I was just in a local gun shop and found a Marlin 336 .30-30 prior to the trigger/bolt safety (about 1980). No checkering. It has a scope base and seems to be in good condition. Few scratches in the stock, very superficial cosmetically. Action seemed smooth.

I'm by no means an expert on gun conditions. The shop is asking $250.00 and said it could come down since its a consignment gun. Seemed to really want to sell it.

1. Is $250 a reasonable price?
2. Other than looking at the surface how should one go about evaluating a use gun. (So I can try and sound like I now what I'm talking about)

Any help would be welcomed

In 98% they are worth in the 200-275 range. Have seen some very nice ones go in the 175-200 range here locally. FWIW

$250 is the going rate around here. The local shop here has a dozen Marlins pre-safety and otherwise for about the same price. I certainly wouldn't pay much more unless it was really nice.
FWIW - I picked one up last year that was barely ever used and pre safety for $225. So basically I concur with the others on price range.
