Hey guys, wanted to know if this could be answered. I have a push feed model 70 winchester action with a messed up barrel. It is a 270 now. I also have a remington 700 take off barrel in 30-06. Can the threads on the 700 barrel be machined off and have the barrel recut to fit the 70 action?

From my reading the 700 is 1 and 1/8 wide and the 70 takes a 1" shank. May be wrong there.

You would be much better off finding a takeoff barrel from a m70. I'm sure someone has one laying around. Maybe redneck.

I believe the thread pitch on a 700 is 1&1/16x16 and the 70 pushfeeds were 1x16. Tenon length is longer on the Winchester too. Turning the diameter down on the Remington barrel may not completely clean up the old threads. I am sure someone has done it though.
Unless you have access to free machine work I can't imagine you would save much money over finding a push-feed 70 barrel.

I've not done one personally, but just going over some of the differences in measurements in my head sez it might (emphasis there) be done..

Tenon on M70 = .735L x 1.0 diam w/16tpi threads
Tenon on M700 - .885L +/- x 1.067 diam w/16 tpi

The bolt head recess on the M700 barrel is .155. Shave that off and you're at .730. Machine down the tenon to 1.0 and thread to 16 tpi. Most likely the lettering won't index but who cares? It's the headspace that you're probably going to have to deal with and it's possible that, by having the luck of it being a bit long, that prudent removal of shank shoulder could bring it into line.. If short, chamber reamer is needed.. One would then have to consider the bolt lockup to the tenon face to be within .005... I'd hate to be further away..


Figure all this - then go find a take-off barrel from a M70 PF and you'll be many bux ahead.. FWIW, I don't have one - all I have is old classic barrels which will very soon find a home in the local scrap yard..

I have had a .416 Remington factory Barrel re-threaded and fitted to a push feed Super Grade .458 action.
Also had the feed ramp base modified to fit a custom opened length magazine box that permitted 95mm OAL for the .416 Remmy cartridge.

The finished rifles shot so well there was a bidding war with people trying to buy it from me. One eventually did.
