Yea, but nickle-dime here and there doesn't set the watchdog off quite as bad.

There's no such thing as a VZ 24/47. It's either a VZ 24 or it's a model 24/47. The VZ 24 is a Czech made full length action. The 24/47 is either an FN or Yugoslav made Intermediate length action. Both are large ring.

What do you want to build?

The ad says "Yugoslavian M24/47 8mm Mauser". I was thinking of screwing a $100 A&B 260 Rem barrel from Midway on it.

Tekni has it right. The VZ is full length and the 24/47 is intermediate. The intermediates are about 1/8 inch too short to handle an 06 length cartridge. I'm just finishing a 24/47 switch to a 240 Weatherby. At $100.00 for the original action, 250.00 for the barrel, blueing, bolt bending and safety switch, 285.00 for a georgous stock, 170.00 for a trigger, 400.00 for a scope, and likely 40 hours of my time on the stock, I'd likely be ahead to just buy the Weatherby. Sure is fun though, and I'm going to do it again on a Swed Mauser. 1Minute

Some are excellent shooters, as is. I have 2 that are 1.5" rifles after a little tinkering. $99.00 is a decent price, now. A few years ago I could find good examples for $69-$89.

That cartridge would work fine in a 24/47. But the rifle uses what is known as a safety breeching system. That makes it more complicated to re-barrel. There is an extractor cut in the side of the shank that has to be made after the barrel is headspaced. This means the barrel has to be removed again, the cut made, then reinstalled.

Other than that they are usually pretty slick actions, but not ALL 98 parts will work on this action.

This could potentially be more $$$ than you had in mind.

OK, guys, I'm convinced. I have a couple of
GEW actions around here. I will screw a 6.5-06 barrel on one of them and save a buck or two and have basiclly the same thing for less $.

For what it's worth, the 24/47 is a pretty well-made Mauser action. If it is in good shape, it could be the basis of a nice rifle. The safety breech is a complication, but certainly not a serious one. It just takes a bit more time to do.

Depending on the rifle's shape, it could be a real find. I'd buy 2 or 3 and jjust shoot it with military ammo for fun.

My buddy the local store manager let me sort through the stack for an hour or so until I found the nicest one of the bunch. Bought it for $95 and tossed everything but the naked action.

You do not have to cut the grove for the safty breach on all of them. I have re-barreled 4 Yugo's. 1-48, 1-48A, and 2-24/47's. None of mine had to have the cut made. All you have to do is thin the extracor a little on the front. This will work on some of them, but not all.
