What type of scope would you put on this rifle?

Its going to be a Hog rifle and my shots are 100 yards max.

I need something better than the original iron sights...

Could you recommend a scope I should look into, brand & model?

Williams or Lyman peep is what you need.
Scopes are SACRILEGE on this type of rig.

yea, sacrilege, but missing a deer for lack of it is WORSE!

Why would you miss with a peep sight?

my eyes ain't what they used to be.

dark woods and dark deer and a peep, don't work for me.

Your eyes must really be bad if you need a 3-9x40 on a 44mag.....way too much scope for said gun IMO......

I too like these rifles without scopes. In fact, it kills me to scope them. However, I also have to admit that I shoot them much better with a scope. At this stage of my shooting life, I can stay on an 8 inch 100 yd target with open sights, but I can shoot 1 1/2 inch or smaller groups at that distance with a 4x scope. The "dark deer in dark places" thing resonates with me also.

I like the 1-4 (or so) variables. I have them on two rifles. But truthfully, I rarely use the lower powers. A fixed 4x, maybe an ultralight variety, would be very useful for hunting as long as you don't have too many "in your face opportunities." I like Leupold scopes a lot. Most of the scopes I've bought have been Leupold. They have never failed me in 30 years of shooting. Other makes have failed me occasionally. But, some of the low-priced scopes I've bought have lasted longer and worked better than you'd think. Others have had good experiences with other makes as well.

One more thing-- get good quality scope mounts.

When I first purchased these two rifles for my son & myself I didn't want to scope them as I didn't want to lose the beautiful lines & looks of a Lever rifle.

However, that quickly changed when I actually tried to shoot it with iron-sights...

NO CAN SEE TOO GOOD, if you know what I mean...

I realized all too quickly that I purchased these rifles to hunt in sometimes dense cover, yet I needed to HIT what I was AIMING at with Great Accuracy...

Your posts have helped me DETERMINE what is priority for me...

I'm planning on a XS Scout mounted 2-7x32mm scope.

I should be able to be good in up-close stuff and out to a 100 yards with great accuracy...

I would go the best fixed 4x you can buy. I would not scout scope mount. For me it is easier to find target when mounted standard over action. The bigger front lens will work better in low light. Leupold would be my first pick.

IMHO, given that My eyes are 65 yrs. old, I use a 3-9x40 Zeiss. If it's there in range I see it.

I have one of these for my Marlin 1894C .357 and I find it ideal.

Anything more than the 2.5X20 Leupold is overkill IMHO.

My eyes are pretty much shot as well. I have to use a scope, or I don't hunt. A benefit of using a low power variable, is you can extend your ability to see into dark woods by at least a half hour or more.
On my Marlin 1894S, I use a Weaver V4.5, a 20mm tube scope.
