i was over at a friends ranch today and we got to talking guns and hunting, and he popped open his gun safe and started showing me shotguns, rifles and pistols, he has collected over the last 70 yrs,he has some wonderful coustom guns, we finally got to the back of the safe and he pulled a 1957 336 marlin 30-30 out that he said he had never fired. well we got to talkin trade,and that 30-30 followed me home, my question is have you seen or do you know about a 336 that has a beautiful brass compass in laid in the butt stock on the right side , ive never seen this before on a lever gun.its about the size of a silver dollar, he said it was that way when he got it many years ago. rio7

M336 Marlins, especially old'uns, are dreadful, near-useless contraptions and hardly worth keeping around. If you'd like, I can send you a postage-paid shippin' carton and you can send that awful thing on in here to PA?

I already have some, but am possessed of a generous soul. They make dandy door stops and the like.

Better keep 'er? Might come in handy some day, if the wind ever settles and you need it to drop something out on the lawn? ;O)

Tried using a Glock once for a doorstop, but it was too light. Had to nail it down.

Was there a question in there some were or just all brag? I suspect that compass was a custom job done by an old hunter.

from what i've been able to find out the compass was an option available back then. I'm in McAllen and the winds were crazy this past weekend. Went out to the refuge down here and man it was 40+ winds at times.

javman, thanks for the info, this 336 shoots about 2 feet high at a 100 yrds, think i will mount a 1.5X 5 lupie on it,wind was blowing really hard here for a couple of days, turned my horses tail to the wind and it blew the bit out of his mouth, our ranch is about 70 miles n.w. of mc allen. rio7

You were at the right place at the right time. Keep the gun in original condition. Some gunsmiths used to drill the front barrel band to attach a detachable swivel stud. Don't do it. And never ever put a recoil pad on it. If you can't handle the bone crushing, nerve shattering, teeth loosening, concussion causing recoil of the .30-30, I'll make you an offer on it.

I used a 1976 Model 336 in .30-30 for my deer hunting this year. Surprise of surprises, plain old Remington CL Hollow Points in the 170 Grain variety, laid three deer low for me. (Actually two for me, and one for my son.)I'm ashamed to admit that it was the first year I have hunted with a .30-30, but it was very effective with no muss or fuss. I'll be carrying one more often from now own.
