Satterlee, available in either right or left hand swing
thanks guys!

+1 on Ed LaPour, he just installed one on my Springfield 1922M2. It works great and I am very pleased with it.

Take a look at Dakota's, too. I have had good luck with them. Own a couple Gentrys that work well but one had timing issues which were corrected.

Timing them correctly may be the bigger issue than the brands listed fwiw...
Timing issues with the Gentry and some with Dakota. My LaPours are great. I have 6 of them. I have 2 for Remingtons installed and one waiting that are made by PT&G. They work fine.

Steer clear of the Dakota and Gentry unless you want to risk running into the timing problem. Ed Lapour's is a Cadillac compared to the others, Satterlee's are good too but delivery could be a problem
+100 for Ed Lapour's! Have a couple of them and damn nice!

Slight hijack, but I have seen pictures of at least two VERY expensive David Miller Mauser action rifles that use the two position Wisner (sp?) or something very similar. I have always found that to be curious for such high end rifles.

However, it also seems to me the only real reason for a three position safety on a controlled feed rifle is easy bolt disassembly in the field.
LaPour's website is a little lacking in info, does he install them? Price?

Or does he supply the smith's that install and fit them?

Thanks,

Mike

He will install them. However, the best part of this is he will fit it to your bolt. The millions of Mausers out there constitute a bunch of different manufacturing tolerances. Some parts interchange, some need fitting. Ed makes three different sized threads on his. If you order one, he will ask you to send your bolt in and he will fit the shroud to your bolt; not the whole safety, just shroud to bolt and it ends up a great fit.

If you are wanting a two position one, send me and email, I have several left. [email protected]
Jim's 2 position safeties are great.
Thanks Butch and Jim!

I want to be able to take the bolt down easily will your 2-pos allow that?

The 3-position safeties from Recknagel are tremendous parts too. NECG carries them and they are well worth a look.

They offer RH, LH, and a version with an additional locking lever.
The one that came on the rifle.

Not as easily as with the three position one with the center position. You would need to retract the cocking piece and hold it back with something thin like a dime.

Not as classy with a scope!

thanks Jim

This is a Wisner safety on my Swede. As I understand it, LaPour bought Jim's tooling and such and makes the same safety?

Thanks Ed, Got busy today and didn't get a chance to call him, will try to remedy that tomorrow.

I have a two position Wisner that Jim Kobe put on.
I have a two position Chapman that I put on with Chapman tooling.
I have a number of Dumoulin 3 position that came with an action attached.
What is your opinion of each?

To me Mauser means 3-pos, although both of my current sporters have modern Remington style safeties. One because it came that way and one because it was a cheaper package trigger/safety on a budget build.

The third position means nothing to me.
The Chapman has a lot of sharp edges compared to the Wisner.
The price difference may be $10, which would not pay much per hour for turning a Chapman into a Wisner shape.

I know it's a bit of a necro-thread revival, but ........ smile

Does anyone have any pics of the aforementioned safeties in the "safe" position?

We are having this discussion on another site. I am not happy with the position of the Dakota lever as it's very vulnerable to be moved into the "fire" position by mistake.

That's because when in the middle position it is only for disassembly ot the bolt. Safety position is all the way to the back. Also the reason I don't use Genty's is due to the weak detent, it is not very positive.

Mauser cocking piece getting shortened.

For those amateurs like me.... timing the safety means things must work together so the safety pushes back the firing pin ~0.030". If that does not work when put together, modification may be possible by altering:
1) the cocking piece
2) the trigger
3) the safety

The timing can display 3 states:
1) The safety would have to push the firing pin back too far, so it will not engage.
2) The safety pushes the firing pin back 0.030". With rifle cocked and the safety on, the trigger does nothing. When the safety is taken off, nothing happens until the trigger is pulled.
3) The safety does not push back the firing pin. With rifle cocked and the safety on, the trigger causes a small click. When the safety is taken off, the rifle fires that instant.

I have seen Mausers with the safety swing an arc with the wrong shape, so the only way to change the timing is welding material onto the safety.
