I note with interest all of the cheap Turk Mausers that have hit our shores, but I have some questions about the cartridge they fire. In Shotgun News, I see lots of ads for 8mm Turk, but I have never heard of such a cartridge. Could this be just an 7.92X57 J or S???
I'm somewhat interested in these rifles, but as a rule I wont buy a rifle I cannot handload for.
Can anyone shed some light on this situation for me?
Any idea which 8x57? J or S (.318 vs .323)

The turk 8mm's I have fired were way over pressure. The bolt sticks, and the velocity of the 196 gr's was over 3000fps.
They have the deepest crimp I have ever seen. Also they are corrosive. To shoot them in a 100 year old rifle is really
foolish.

While I'll agree that the velocity and pressure is high, the bullet is a 150 gr, not a 196, in the turk loads. Honest.

Old military rifles are kind of a "luck of the draw" type thing however I did pick up a "Turk" fairly cheap & built my son his first "big" rifle.
cut the issue barrel to 25" & recrowned. Glass bedded into a wood sporter stock & mounted an old Bushnell "command post" 2.5x8 scope.
Handloaded 200 gr Speer = 2477 fps, Exterme spread 22.2 fps, SD 9.0, AD 6.8. Will put 5 shots @ 100 yds into a 1.5" or smaller group.
Never tried any surplus ammo.
My post was from memory, I'll dig out my notebook and check. Even so the pressure is way up there. As I recall I
removed the crimp by peiniong the neck. Velocity seeemed
about the same , but the bolt opened with a lot less effort.
There are several "Turk" Mausers, at least three barrel threads, and both 93 & 98 actions. They were made all over, and have had their markings buffed off a couple of times
during arsenal "rebuilds". To make any positive statement
about them is foolish. I have one of them, it shoots fine with
milder reloads.
