The 'smith doesn't have go/no go gauges for the Whelen. Can the 30/06 gauges be used to correctly headspace it? The barrel is a fully chambered and threaded tube for a Remington 700.

I believe the 280 is unique in its case length and headspace gauge. It is 2.199 to the neck/shoulder juncture and the 30-06 is 2.109. I don't think its headspace gauges are interchangeable with any other 06 based case. It was made a touch longer to prevent inadvertent chambering in the 270.
