far the most liberal county in Idaho and strongly Democrat. I won't go so far as to say it's God's judgement because that's more than I know, but it does warrant a good look. Of course big cities are crowded and prone to epidemics so that part's expected. They just happen to also be hotbeds of liberalism.

The similarity between Blaine county and Summit county in Utah is very plain to see. Ski towns with lots of people coming and going. People with second and third homes coming and going from all over the country. Both areas getting hammered by Covid. It’s not a coincidence. A lot of people here got sick after the Sundance film festival. Some went in and got tested for Influenza but tested negative but were still sick. Some believe Covid has been here before. Hopefully it goes away sooner than later.

It's a beautiful area. We've been hunting there for years. It's steep and rugged but there are lots of elk. I've seen wolves but haven't got a shot at one yet. There are great hiking & biking trails there and almost all are closed to motorized vehicles.
