Has anyone tried installing a .22LR barrel liner in a worn barrel to get better accuracy out of a .22 conversion kit?

i'd THINK that by the time you buy the liner, and have the work done and chambered etc... that a new rimfire barrel would be a better thing all the way around, could be wrong though.

I think the big reliners are old lever guns etc...you might do a search for that and see... costs and accuracy should be similar.

If you are talking about an AR15 bbl thats shot out, why bother with the expense and hassle of lining it, just get a new one, probably cheaper in the long run. liner is about 40 bucks and the machine time/labor aint gonna be to your liking. If you plan on trying it yourself, tooling will eat your lunch.

Liners work very well when there is not much else to get the gun back in service. Ive lined old lever guns and had great results. I'm getting ready to do a M39 marlin cause the sob's wont sell you a new barrel, no other choice.

.22 rimfires are another biggy in terms of barrel relining although I am not exactly sure why unless it was due to corrosive primed .22 ammo in a bygone era.

Fairly sure it takes an 8mm bit and I seem to recall seeing long 8mm bits for $20 or less so the money would be somewhat less. What would the chamber reamer be for? I was thinking the install would involve drilling the barrel for the liner, prepping the liner to be silver soldered or epoxied in(I think both are acceptable) and butting the liner up to the chamber adapter with at most having to ream the liner to essentially create a forcing cone?

Sorry, I misunderstood. I thought you were dealing with a dedicated rim fire barrel type conversion that had bore issues.

What you describe in the last paragraph of your last post is not feasable, nor effective. Do you have the kit you describe? look at the chamber insert, theres a 2" -.225+ dia smoothbore jump from RF chamber to the lead in the .224 bore. Its no wonder they foul the bores the way they do, accuracy is not all that good just because of the mismatch of .222 bullet to the .224 dia bbl size. No telling what the dimensions are after the ride thru the adaptor bore. I have seen the Aguila SSS shoot fair, but its bullet weight and diameter are close to the bore/twist spec requirements of the AR/M16.

Lets say you found some smith to do what you propose, and he successfully meets your specs. I wont even go into the set up and precision measurements needed to butt the parts up sqare. You now have a AR barrel with a soft steel .222 rifled bore soft soldered or epoxyed in a weapon that will most likely still chamber the .556 cartridge that uses a .224 jacketed bullet. A recipe for disaster if Ive ever heard of one.
So if anyone has done it, they are keeping it quiet, look for the three fingered smith with an eye patch.

If you have a source for a long piloted drill bit for $20, I am definately interested. I have to grind my own and its precision work, $20? yeah baby.

And why would I be shooting 5.56 ammo out of a barrel I went to the trouble of putting a .22LR liner in?

No, I didn't say I had found a long piloted drill for $20. I did say I had found extended length 8mm drills (IRC the OD of the liner) for less than $20.

Also, I have measured several .22LR bullets and found their maximum diameter is .225" while a 5.56 was .224" which got me wondering why the wildly differing diameters listed for .22LR projectiles?

22lr shoots lead bullets.. there is a difference.. nuff said.

I understand that, but I don't understand why I have seen the .22LR projectile diameter listed as .222", .223", and .224" and not in terms of one brand versus another, but just as specifications.
