Im experimenting with a 700 30-06 i have had for a while. I got a kit from brownells to bed the stock. should i bed the action and float the barrel or bed the whole dang thing. my local smith says he beds the whole stock but he has been known to blow a little smoke also. any comments on what to or not to do would be appreciated.

I bed the action and the chamber area, float the barrel.Rick.

Here are two sources of info: www.6mmbr.com/pillarbedding.html and http://riflestocks.tripod.com/bedding.html I use kits and tools from www.scorehi.com/

You don't have to use pillars, but that's the way I do all my stocks now. Work slowly and carefully, it's worth the effort.

Bed from the rear tang of the action to 1" in front of the recoil lug. Make sure to put 2 layers of masking tape on the front, bottom and sides of the recoil lug but not on the back..

Good luck..

+1

Critical things to remember on your first bed:

use brake cleaner to degrease the action and screws

use brownell's accra release spray release agent or Johnson's paste wax

Free float the barrel prior to bedding
thanks guys, i hope to not mess it up too bad but if i do then at least i can say i tried
