Next Question:
I am a bit of an "oil freak", and checked out the current crop of gun oils being sold. I honestly was unimpressed as they felt, looked, and informally tested (glass slide) like 60's motor oils. I have long since moved to full type 4/5 synthetics for all my vehicle, including tractors with excellent results. Much slippier, and of course higher corrosion, anti-fouling, etc.

My question,
Is there a synthetic (non-silicone) oil out there for guns?
Anyone know of a documented study indicating that quality
synthetic, such as Mobil 1 should not be used?

I use a product named EEZOX. It is completely synthetic and I have had great luck with it. The only negative I have found is the odor. Other than that, its fabulous.

What's wrong with Break-Free CLP? I have used it for years with no problems. If it's good enough for an M-16 or an artillery piece, it's good enough for any other kind of gun.

The conditions that oils have to endure in most firearms are pretty tame. Darn near anything from Vaseline to the most modern synthetic will work and you are not going to see much variability in the way the gun performs. All the hype in the gun press about the latest super oil is mostly Madison Avenue eyewash. Lab testing might reveal some improvements in performance, but you will never notice it in the duck blind, IMHO.

FP10? I've used Firepower 10 for several years with excellent results on about everything that moves around here.

Mobil 1 is oil just like any other. People use it quite often, cheap, works good, and doesn't "burn off" as fast as most others in autos. Not that I have tried it... <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" /> Simple Green works pretty well too as a cleaner, or so I hear.....

+1 on the Mobil 1. I was told to use 0W-30 by a gunsmith, and I've had great results. I also heard good things about simple green, haven't tried it yet.

We used to use Simple Green as a bio friendly way to wash airplanes as the base had very strict controls until we found out that it's highly corrosive to aluminum. I still it on other things and when there's a chance it got on contact with Aluminum (like inside the engine compartment of the car) I just rinse well. Just an FYI.

As far as gun lube I'm a break free guy.

I have used Break Free in the past and could find nothing wrong with it. However, I will tell you that the US Army has discontinued use of it. I don't know why. I've heard it had something to do with the latest edition of the M16, but I don't know that to be a certainity.

I am giving some of the newer lubes a try. Just now I am using Militec-1, which is getting considerable use in the Sand Box I understand. You have to clean off previous lubricants, and follow their application instructions (which includes heat).

I've been using Corrosion-X for about ten years now. it really keeps corrosion away and seems to be a very good lube as well. I've used it in Bolt rifles, Semi-auto Ar15's, Pumps, Glock pistol, salt water fishing reels (This is where I find the corrosion resistance to be outstanding. Give it a try.

99', When I was in the Navy, The Gunnersmates used BreakFree CLP on the deck guns. That was enough testimonial for me. For removing caked up preservatives and other accumulations, I use Kroil and then treat with BreakFree.

Simple Green will clean the $(%* out of cosmoline. I bought an old No4 MKI lee enfield washed it with SG, and had no problems

Synthectics are excellent for very cold weather, (-20degrees and lower) I won't use regular oil anymore after having a couple freeze up. I've used EEzox - worked OK but too much smell. Break free is very good, doesn't evaporate. Remington's CLP was excellent, bought 6 bottles when they stopped making it. Still have 2. G-96 makes a good sythetic oil too. The RCMP uses it for their guns.
