It was either here, or on CGN, someone had successfully rebored or rebarreled a Garand to 9.3X62.

Would appreciate finding that thread again.

This begs the question why. I'm not being cynical, but instead I'm just simply curious.
The ghost of Patton will haunt you in the night!!!
In Canada the 9.3 X 62 is kinda like our 06 Teds got quite a bit of experience with the Cartridge!
kk,

It's not the cartridge. It's a Garand. Changing it from 06 would be like...painting a moustache on the Mona Lisa. shocked

I have never owned a Garand, and certainly not interested in reboring one. I read several months ago, somewhere on the net, about a guy who had rebored one that had a barrel that was toast.

He was about to fine tune the gas handling, and I am interested in how he made out.

There was no comment as to why. Guess they're able to get 8x57 more easily.

Well, that has already been done.

I have bored barrels to 338-06 and 35 Whelen before and the muzzle is getting real thin. I would imagine that a 9.3 by 62 and 8 by 57 would have to start with a new barrel blanks, as the cases are shorter than the 30-06. Those original barrels cannot be set back because of the gas system.

My eyes...my eyes!!

Can't see myself holding that in my hand and resting it on my shoulder...metaphoricly speaking of course.

Now, how to get the image out of my mind.
sarco had barrel and op rod sets that were both shortened to .308 for or by the Italians - bm 59, or at least they claimed. anyone got feedback on these? Mel

Okay, Lothar Walthar makes barrels for the Garand.

And, this is not the forum I originally saw it on, but here you go!

I don't azz around,....replacing the barrel is one's only legitimate option, unless you're unmercicfully prosecuting a quest for hopelessly in accurate third world junk.

Top notch stuff, Lothar Walthar,

Crap's sake just build ACCURATE rifles !

....That's what we're supposed to be doing,...

Frag's SAKE,....they're arguing about how to "break in" a barrel again

....half of those pontificating would be lucky to cut a pipe thread, much less fit up an accurate barrel / reciever stunt.

Let's all NOTE that it would appear that the best quality barrels available , for fitting out these romantically challenged clank wagons are NOT made in the United States.

I can see the need if 06 ammo is hard to get in Canada. I can only imagine that bringing the stuff in as an import would be a giant pain in the southern hemisphere too.

That was my first thought reading this so I just measured the muzzle on my Garand. It's 0.510" so a 0.366" bore will leave you with 072" wall thickness which I understand to be too thin for a rebore. Don't the guys doing the rebores want 0.100" to 0.125" minimum wall thickness?
A 35 Whelen M1 Garand would make a nice bear rifle IMO confused

Years ago, I saw a Garand rebored to 35 Whelen at Paul Rogan's shop here in Whitehorse. It worked!

No reason the '62 would not work, especially since it operates at chamber pressure similar to the 30-06. The gas port would have to be tuned, but that is a relatively simple undertaking.

Saw one in 35 Whelen years ago.
Guy that had it called it his "bear spray".

For the man who has everything: a Garand rebarreled to 458 Winchester!

When building a Garand in other cartridges, you have to remember the port pressure and the pressure curves. The Garand has a L O N G gas piston/op-rod and when you get port pressures and pressure curves wrong, you can easily end up with a bent op rod; and they're a beotchh to straighten out once bent.
