I want to find out how old it is. And were i can take it to be totally refinished.
Hey Boone

I believe its a wall hangar. I have a 583.1 there is a recall on them from sears. I sent mine in and got 168.00 US dollars. Take the bolt out and send it in to sears then hang it on the wall like I did. Sorry I know you didnt want to hear this but check out what i said. I bought mine at a backwoods auction for 12 US dollars. brought it home and went in the backyard put a shell in closed th bolt the it went off. Not good at all, thats when I got to checken. I figured that if I recieved 168 US and had a wall hanger I came out ahead
Is the 583 a slide action or semi-auto?

Hey Jerry

Your shotgun (J.C. Higgins 583.22) was made by High Standard (Model 10 bolt action).

Here's the link to the recall information:

I've sent in a dozen or so myself to sears. After 10 they may require a picture of the gun or other parts, at least thats what the lady told me.
As addendum:

I still have my late father's J.C. Higgins Model 583.15 in 20 gauge, I hated to relegate it to a wall hanger as it has great sentimental value.

I received a call from Sears today stating that the recall applied to the 12 gauge versions only.
