Birdy finger on my right hand past week non stop. Up throughout the night to piss and what not and have to pop it straight . Mornings are the worst. Have to literally straighten it out and pop it straight and aches all day. Just taped a couple of tongue depressors (paint sticks) on it to keep it straight tonight. What the hell is it? Arthritis? Tendonitis? Locks up like its got a mind of it's own.

My whole left hand can "lock" up at times, mostly starting at the thumb and progressing to the rest of the hand if I don't grab the thumb and straighten it. Was taught that by my PT guy. It's especially bad while driving and holding the wheel with that hand.

Two outside fingers on that hand have issues too, but that needs to be looked at by neurologist my PA told me.

It's called "trigger finger"- - - - -and no, it doesn't matter which one is locking up. The tendons that flex the finger wear on the "pulley" they pivot on, and the tendon hangs up. The only fix is a surgical release that basically cuts away the problem pivot point and leaves you with limited flexion and a little less grip strength. of the finger involved. My father had that surgery on both hands, and griped about not being able to pull wrenches like he had done for the past 70 years. He just bought longer-handled tools and kept on working up to almost age 90.

Mostly during driving is when it's the worst. Has happened at other times.

Was there injury to that hand? Well, when we were kids and fingers got hurt, the popsicle sticks and electrical tape came out. So no broken fingers diagnosed officially. Arthritis has been diagnosed, as in the nurse's message on my machine for the base of my thumbs was 'Moderate to severe arthritis from use, use, use". I handled a lot of bakery pans in my twenties, as in one very 3 seconds or so for 8, 10, 12, fifteen hour shifts at times, with breaks and lunch of course. Not to mention other work related damage.

When it comes on it isn't particularly gradual. If my hand is curled around the steering wheel, that's where it wants to stay.

Pain in my hands at nights has been normal for a few years now. Enough to wake me, although it's not always from contracture, Many times it's just arthritis aching.

The joys of getting old.

Might be worth a video visit to your doc if that's what they're doing in your area........or go in if it's bothering you enough.

If it’s straightening out In the morning there’s a good chance it’s trigger finger. I’d double check Dupuytrens contracture. If it has just started it’s worth seeing a doc. In its initial stages it can be treated to reduce inflammation before it worsens. It’s worth the effort to get on top of now before it gets to the point of needing surgery.

I have this in my right hand. But so far no locking. And it doesn’t seem to hinder any activities.

15 minute surgery, two week rehab and you’re good to go.

Do you have diabetes? A friend of mine who has diabetes (from Agent Orange) and has to wear an insulin pump has this problem mostly when he drives. He drives as much as possible with one hand so the can pry his fingers off the steering wheel with the other hand.

Had it.. called trigger finger. An injection in the joint took care of it.

I have had Dupuytren’s disease and trigger finger in both hands at times. As mentioned above with trigger fingers, the tendons can get inflamed and swell and then the swollen part can’t get through the pulleys that keep the tendons close to the bones. It’s sort of like having a knot in a fishing line that might get hung up on the eyes of the rod. I have two fingers that are doing it now on my left hand.

A good hand specialist will probably give you a steroid injection into the tendon sheath as a first treatment and if that doesn’t work he will move on to surgical release, a very simple procedure where he will clip the pulley, solving the problem. I’ve had three done. BTW, those steroid injections smart a bit even with lidocaine injected beforehand.

With Dupuytren’s, it’s the palmar ligaments just below the skin that start to contract, gradually pulling the fingers toward the palm. Different mechanism vs. trigger finger. I’ve been dealing with both for about ten years in both hands. Having one of the conditions doesn’t mean that you’ll have the other... some do, some don’t.

I haven’t had that yet.

Nope, I tend the other way, towards hypoglycemia.

Are you by chance on a statin drug. I had “trigger finger” as a side effect from simvistatin(Zocor). Symptoms disappeared completely a few weeks after I stopped taking it.

By chance are on any type statin medication?

Have this as well. cannot flatten left hand due to ring finger being pulled.
Also have it in the arches of feet.

In the feet, the cysts along the ligaments and their contraction of are called Ledderhose disease
