Hi
I was wondering if any of the smiths on the forum could give me an idea as to how much I should expect the headspace of a new barrel to reduce when I torque it in to the action as opposed to when I run the action on hand tight when its on the lathe?
I was thinking I should torque the barrel up to about 65 ft/lbs
Thanks
Usually .001 for chrome Moly and .002 for stainless steel. YMMV

I give my final chamber depth an additional .003 to allow for the crush.

Excellent.
Thanks very much
We get .0015 max crush at 100 foot pounds. We chamber to zero plus .002 and after torque up get .0005" clearance on the Go. On a pure field gun I like to see .001 to .0015 clearance. If we get too short some dies may not set the shoulder back far enough but with factory ammo there is miles of room.

Thanks again all good info, Do you find that the amount of crush varies with different tenon threads I.E:- does a remmy crush up more/less than perhaps a mauser or tikka?
Thanks
