what would you do regarding the "step" where the action drops down to the recoil lug? would you have the barrel start at the same diameter as the lug? any pics would be welcome.
A Holland lug is about the same diameter as the action. Then starting with the barrel the same diameter as the lug would be a clean way to do it.

Here is how it's usually done.

Be sure to post a picture of the finished rifle.
awesome pic there HG..thanks,that was my thinking as I'm also doing a 3p safety and classic mauser style bolt knob for a more safari look.. any more detail on that rifle of yours? pls post pic of the complete action if not too much trouble!
HG, that's nice
Whoa, hold on guys. I didn't build this one. I love traditional rifles but just don't have the time to do them. Currently it seems most everyone I know wants stainless/fiberglass rifles. This one caught my eye and when Porker mentioned octagon barrel on a bolt action this one was done how I would do it so here is the link to it where I found it.

Ok, you didn't build that rifle. Your integrity is worthy of compliment, I am sure your rifles would be also.
Porker, will you be milling the octagon profile, or have any into specs for that operation ?
