I'm hoping someone might be able to help me, I have a PF M70 in 225 winchester that has a hard time extracting loads every time, no problems on the second or third attempt. The original extractor has a chip out of the corner, which is causing the problem.
My gunsmith tried a 308 head size extractor, but it was worse.
Can anyone tell me if there was ever a difference between a 225 extractor and a 308 head size extractor, I realise they both measure the same diameter, but I'm thinking the rimmed vs. rimless might have made them different.

And the big question is if there is a difference, where would I find a 225 extractor.

Regards,
David

I've never had a .225 but going by the diagram of the .225 in a reloading book the .308 extractor should work.. Has the smith examined the chamber to see if there's fouling/rust/whatever in there that can impede extraction?

If the chamber's clean and polished, has the smith taken a good look at the extractor plunger and spring to see if they're in good condition? Damage to either will cause problems..

I bet the problem is in the chamber, and the chip on the extractor is a symptom/result, not the cause.

My thoughts also..

Thanks for the reply so far, the rifle has a brand new Pac-Nor Supermatch barrel installed, fired about 70 rounds to date.
Cannot see any marks on the fired cases or under examination of the chamber. Loads are quite mild, no where near hot loads.

Did it have difficult extraction before the new barrel? If not, the problem is likely in the new chamber. If the problem does predate the barrel, then it is extractor function.

You really can't see the chamber well enough to spot a flaw when it is installed on the receiver.

If a chip had gotten stuck on the reamer, and a flaw cut into the chamber wall, brass would be flowing into it, and that would make the case hard to extract. The necks of the cases might be longer that the throat.

Start systematically looking for the cause--guessing won't get you there. And all us internet wizards can do is guess.

Not to mention that the aftermarket barrel's extractor slot may be out of spec on your barrel - my $0.02.

Push Feed model 70, no extractor slot.

Your extrctor is a sliding type on the locking lug.

Pull the bolt nd if you have a Hawk eye bore scope, check the chamber. I would look around to see if I could borrow and extractor from another .308Win rifle for a try.
